The G(reedy) O(ld) P(arty) Is At It Again

The following story is in today's Blade: House Republicans may set aside a bill calling for the biggest reduction in food stamps for the POOR since 1996, averting a fight over cuts that critics assail as immoral during hard times, House leaders said Thursday.

Food stamps would face the largest cut, $16 billion over 10 years, in the House farm bill-$2 billion more than for farm subsidies and nearly half of all the savings in the bill. The cuts are estimated to reduce enrollment by 5 percent.

My thoughts on this bill:

1. The House, controlled by Republicans, is delaying action on this bill in an election year to avoid hurting Romney.

2. Food stamps would be the hardest hit in the farm bill. Subsidies to large, wealthy, corporate farmers would be largely untouched. In other words the ones most likely to be big donors to the GOP.

3. It states that enrollment would be cut by approximately 5 percent. So does that mean that 5 percent of hunger will disappear? If so, then how? By starving 5 percent of the recipients to death?

They state that cutting food stamps would be "immoral" during hard times. Isn't it immoral to keep cutting programs for the poor to benefit the richest Americans? Besides Americans how many of the large farms are controlled by foreign interests? It would benefit wealthy Americans and foreigners alike.

Why place all of the cuts on the poorest and most vulnerable Americans? The ones who are least likely to vote for the G(reedy) O(ld) P(arty). It is time for America to wake up and see what the policies of this rich, greedy elite called the Republican Party is doing to this country.

Or, $37.1 BILLION.

Which one would you chose ?

A greed and avarice question to a lowly private with all the economic sense of a 4 year old girl !

they SET ASIDE the bill, and you're pissed off about that Harley?

Guess if you're a whiner ya gotta have SOMEthing to whine about...

We can't keep this food-stamp farce going forever. By the time I started hearing advertising on the radio for applying for FS, I knew it was going too far.

FS aren't free money, Sarge. No government spending is free money. And the government isn't your grocer or parent.

The federal government borrows 40 cents of each dollar it spends now. It's doing so for the 4th year running, after decades of borrowing hugely in the first place. Sarge, that's catastrophic. It has to end.

I always get a chuckle when the people who are supplying the money to pay for someone else's responsibilities (i.e. food) are called "greedy." How about the people who are expecting you and me to pay for their (and the children they couldn't afford to have in the first place) food, health care, housing, transporation, etc.

We need to change the terminology and the paradigm. Any effort to cut back on food stamps or any other entitlement program is not "greed"--it's a matter of the gift-givers wanting the gift recipients to be self-supportive for themselves and the children they bring into the world. We believe they have the wherewithall to be successful. It's equality.

Im guessing this is the utopia that Sarge'd like to see here in Ohio.
Do they have trailer parks in Mass?

Did the policies enacted during his tenure as Governor lead to this state of affairs? Also, Billy, is the article you posted by another rightwing, nut case publication? It is easy to claim this state of affairs exists but do they really? It is difficult for me to believe that any state would allow food stamps to be used to purchase anything other than food. Did the liquor store with the sign out front stating they accepted food stamps really permit the purchase of liquor inside or the purchase of food that was sold within? It is easy to post misleading photos such as this. I was always told to believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear. In other words I do not believe any of the B.S. being spouted by rightwing talk show hosts and half of what I see of the lies they are trying to perpetrate on the American public. As I said before if this state of affairs exists did Willard Romney's failed policies as Governor of Massachusetts lead to them?

So you think Obama is doing a great job for the entire country?

Logic would deduce that we KNOW Obama can't successfully run the country--we have 3 1/2 years of proof.

Romney COULD have a chance of being successful at running the country.

Galt, just for your own situational awareness on Sarge in case you weren't aware.

He supports a woman for Toledo mayor who states that God will smite the city because it didn't elect her. This is who he publicly supports. My hope is like Jesse Ventura he decides to leave after he loses enough elections.

Do your homework you moron. People site the facts and rather than do the research yourself you just say you dont believe it. Grow up or just stay at the trailer park and collect your gub'ment cheese and STFU, genius.

So that goes for the Liberal party as well right? ( "I was always told to believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear. In other words I do not believe any of the B.S. being spouted by rightwing talk show hosts and half of what I see of the lies they are trying to perpetrate on the American public")

Oh don't leave out Obama's failed policies then and those about to come..

Did you notice the difference between a food stamp card and an EBT card or are you too dumb? Read your article again: After her stand, things at Big Apple went downhill quickly for Jackie Whiton. Her manager called the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services and was told that cigarettes — and beer — can be purchased with a cash (as opposed to a food) EBT card.

What the guy tried to use was a CASH card and not a food stamp card. They are two totally different things. Why should people's FOOD STAMP cards be cut or eliminated because of abuse by people using EBT cards? Actually the person was not legally abusing his CASH (EBT) card because by law he could buy cigarettes with it. While I can understand the cashier was upset over his using the card that way the fact remains she was violating company policy by not accepting his card.

Hunger is real and it can not be eliminated by any legislative act. Unless of course laws are passed eliminating aid for hungry people and they all starve to death. That would eliminate the hunger problem, Wouldn't it?

Sarge you have delusions of adequacy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_Benefit_Transfer

The EBT card is SNAP's benefit card. Yes it can be used for cash as well but that too is for general assistance. So please show how effectively the government purchasing cigarettes qualifies as assistance.

"Hunger is real and it can not be eliminated by any legislative act. Unless of course laws are passed eliminating aid for hungry people and they all starve to death. That would eliminate the hunger problem, Wouldn't it?" Do cigarettes satisfy hunger? If so this paragraph is meaningless in context of the argument.

You really just dont get it do you.

Sad.

The young man was trying to use a SNAP cash card and NOT a food card. There is a difference. As far as Ms. Whitton goes she violated the man's rights. His next step will obviously be to sue her for embarrasing him. He may have been using the card for what was against her views but not against the law. Once again, Mikey Boy, in case you could not perceive the difference, he used a cash card and not a food card. The card he used was CASH.

A SNAP card.

Do you even know what SNAP means?

Supplemental NUTRITION Assistance Program.

Nutrition = FOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

MikeyA

Goofy Old Pricks. The article Billy posted did not mention SNAP cards. It mentioned EBT cards: In a veto by Governor Patrick on July 12 for a bipartisan bill that would have helped reform food stamp and EBT fraud within the state of Massachusetts, citizens of the commonwealth will continue to be allowed benefits which can be used to purchase porn, tattoos, and other non food items.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick, a Democrat whose candidacy has often served as a template from which President Barack Obama has taken his cue, vetoed a bill to reform what you could buy with the Cards EBT State and food stamps. The bill Patrick vetoed would have banned EBT cards to be used for "tattoos, weapons, pornography, body piercings, jewelry, fines and bonds," - Your Jewish News.com

The card mentioned here was an E(lectronic} B(enefits) T(ransfer). The state uses EBT cards for two things: cash or food. That is two totally differnet types of cards. Like I said when you abolish food stamps for a certain percentage of people that means you have chosen that percentage to starve to death. Kind of like the Holocaust.

I'm starting to think Sarge stands for Sargent Slaughter, the wrestler, because that's about how long his attention span will last.

Again I will refer to the wikipedia post on the explaination of EBT and who issues the EBT cards. If this is a different EBT card than I posted an explaination of it is on you to prove it but the article Billy and you both reference does not show that.

"Like I said when you abolish food stamps for a certain percentage of people that means you have chosen that percentage to starve to death. Kind of like the Holocaust." It is comments like this that truly show your ignorance. By using your logic I can argue that before the food stamp program was created then a large portion of the American public starved to death in numbers tantamount to the holocaust. Of course though the reality is this is false and your "logic" flawed.

MikeyA

And yet during the Great Depression they had bread lines and soup kitchens, many of which subsidized by the government. So even then we had a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, just in a different form. So you've now proven on two different fronts that government provided food or food coupons do not prevent starvation.

Thank you for proving my point for me.

MikeyA

With reality. Herbert Hoover did not favor any direct government help to the starving masses. Mikey, you had better study your history a little more deeply than just letting Rush Limbaugh do it for you. You have not proven me wrong on anything, you've proven how ignorant you are. Ignorant of historical facts and ignorant in general. Churches and private charities were supplying the so-called soup of those soup kitchens. They finally got overwhelmed by the need. Thankfully FDR defeated Hoover and got the government active in supplying relief to the starving masses.

7 million city dwellers and 5 million rural= 12 million. How many were lost in the Holocaust? About 6 million. Twice as many starved during the Great Depression(that started because of failed Republican economic policies). Why do you think food assistance programs were put in place? To prevent 12 million from ever starving to death again.

Called "The Path To Power". It covers LBJ's life up until 1941. It describes Johnson's work in the REA (Rural Electrification Administration. The REA worked to bring electricity to all of the U.S. It also describes how death wagons made their rounds every morning to pick up the bodies of people who had starved to death. They would be left along the side of the road like a dead dog for the local authorities to send out a wagon to pick them up and be taken to a mass grave for burial. Americans have never starved before there was a food stamp program? Bullshit!

the population of America during the 1930s was only 123,188,000 in 48 states. That means that if 7 million people starved to death during that decade then over 8% of the population died due to starvation.

that's not the case.
