Food and Gas Prices up last month - no Cost of Living for Seniors

Our Honorable Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur needs to help the seniors get their COLA next year. She sits next to the gavel, at least for now and should have the influence, being the longest term woman in congress to get this travesty resolved. But will she?

no COLA for 2 years now because there is no inflation they say.

Even though the actual cost of living has a gallon of milk at nearly $4.00, and we have to buy bulk cereal instead of General Mills - which btw packed up and left Toledo Marcy - for our breakfast.

Four bucks? Krogers has a gallon of milk for about $2.70. Where do you get your milk from?

I have to purchase milk at the convenience store. I also pay 2x's as much for 1/2 & 1/2 I put in the only luxury item I get, coffee. Yes it's more expensive than the grocery.
Thanks for asking.

Well, then that means your statement of the "actual cost of living" is more in the category of a lie, isn't it? Stop lying on this forum or we'll thoroughly trounce you on it.

And getting to a grocery is no big deal, car or no car. Even people without cars can walk with a wheeled basket, or ask a friend with a car to car-pool. I'm sure the latter happens a lot.

You're merely choosing to pay too much for food items. That's not inflation. That's just stupidity. And stupidity is very costly, by definition.

Do you try to live on Social Security?

The nearest grocery store to me does happen to be a Kroger store, 3 miles away.

Are you suggesting I get my cart and walk 6 miles for a gallon of milk? Do you have any idea how difficult those handy carts are to pull/push?

I am choosing? Look you elitest asshat, you have NO facts on my life or thousands of others here in Toledo who are trying to make the best of what little they have.

The cost of living for me is not a lie, it's a grim reality.

Trounce away jerk. You scare me, :shaking:

We're up to our elbows in cars. You cannot sanely claim that people have to choose $4.00 milk from the consumer-raping convenience stores. The "convenience stores" are called that for a reason: They are convenient. That means they are a luxury. You should be making arrangements to visit the grocery.

You tried to LIE that inflation is so large for seniors. It just isn't.

Also, Social Security was never meant to provide for your entire lifestyle when you became too old to work. It was always designed as a supplement. The stats suggest that about 40% of the Boomers have made no other arrangements for retirement than SS. That means 40% of the Boomers are dog-stupid. Stupid people deserve to suffer. It's the only way to get through their thick skulls about what's the right thing to do, and what's the wrong thing.

I must state again that it's very likely that you know somebody with a car who can car pool for a grocery trip. So what are you going to lie about now? That you don't have a fridge? Go and pull this ACT on some other site; the facts are simply tearing you apart here, and you look like the most god-damned of fools.

And, as a closing comment, inflation is dead. The consumers are strapped, being loaded down with far too much debt. The producers cannot keep just increasing prices, since people are stopping their buying, which will strand the producers with excess inventory. So they must either drop prices or go out of business. Auctioned inventory is another way prices drop. So prices must be less in the future. The SS COLA must drop to zero. I fully support that. After all, as we workers become poorer, we cannot continue to puff up government worker salaries and retiree payments with COLAs.

COLA is directly proportional to the rate of inflation.

What is a COLA?
Legislation enacted in 1973 provides for cost-of-living adjustments, or COLAs. With COLAs, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits keep pace with inflation.

No COLA
There will be no increase in Social Security benefits payable in January 2011, nor will there be an increase in SSI payments.

How is a COLA calculated?
The Social Security Act specifies a formula for determining each COLA. According to the formula, COLAs are based on increases in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). CPI-Ws are calculated on a monthly basis by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A COLA effective for December of the current year is equal to the percentage increase (if any) in the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year over the average for the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA became effective. If there is an increase, it must be rounded to the nearest tenth of one percent. If there is no increase, or if the rounded increase is zero, there is no COLA.

COLA Computation
The last year in which a COLA became effective was 2008. Therefore the law requires that we use the average CPI-W for the third quarter of 2008 as the base from which we measure the increase (if any) in the average CPI-W. The base average is 215.495, as shown in the table below.

Also shown in the table below, the average CPI-W for the third quarter of 2010 is 214.136. Because there is no increase in the CPI-W from the third quarter of 2008 through the third quarter of 2010, there is no COLA for December 2010.

It appears your lack of reading comprehension skills has you throwing attacks at me.
I would ask for an apology but since you are an asshat, nevermind.

Since there's no inflation, and in fact prices will be deflating, then it only makes sense that the COLA is zero.

Remember, you're the moron who CHOOSES to pay 48% more for milk just because you're too damned lazy to arrange a proper trip to the grocery store.

There's always the bus. Even with a TARTA fare or pass, you'd still come out ahead by paying regular grocery price vs. inflated convenience store prices for milk and other items!

I'm just glad I have Daisy the cow in my back yard, who in exchange for munching on turf, charges nothing for milk.

Patience is a great virtue.

Milk is not four bucks a gallon here in Toledo, maybe in New York City. But Marcy should do something to make sure seniors get their COLA money. She's got the clout, so says one of America's newspapers that is endorsing her for reelection.

Well it looks like you're in luck. While the COLA for SS was established by a formula created in the 70's, it looks like congress again will provide seniors with a $250 payout to help offset it.

Again - Typical conservatives. Demanding teachers, firemen and policemen take a pay cut while throwing a temper tantrum that they aren't getting more money from the government.

Looks like the Democrats are going to come through for you - you're welcome.

Again, another liberal misrepresenting where money comes from. Remember that "government money" in the case of S.S. originally came from those seniors in the first place.

"We're all riding on the Hindenburg, no sense fighting over the window seats"-Richard Jenni

No, that's probably false. The Congress kept raising the SS taxes for the last 30 years. So seniors were UNDERPAYING -- they paid less taxes in their early years. Later generations are cashing up the former. That's how SS always functioned.

The sad fact is that the worker in her 20s today would need to live about 60 years after retiring in order to get her money back. The Boomers only had to live 20-30 years after retiring to do that.

SS is not a retirement fund. It's a welfare program. There is no "lock box". Therefore it taps the taxpayers, and as taxpayers, we have every moral right to complain and adjust. We also have every right to demand that the program be destroyed.

She tried Newman, you must be really pissed at the Republicans. I'm sure you were just getting ready to post a scathing post again Bob Latta.
