Democrat run Detroit becomes largest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy

Freducation~This is all Reagan and Bush''s fault. If they'd just done a better job running the country instead of union busting and outsourcing American jobs this wouldn't have happened. Now that I've got that out of my system let's take a look at what really happened.
After WWII people moved to suburbs, Detroit didn't respond
Japanese autos came to the U.S., Detroit didn't respond
Public sector employee costs rose, Detroit didn't respond
Privatization cried out in the wilderness, Detroit didn't respond
Crime rose chasing more people out, Detroit didn't respond

Anyone else care to chime in?

In October of 2012, President Barack Obama triumphantly declared he “refused to throw in the town” and “let Detroit go bankrupt.”

On July 18, 2013, Detroit went bankrupt.

“We refused to throw in the towel and do nothing. We refused to let Detroit go bankrupt. We bet on American workers and American ingenuity, and three years later, that bet is paying off in a big way,” Obama said in his weekly address.

Don't forget, he's willing to push added resources on a civil rights investigation on a man who was already found not guilty of murder by a jury of his peers. Those charges came at the behest of the administration as well.

We don’t have a spending problem, we have a military spending problem

Its obvious MIKEYA has too much time on his hands. We see his thousands of hours spent surfing the web while supposedly working as a USMC protecting America. Would it not be better to have MIKEYA working on infrastructure in Detroit than wasting our tax dollars surfing the web?

Statements made are the opinion of the writer who is exercising his first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and are generally permitted.

No, we have a spending problem:

2012 budget breakdown for factors 6% or more:

21% Medicare/Medicaid
20% Social Security
20% Military and security
13% Safety net programs
7% federal benefits for vets/retirees
6% interest on debt

Of the top 6 spending sectors, 4 are either welfare or welfare-related. Transfer payments. Entitlements.

The military is a huge waste; it's undeniable. But so are all the other factors.

I have way too much time on my hand? Yesterday I began work at 0600 and ended at 2030. Now if I were a union employee I'd be running to a steward talking about how things are unfair. However I have a mission to accomplish and I get shit done.

There's one the military doesn't want and that's handouts, we will earn everything we make. Union employees however want nothing but handouts.

Don't forget,

This year the Obama administration is recommending a 1% pay increase for military personnel.

What type of pay raises do the unions strike over? Approved walk out denying a 4% pay increase. Offered a 2% pay increase-union went on strike.

How about when there's no money on the line and it's on a contract somewhere else?

Now, with that in mind. Aren't you glad that the servicemembers of this fine country don't stop doing their job when they get a small pay raise or as happened in 1962 none at all.
God bless America and God bless the men and women in uniform!

The vacant and decrepit commercial structures all have a negative value and there are so many of them. There is no way the city or the owners can afford to tear them all down.

I think the vacant residential properties are the saddest. Huge homes are shown in the video and in the past these structures were jewels, built and maintained by proud owners. Now they are not worth their weight in shit.

How sad to see the city crumble. No chance it can come back.

By the way, Willard, you have driven me from this site. I was on vacation last week and only after I hit this site and saw your continued attacks on Fred and anything non-union did I realize how refreshing it was not to have that in my life. I'm moving on.

Best regards all others.

Goodbye Jim. Good luck. We're all going to need that.

So-called "Willard" is an alter ego of one of the other posters here, who posts as a "sort-of-kind-of conservative. In other words, it's a fake ID, as opposed to a real poster who posts under only one "handle". The (let's call him) original poster has at least 10 other identities. There is information all over the internet as to how these hacker nut cases do this. Don't be tricked.

Thats what happens when you are anti- business, union and spend beyond your means.

Detroit was running up $1 billion in new debt about every 3 years.

That means they were counting on White Michigan and even the nation to bail them out. They were never going to stop the bleeding, no matter what that asshole Bing claims.

I've gotta admit, I'm enjoying watching Bing whine like a little bitch on TV. As soon as Snyder finally got off his fat ass and acted, Bing became irrelevant, and Bing knows it.

Detroit has indeed become the largest ghetto in North America. Because Whites were too scared to deal with the real problem, they just let it languish until this $18 billion travesty resulted.

I've spoken to some people who believe the federal government will just step right in and bail Detroit out. That will send the improper message to other cities and even entire states, that the feds are too scared of the consequences of letting basnkruptcies resolve themselves. Wait and see. This is how an empire just dies.

Many ignorant people will blame military spending or other Federal spending for what happened in Detroit. That just isn't the case. In fact a recent Detroit Free Press article bemoaned military spending cuts because of the effect they would have on Detroit and Michigan as a whole. Mrignorant won't let facts get in the way though.
Detroit never recognized that the moment Northland Shopping Center opened and Hudson's put a store there that it's days were numbered unless it responded. It responded by continuing to elect Dems who gave away huge contracts and bennies to the public sector employees who are only now giving back. They continued to own and operate an aging water and lighting system rather than privatize. They continued to throw money at the bus system, and the People Mover, invest in arenas for the use of privately owned sports teams etc etc. Simply, they just never learned from their own mistakes. And still haven't - the new light rail system to travel Woodward Avenue is just one more stupid idea that Detroiters will pay for.

Your comments about the Dems, in general, might be correct. But I grew up in that area. Northland was nice (in the years before malls), but Downtown Detroit was VERY popular with suburbanites. You could get there by bus, even as a high schooler. I continued to shop Downtown Detroit and Hudsons, B. Siegels, Crowleys, etc. for years after I had to move to this area.

Most Toledoans have no idea what a wonderful store J. L. Hudson's was, before it was sold to a chain. The store at Franklin Park, called "Hudson's" was a name-only store owned by the chain. It was not the REAL Hudson's. J.L. Hudsons, while still owned by the family [which was probably primarily owned by the Ford family by the late 1960's... Edsel Ford married J. L. Hudson's niece) - THAT J.L. Hudson's was fabulous. When I went to Marshall Field's in Chicago, it was a big letdown - I had seen Hudsons - there was no comparison.

No - Northland was not to blame for Detroit's demise. My friends & I shopped & lunched there occasionally - but Downtown Detroit was the preferred weekend shopping destination. There was Victor Lims (best Chinese restaurant in the midwest), tons of stores & eateries in all price ranges. No, Detroit's real demise began with Coleman Young. He was an idiot and a crook. He just about destroyed that city in very short order. It just took a while for the bankruptcy to happen. I often wondered if the real J.L. Hudson's would have sold out and moved out of downtown, had Young not been elected. The chain closed the downtown store in very short order after they bought the Hudson's name.

If they wiped out ALL of Detroit's debt, it would be back in the same situation in a matter of years.
Detroit is a perfect example of what happens when there are more "takers" than there are "makers". You eventually run out of the "makers" money, especially when they wise up and move away.
The same thing will happen with the whole country eventually if shit doesn't change, it'll just take a bit longer.

"We're all riding on the Hindenburg, no sense fighting over the window seats"-Richard Jenni

Perfect example of democratz running a city into the ground. It's going to happen here, too.
