WGTE Townhall: American Graduate

WGTE will present a live Town Hall program "American Graduate - Finding Solutions for Toledo's Kids" on Thursday, November 17th at 8:00 p.m. Hosted by Bill Harris, the Town Hall will discuss ways to improve student education in our region. The United Way and Toledo Public Schools will be on hand to introduce a variety of innovative ideas that are being implemented right here in the Toledo area.

WGTE in conjunction with Toledo Public Schools and the United Way of Greater Toledo are providing leadership to a network of community partners to build awareness of the dropout crisis in our area.  American Graduate is a public media initiative funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to help local communities across America find solutions to address the dropout crisis. The initiative builds on public media's long-standing commitment to education by convening conversations and strengthening partnerships between public radio and television stations and local schools, businesses and community organizations to help students stay on the path to a high school diploma.

If you would like you join the studio audience, please call 419-380-4613.

You may also join the discussion during the event as WGTE will also be streaming the Town Hall on http://www.wgte.org and http://www.knowledgestream.org

I can't imagine why the Toledo Public Schools would be attending that event. They are part of the problem. Students drop out in part because the TPS is not educating. It's actually a "day prison" for poor children. Those children with families with money and/or motivation, enroll in other school systems.

A real solution would be dissolving the TPS and replacing it by private industry, which really can't do any worse, but will be significantly cheaper on the taxpayer if so. And in the case if it required money to achieve high goals... well, I can see from numerous anecdotes that Toledoans wouldn't mind paying for an expensive school system if their children emerged from it actually educated instead of bored and disillusioned about education in the first place. The TPS expects Toledoans to deliver the former while accepting the latter. A catastrophe is brewing.
