Marcy Wins Ninth; Voters Lose

In the end, the Kaptur-Iott race embodies everything that's wrong with American politics. It's not just enough to defeat someone in the arena of ideas...no, no. You have to personally destroy people. Up to this weekend, Iott ran a solid campaign going up against an entrenched incumbant who's built a formidable political appuratus to keep her in the House. However, Iott should have known better. Nazi imagery...no matter how innocent it might seen...is still Nazi imagery and still sparks a visceral reaction. Iott had to have known that given the uber-toxic atmosphere of our political landscape, that the nanosecond he became a reasonable threat to her, left wing operatives would be digging for any dirt and ammunition to use on him.

However, this is not a turning point in the national picture. Real Clear Politics still had the ninth district in the safe column for the Democrats and every indication was that Iott was probably running about 10 points behind. The big loser in this whole Iott-Nazi story is the voters of the Ninth who deserve a chance to make a choice on their ballot. They're the ones who are being deprived and disenfranchised from having the choice they deserve.

We are well, well, well past the point where someone needs to have a Joseph Welch moment, stand up, and declare: "Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

Who in their right mind would want to run for public office given this actuely poisonous atmosphere? Why would anyone subject themselves to this process when apparently everything is an open book and your personal life nothing more than a talking point and a soundbite for your opponent? Politics has become pro wrestling...no wait, it's become worse. It's become Bloodsport. And this weekend, Marcy Kaptur and her supporters backed up by Big Labor and the Teacher's Union went Chong Li on Rich Iott and delivered the killshot.

Is this what being in, or attempting to be in, public life has come to? The personal destruction of a perceived political 'enemy.' Have we sunk this far? Ideas trumped by political thuggery of the nth degree? Running for office not an exercise in trying to help others but to cultivate, project, and eventually prosper from the power you gain?

Is it no wonder that Toledo is a city rapidly spiraling downward and imploding like the festering black hole it's become and taking all of Northwest Ohio with it?

Who will stand up to Marcy and her special interest groups who rule the city with an iron fist and grind anyone into the dirt who stands in the way with their jackbooted minions?

Who will be the one to stand up and say, ""Have you no sense of decency, ma'am? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"

No votes yet

What the hell is a "festering black hole"? I've heard of black holes. I did not know that they fester. And, ahem, I do believe people can still vote for Rich if they like, even if they disagree with his admiration for people who murdered 6 million innocents.

I wish peace and prosperity for all.

Don, try reading the piece again. You clearly missed the point.

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

But what destroyed his chances--the fact that he impersonated war criminals or the fact that someone wrote an article about it? Or was it his reaction--ignorant to the very possibility that he may have offended someone--that did him in?

Wouldn't voters lose more if they cast a ballot, uninformed, and it turned out they sent someone to Congress who doesn't understand the history he claims to be fascinated by? How could he understand today's politics if he doesn't understand the atrocities of the Wikings division?

A.H., all they're doing is a good thing. From Brown and Allred putting an illegal immigrant into deporation jeopardy to the disparaging of war reenactors it's all a good thing.

This proves the polls that the issues are on the sides of the Tea Party and they must resort to tactics such as this to hold onto what is a "Safe Seat".

Now note, I've never once said I ever thought Iott had a chance in hell of winning this race. In fact I believed the contrary because there's plenty of stupid people in Toledo, just look at who they voted in for City Council. Yet that they have to do this shows that they are worried, scarred and they should be.

Nov 2nd will come with a few "OMG" moments where Safe Dem districts end up going red. If Dems don't pull in a high turnout this election will look like 1894 instead of 1994. This election will all but ensure the Republicans hold at least one house of the legislature for the next 6 years (House for at least 2, Senate for the next 4) all because of who will be up for reelection in the next two rounds of voting.

I hope these last two years of the Dems throwing their weight around was worth it. This election is a mandate and a total repudiation of their liberal ideals. Good luck replacing Ginsberg with someone as liberal on the S.C. Good luck with redistricting.

They haven't realized what they lost just yet. But they will.

MikeyA

"all they're doing is a good thing."
"they must resort to tactics..."
"who they voted in for City Council"

Has it concurred to you that the Boston Globe reporter might have just stumbled upon this? I mean if there were a "they," then wouldn't the story have originated within the local Toledo area? You know you're local "they" like The Blade?

Did you see the "Wiking" recruitment video? No one needs to spin this stuff against Iott.

What a complete fool!

Wouldn't your superiors ask a few questions of you, if you were a member of that outfit? I bet you'd have to fight to retain your security clearance. You would have to struggle to keep your military career from being flushed down the toilet if you pulled this crap.

C'mon!

How does someone who's been a member of this site for only 36 mins suddenly know I'm in the military?

I'm guessing a troll!!!!

Quit astroturfing and post under your normal nickname please.

MikeyA

I don't think so. You've written about your military stuff a lot.

Quit trying to deflect.

Answer the question.

What would be your superiors' reaction if you were a member of a Nazi SS re-enactment unit?

Hell, what would your subordinates have to say? I bet you'd lose credibility with them, along with your career.

Do you have to be Gary to be a Troll?

I'm not deflecting. I won't answer your questions until you post under your normal nickname.

It's a common courtesy.

MikeyA

Because this is the only nickname that I have.

Nice smokescreen though.

I'll answer for you.

If your military superiors found out that you were a member of an SS reenactor unit, your a$$ would be in a sling and you know it.

If only you would post under your normal nickname and I could tell you how wrong you are. Sometimes I hate being a man of princples.

MikeyA

Refuse to do it? Well, that's unfortunate. I have to go to bed now. I will be back tomorrow. Maybe then you'll find the courage and I can answer your question.

MikeyA

I hope these last two years of the Dems throwing their weight around was worth it. This election is a mandate and a total repudiation of their liberal ideals. Good luck replacing Ginsberg with someone as liberal on the S.C. Good luck with redistricting

Whatever happens Nov. 2, it isn't a repudiation of any 'liberal' ideals, any more than elections as recent as two and four years ago were repudiations of 'conservative' ideals.

Don't get too drunk over gaining seats here and there next month. Whoever is in power will be in cross-hairs of voters the NEXT time around. Idealogy doesn't have a damn thing to do with it.

Tea-partiers are the current flavor-of-the-month. If and when they actually get to govern, all that good flavor will start to vanish, and the cycle will begin again.

LOL

"Whatever happens Nov. 2, it isn't a repudiation of any 'liberal' ideals, any more than elections as recent as two and four years ago were repudiations of 'conservative' ideals."

Nope you guys said it yourself and have kept saying it. It was a repudiation of BUSH and as much as you've tried to run on him this time COUGH Portman COUGH it's not working.

"Don't get too drunk over gaining seats here and there next month. " Here and there? How many seats won't qualify as "here and there"? 40? 50? 60? 70? 100?

In fact the GOP has turned at least 5 states into "Safe pickups" at this point with more as "tossup" with still 3 weeks to go. 5 is a big pickup of Senate seats in a Presidental election in a midterm it's HUGE. Being that a 10 seat pickup is possible this could be a LANDSLIDE. To quote the Big Lebowski "Nothing is F&$#*D? THE PLANE HAS CRASH INTO THE MOUNTAIN!"

" If and when they actually get to govern, all that good flavor will start to vanish, and the cycle will begin again."

And here's why the Dems should be afraid. They don't have to govern! All they have to do is not be the party of no but the party of HELL NO! and they will have fulfilled their campaign promises. In the next cycle the Dems have MORE seats to defend giving the GOP the possibility of MORE pickups.

MikeyA

Democrats lose seats this year, Republicans lost seats two and four years ago..it's not a repudiation of ANY party or political philosophy. It's 'what have you done for me in the last two months, dammitt, I'm not happy, and I'm voting you out.'

I don't know any serious Democrat who believed that because their party dominated elections in 2006 and 2008 the country was suddenly mostly liberal and those voters were going to continue to vote Democrat forever and ever and ever again.

Tea-partiers? The minute they're sworn in, the hot air starts leaving the balloon. Sorry, after all the braying, all the noise, at the end of the day, constituants do want something from their rep.

LOL, I remember '94. Big win Republicans mid-terms. Clinton re-elected two years later. Most Americans today would be just fine with a repeat of the state of the nation from '92-2000. If that means Republicans have some power and get some credit, fine by most voters, including me.

Who will stand up to Marcy and her special interest groups who rule the city with an iron fist and grind anyone into the dirt who stands in the way with their jackbooted minions?

Good for you for asking the question. I have your answer, nobody will. As they cower, the fearful whisper among themselves, knowing not one among them may speak the truth to power. How dare they reveal what they may know or what they may suspect of the all powerful Congresswoman who holds them hostage.

I however Fear No Evil, color me crazy.

I'm still voting for Iott, guess that makes me a nazi sympathizer.

American Heartland, you imply that the Kaptur campaign is somehow "behind it". This cannot be further from the truth. Is pretty easy for any rational person to see that the media is quite interested in reporting on the oddities of some tea-party candidates. THAT'S what happened here. You're nothing more than a partisan hack who thinks he's somehow above the ugly side of politics.

Pink Slip

Kaptur's campaign behind it? Chris Redfern has a big mouth...that's how it is common knowledge among those groups--- that Kaptur is behind it.

We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.-Ben Franklin

Pinky, I could play the name-calling game and say that you're the real partisan hack and enabler who's complicit in the slow self-destruction of Toledo...but I'm not going to.

In your haste to spin this as some partisan cheap shot, you totally missed the point of the piece. I'm not above the ugly side of politics; I'm tired of it.

There’s no reason that Congress can't do something that the cynics, naysayers, and hardcore partisans from all sides said couldn’t be done- bring back accountability to the government, restore confidence in the political process, and most importantly make the hard choices needed to move the country forward.

There's no reason Congress can't do the responsible thing and balance the budget and live within their means- just like millions of ordinary Americans do.

There’s no reason Congress can't pass common sense immigration reform legislation to strengthen our borders and offer a realistic plan to deal with the millions of illegal aliens in our country.

There’s no reason a common sense tort reform package can’t be passed to reduce the glut of frivolous lawsuits that clog our judicial system and help businesses, particularly small business, bring down their cost while protecting the right of individuals to redress wrongs in the judicial system.

There's no reason our health care system can't be reformed without resorting to costly, national health care schemes, pharmaceutical medicines made more affordable, health insurance made more affordable for all which would also help businesses keep their costs down. Malpractice insurance reform would bring down the cost of insurance for doctors which would in turn result in reduced cost to patients

There’s no reason the Patriot Act can’t insure the safety of Americans without compromising our principles of freedom or the Constitution.

There’s no reason that the cumbersome tax code can’t be reformed and simplified. Instead of spending hours figuring out a tax form, most citizens should only need minutes to complete it.

There’s no reason politicians can’t put put the common good ahead of political considerations.

The people who have a right to be angry are not partisans who care more about promoting their party instead of the promoting the general welfare.

The people who have every right to be angry are ordinary Americans who’ve seen their government hijacked by extremists on both sides of the aisle and special interest groups.

The people who have every right to be angry are ordinary Americans who fight a never ending battle to feed their families and pay their mortgages with stagnant wages against the rising tide of the cost of living.

The ones who don’t show up at expensive fund raisers or write out large checks to candidates.

The ones who are losing their houses at an exponential rate to foreclosure.

The ones who have to work multiple jobs to keep up and can’t afford the cost health insurance thanks to the greed of pharmacuetical companies, trial lawyers and insurance companies.

The ones who’ve pretty much tuned out the political process for the one dollar, one vote, slime-filled cesspool that’s it’s become.

Those are the ones who have the right to be angry; not partisans who shine the light on the cockroaches who infest the other parties while ignoring the ones that infest their own.

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

The big nosed coward bill maher exposed Christine O'Donnell saying she once engaged in witchcraft (no big deal to me, better to be a witch than a beared communitst) when she appeared on Politically Incorrect. Bill maher had this Rich Iott wearing a German uniform while re-enacting on his show. That old dried-up hag marcy kaptur has been on his show many, many times. The kaptur campaign probably fed this to maher. He ran with it.

I say what is worse is marcy kaptur saying the terrorists that blew up the World Trade Center are patriots just like the Green Mountain Boys and the American Patriots that fought for our independence. That is beyond insane. The old hag should be taken to task for that!!!!!!!

"Old dried-up hag"? Damn, you're good. Keep bringing it on. Sock it to 'em.

I wish peace and prosperity for all.

Listen you old washed up baseball (?) player that I have never heard of, if you don't like what I'm saying, don't read it. Are you so stupid you can not understand the concept? What, too many foul balls to your head?

What is it, do I excite you?

No, I imagine you're fat and ugly and sipping Budweisers. But I've always admired sharp-tongued women, if indeed you are a woman. No foul balls off the head, but I did take a few pitches to the noggin after I stepped to the plate. That was back before they started wearing those plastic batting helmets. Maybe that explains why I'm voting for Iott.

I wish peace and prosperity for all.

You can't rationally reconcile your feel-good non-partisan essay with your previous statements:

"Marcy Kaptur and her supporters backed up by Big Labor and the Teacher's Union went Chong Li on Rich Iott and delivered the killshot. "

And this one:

"Who will stand up to Marcy and her special interest groups who rule the city with an iron fist and grind anyone into the dirt who stands in the way with their jackbooted minions?"

These kinds of partisan shots can be heard on WSPD any day of the week. They are not the thoughts of fair-minded independent who's just "tired" of the extremes on both sides. You are part of the problem which you describe.

Pink Slip

Again, Pinky, I don't feel good about any of this. The system stinks and the fact that you seem to want to stick your head in the ground, run around with your fingers in your ears shouting 'LA, LA, LA, LA,' and deny just how badly the Democrats, who've run Toledo for well over 30 years, have systematically run the city into the ground tells me you are the problem.

That's not a partisan statement; it's a fact.

Whether you like it or not, Marcy Kaptur is part of that ruling cabal. Any REASONABLE person could connect the dots and put two and two together to figure out just what took place here. It's the same politics of personal destruction that's turned our political processes into a deathmatch where the aim is not to just win on the basis of ideas and principles but to completely destroy any and all threats to your power.

That's not a partisan statement; that's a fact.

In fact, I'll take it a step further. If the outlying counties were smart, they'd completely disassociate themselves from any economic or regional attachments to Toledo and band together to form their own until the city can get its act together. There's a reason why Levis Commons in Wood County is thriving while Southwyck has been bulldozed and Northtowne is an empty shell of what it once was.

In fact, I'll take it even further. Sylvania, Whitehouse, Waterville, Maumee, and Oregon have no reason to stay entangled to Toledo while it sinks like the Titanic after hitting an iceberg. They'd be better off disentangling themselves from Toledo and create their own economic group...or just plain secede from Lucas County alltogether and leave Toledo to it's own devices.

In the end, Pinky, I really don't care if you buy it or not. I don't do partisan statements. I do facts.

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

In American Heartland's mind, it's highly-partisan if it's something he disagrees with. However, blaming everything on Democrats is not partisan at all--it's a reasonable position. Hahahahahaahahaha....you're pathetic.

Pink Slip

Really? Then what party has controlled Toledo for the past 30 or so years?

The pathetic thing is the fact that you can't handle the truth.

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

AH

Because all the other Rustbelt cities are thriving, right?

Pink Slip

No, no, no. You're trying to deflect this. Which party has controlled Toledo for the past 30 years?

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

I'm not deflecting anything. Toledo is not a self-contained economy. Toledo was doing much better in the mid-late 90's So was the US economy as a whole.

Hmm....come one now, 2+2= ?

Pink Slip

Toledo 'doing better' in the mid to late 90's = not a plethora of good paying jobs available. In fact, Toledo was way behind Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati. Southwyck was dying. Northtowne I believe was already gone.

Toledo continues to lag badly in terms of business growth in comparison to the 'three C's.'

You cannot be hostile to business and then expect business to come to your city.

You cannot have a school system that is essentially run by Fran Lawrence and the teacher's union and expect people to want to move to your city.

Toledo is the largest city in Northwest Ohio. It's long overdue that it started acting like one. What Toledo has now is a group, a ruling elite, who controls the city with the help of various special interest groups...ie...unions etc. What Toledo needs is new and dynamic leadership and that means change. And I'm not talking party here; I'm talking mindset.

Being in public service means...serving the people. Not special interest groups. Not yourself. Too many politicians on both sides carve out a nice pension and health care benefits while their constiuents struggle.

There are too many people/ pols out there who see politics as a game. For a lot of people in the middle, lower middle class struggling to get by, it's not.

You want things to improve? Then stop playing 'the game.'

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

"In fact, Toledo was way behind Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati."

You have no idea what you're talking about. Toledo was EASILY ahead of Cleveland and was on par with Cincy in terms of unemployment in the 90's .

Pink Slip

I worked in Toledo in the 90's. I most certainly DO know what I'm talking about. And I didn't mention unemployment specifically. Stop singling out snippets of sentences and spin them in your direction.

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

I worked in Toledo in the 90's too. You can't make sweeping generalizations without the facts to back them up. So go ahead & provide them. I tried to start you off with a commonly used economic indicator--unemployment.

Pink Slip

Okay, since I answered your questions, you have to answer mine...

Has Toledo benefitted from a one party monopoly over the past 30+ years?

What's your explanation for Toledo lagging behind other cities in terms of economic growth and attracting business and you can't mention the words Democrats, liberals, Republicans, or conservatives.

Political Championship Wrestling- putting politics in proper perspective by presenting it as pro wrestling.

Coming in January, a political satire about the sorry state of American Politics- Jesusland vs. Progressiveville.

Kaptur's campaign behind it?
You betcha.
How do I know?Chris Redfern has a big mouth...that's how.

We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.-Ben Franklin

The proof that liberalism has been repudiated this election cycle is in the issues. This campaign is a clear show of that. Rather than run on the issues the Dems have moved to cheap smoke and mirror gimmicks like the picture. (Many aren't even puting Democrat in their ads LOL)

Marcy is a 30 year veteran of congress. Why isn't she running on her record? Why does she insist on attacking Iott on something the guys he sold his company to did? Not good for someone who wins 60% of the vote consistently.

The big one is the healthcare takeover. That was supposidly the reason they lost in 1994 (according to liberals) was they didn't pass Hilarycare. What's the excuse this time?

Yet the same issues that ousted the GOP in 2006 is the same issue that we're debating today - fiscal responsibility. Bailouts - pork, whatever you call it the electorate have not changed their mantra. And while the GOP controlled all three legislatures for 6 years it took the Dems only 2 to undue it. And I predict that GOP gains will surpass the Dem gains in '06 and '08.

The Dems gambled on something they've wanted for years. Healthcare. They got it but it will come at a cost. Will they be able to keep it? Doubtful. It has to pass funding and Supreme court muster and it will almost certainly fail the latter.

I said it before and I'll say it again, they should have passed Obamacare in the lame duck session where they didn't have to face the voters and by the time they did they would have had more than enough time to spin it in their favor. People haven't accepted it and they will pay a price for it.

MikeyA

The day after the election, marcy gets moved away from the Holy Gavel, period. The only question is-how far away. It will never be within her reach, again. And Rich Iott will still be, well, rich. That's a win in my book.
