Toledo City Council Wisdom

According to Council President Wilma Brown- " I have a comment to tell you why I'm going to vote no on this. It's because the kids in the central city that would be going to Smith pool won't be able to go to some of the others because they are not welcome. We got quite a few complaints about our kids going to another pool. So if you can't find money for Smith pool I will be voting no."
So many questions. How are people at other pools able to identify kids from the central city? How are they made to feel unwelcome? How many complaints, and from whom? Have these complaints been reported to the Board of Community Relations? Their job, according to they city website, is to address discriminatory practices that interfere with civil rights, and strain racial and cultural relationships. When Wilma refers to "our" kids which kids does she mean.
Intelligent replies only, sorry Paul.

she is probably referring to black children who are not welcome in some of the pools in other neighborhoods. Such as Pickford, which is located in a predominately white identified neighborhood. If a black child shows up to swim there, they are not treated very nicely. I have been at pools where all of the white people got out of the pool when we got in. You Fred, might not want to believe that this happens in the 21th century, but it does. Good for Wilma Brown! I'm shocked that she would take that position. She has always been one who goes along to get along.

It has nothing to do with race...the complaints where about behavior...

And yes...the behavior of many inner city teens and youngster is atrocious..but that is the job of the adult staffers to address...so they should address it...

I part ways with Fred in saying that we should in fact support our community pools....

I used them quite a bit as a kid here and I see no reason we cant afford a few bucks to cool kids off in the summer...

With all the millions we are hemoriging...a couple hundred thou for pools isnt gonna break us...we're already broke..

IMHO...the pools should be the last thing to be closed...right behind the mayors office...

If we got money to plant flowers and change signs...we have money for pools.

"black children who are not welcome in some of the pools in other neighborhoods. Such as Pickford, which is located in a predominately white identified neighborhood. If a black child shows up to swim there, they are not treated very nicely" There must have been some major changes in the Heatherdowns/S. Detroit area. A friend of mine lives that way (less than half a mile) and about half of the other residents on his block are black.

It makes me wonder what's suddenly going on in S. Toledo that all the black people moved out and are no longer allowed to be a part of the community. Did it suddenly become Georgia in 1958. Does it say "Whites Only" on the pool sign?

Or I could just not that purnhrt is a racist and this isn't the first time she's claimed racism without proof, devoid of the facts, to incite people on here.

If she was referring to black children why didn't she say that? Or is that your interpretation? I'm sure there must be some poor white children who swim at Smith pool, would they be considered "our" kids?

Any statement I make is the opinion of me exercising my first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and is generally permitted.

color not behavior! The only behavior we exhibited was getting in the pool. We got in the white folks got out. Fred, where is Smith Pool? I know you two don't like to think that racism exists in Toledo, Ohio but it does. I'm just really surprised Wilma Brown would almost say it......

Bullshit...

"The only behavior we exhibited was getting in the pool. We got in the white folks got out."

More bullshit.

"Fred, where is Smith Pool?"

What difference does that make?

Oh...it must be racism somehow that the black mayor didnt open a "black pool"....

Meh...

"I know you two don't like to think that racism exists in Toledo, Ohio but it does."

Only a fool would make such a claim.....there is plenty of racism to go around town....and some of it comes from you....

" I'm just really surprised Wilma Brown would almost say it......"

Yeah yeah....and water is wet..... pool water too...the shock would if a black toledo City council member DIDNT bring race up during every dicussion....

THAT woud be news....

The ironic thing here...is that I think that ALL the pools that can be put into operation without total rebuilds should be open this summer...regardless of the location or neighborhood demographic....

If the city can fund flower planting, sign up dating and GOLF COURSES....then the city can find some money for the damn pools...

The PROBLEM HERE is that you idiots turn a fiscal and civic issue into a racial issue by crying wolf all the damn time.....and as soon as people hear your crap....they simply blow you off as a perpetual victim...

When you excuse bad behavior by telling us that we just dont understand "black kids" you are as racist as David Duke....except you happen to be black...

Did it ever occur to you to set out to document this so called wide spread racism?

Organize a bus trip to a pool....take plenty of adult supervision and a video camera...and prove to everyone that it's a racial issue by exhibiting good civic bahavior and still getting kicked out....

Show us all the white people jumping out of the pool....

Nah....much easier to scream racist....

I'm reminded of the westfield mall incidents and how flash mobs of black teens starting fights was somehow the fault of the racist mall owners and the cops....

Or how the arrest of a black teen by two black cops was RACIST...

And of course let me take a small bit of amusement in pointing out.....

It wasnt the evil right wing neo-con tea party racists that shut yo' pool.....it was the liberal democrat controlled city council.....

The words, "Toledo City Council" and "wisdom", NEVER belong in the same sentence.

Has anyone been in the neighborhood around Wilson Park? That's the central city.

Sounds like the plantation owner wanna bee's and the runaways are at it again

Did find some humor in this thread. Reminded me of the pool scene from the movie "Caddy Shack."

So, from councilwoman Brown's comments, we can gather that she only works for her Black constituents.

divided into Wards. Isn't her Ward comprised of majority (if not all) black families. Check the demographics......

So, you're saying that she has zero constituents who are white?

According to the City of Toledo website;

District 1 is considered Toledos largest, most diverse Council District and spans from the Willys Parkway area, across portions of the central city, to areas north of Airport Hwy and east of Reynolds Road.

So, it seems like either one of two things must be true. A. there are NO non Black people living in that area. Or, B. There are, but she doesn't serve them, in which case, one would have to wonder who the racist is.

"We're all riding on the Hindenburg, no sense fighting over the window seats"-Richard Jenni

that is what I was saying. But after I posted, I went to the city council website and realized just exactly who her constituents are. She has a vast and diverse constituency. I MADE A HUGE MISTAKE! As far as who she serves, the black community does not feel that she serves them well. Racist or not?

Personally, I don't think any of our council members serve their constituents very well.
It seems like once someone gets elected, they quickly forget who they work for.

WTF-why not swim in Maumee Bay, or Lake Erie, they're both real close. I did when I was in school.

"A person who baits with race, intent on catching a fool, will only find themself at the end of the hook."

When you look at the people who comprise Toledo's city council, its no wonder that this town is as screwed up as it is. Top this off with a mayor who might set a record for most pensions collected on the taxpayers dime and you have a big bowl of shit.

Liberal democrats run barter town....
