Now US Congress buys only ‘Made in America’ goods

Is this a good idea? Can this be done? How much will this cost? How many small items will now need to be found?
====

Taking a protectionist move on its economy, the US House of Representatives on Wednesday passed two different bills that stipulate that the Congress and the Department of Homeland Security buy only goods made in the US.

Introduced by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, the Made in America Act mandates the Congress to purchase US-made goods and services.

With the anger growing in the country and along with it the vitriol of misguided multimillionaire demagogues telling the middle-class their version of what ills America one article stands out, "A Recovery’s Long Odds" by Bob Herbert. He gives a vision of the disaster that is America 2010.

Remember, Rep. Kaptur opposed NAFTA from the get-go, irritating many in her Clinton-led political party. The representative has principles, and she has never deviated from them. We are fortunate to have her as our voice in Washington.

I would venture to say having not read the verbage of this law that this would violate existing law. Primarily several government laws which dictate the use of bid contracts which call for the government to use the cheapest possible vendor that can deliver a service or product to acceptable standards.

Chances are it doesn't make it to the Senate floor and are tabled.

MikeyA

I agree Mikey..I don't think the Senate will pass it.

This bill has been around since the 1930's but previous versions included an escape hatch for overpriced American-made items. Kaptur's new bill does not have that provision. Welcome to the $200 American-made pencil! As a taxpayer, I want the legislature to spend MY money wisely whether it is made in the US or elsewhere.

Kaptur's legislation has already sparked push-back overseas with foreign governments saying they will not buy American made products for their legislatures. That's sure going to help the trade deficit! This is exactly the result of tariffs and other protectionism measures... they always backfire and end up hurting American industry more than helping.

"Made in America" is just election year grandstanding.

What company are they gonna buy Obama's teleprompters from? Didnt Obama just give 150.4 Million in stimulus funds to a North Korean owned company? And didnt Government Motors just spend $500 million on an assembly plant in Mexico??

Not to mention Obama's precious Blackberry. I think RIM is a Canadian company.

What? I thought McCain invented the Blackberry?

What is it with you people? You spend most of your time bitching about unemployment and screaming "We need jobs in the U.S.!" A moderate Democrat proposes that Congress purchase only from U.S. companies with employees living in the U.S. and you start screaming "No, their wages will be too high!" So, fine, let's let the corporations keep sending jobs to Mexico and other cheap-labor countries. What a collection of idiots you are. Bitch, bitch, bitch and when someone tries to do the right thing, you desperately try to find some reason to bitch about that, too. Why don't you take your sorry asses over to ToledoTalk and discuss Mexican cuisine in Toledo? Know whadda saying?

Patience is a great virtue.

Ditto that donwert!

Yes, it's true, Obama gave $150.4M to a North Korean company, with the agreed upon purpose of obliterating South Korea. How the money will be used remains to be seen. We do know that Obama hates democracies and wants to begin his decimimation of free societies worldwide, beginning with the Korean peninsula. He has stopped importation of Kias and trebled shipments of wheat and rice to the North. Obama's ultimate goal it to make sure North Korea is armed with nuclear weapons, with long-range missiles carrying the warheads. It's all unsettling, Billy. I'm thinking I might not vote for his re-election. How say you, idiot?

Patience is a great virtue.

Maybe he got the idea from News Corp/Fox News. Besides funding the Mosque at ground zero, they also like to hire the North Koreans.

sMarmy Kaptur introduces the "Made in America Act" which mandates Congress to purchase US-made goods and services.

And Chrysler is now owned by the Italian company Fiat.

Therefore, Marcy Kaptur demands that Congress DO NOT BUY JEEPS. It is better to put Toledo workers out of work because Jeep is owned by an Italian company.

And if GM does get sold to the ChiComs, does that mean the rest of the Toledo UAW workers at Powertrain will get the shaft too?

VOTE FOR MARCY YOU UNION MORONS! I LOVE IT WHEN SHE SHAFTS HER CONSTITUANTS!
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Don't blame me,
I didn't vote for a
socialist.

that Marcy has no idea how business operates. The world has moved to a global economy and Marcy's protectionist ideology will only act to further destroy those doing business in the USA. including American companies.

Honda makes a Civic that is assembled in Canada but made with American parts. These parts were produced by Americans here in the USA. So can Congress still buy this car? And what about those Jeeps that are built by a company that is majority owned by an Italian company?

toledojim

Congress doesn't buy Civics, Jeeps or any other type of four-wheeled vehicles powered by internal-combustion engines. Our forward-thinking, Democratic-led Congress is reducing the deficit and helping save the environment by having all employees on Capitol Hill ride bicycles.

Patience is a great virtue.

LOL don, if you don't think Congress buys Civics I would welcome you to come out here and TRY to find a government vehicle that doesn't have a Honda or Toyota emblem on it. LOL

MikeyA

@Don and Paul. Please describe what you mean by "made in America". I'm curious if it means goods manufactured here by unions, goods manufactured here by non union employees, goods manufactured here in part with some foreign parts included (canada, mexico), etc. etc. Please be specific so that I understand your postion better on "made in America". This is good dialogue.

Fred,
It's past your bedtime. You've got a radio show in the morning. Don't stay up late trying to instigate people. Get some sleep. Sweet dreams. And wake up tomorrow morning knowing that we really are all cool with each other.

Patience is a great virtue.

Is nod-nod time some kind of baby talk for something? This isn't late for me Don, and I'm suprised you took the opportunity to educate me as instigation. Unless of course you aren't able to answer the question about "made in America" which I suspect is true. Cool with each other? I'm not cool with you Don, I don't even know you except for your posts. Based on those I would never be "cool" with you. I can't be "cool" with someone who believes they know better than I how to spend my money, or someone who wants the government to continue to do things for which it has no authority. No Don, I don't think we will ever be "cool" with each other. But I'm cool with that.

I would say Fred the Prius you drive is made in Japan by Japanese auto wokers who are not Americans so that makes you Un-American!

See that's where we differ Paul Wohlfarth. I would say I am a real American. I believe in FREEDOM. The freedom to choose which car I drive. By the way I get 45 mpg which doesn't hurt., and I'm keeping the air clean for retired people like you so you can live longer.

Fred,
Sniff, sniff (eyes well with tears). How can you be so hurtful? How can you say such mean things? How can you toss me aside when I've been so much a part of your life? All of the local Tea Party meetings. Biking to the Bay. Do you remember how we looked into each other's eyes at the intermodal meeting? My mama told me you were a heartbreaker. Mama was right, it looks. Does this mean our date on Thursday at 6:30 at J. Alexander's (on Talmadge near Monroe) is off? Sniff. This time, Fred, you really hurted me.

Patience is a great virtue.

It's great that you try to initiate conversation. But then you fade away. At least jr at Toledo Talk stays tuned in and contributes his thoughts to threads. And you seem unable to add to the exchanges on your site. And your introductory comments are insipid: "Is this a good idea? Can this be done? How much will this cost? How many small items will now need to be found?" Whatever you meant with your last sentence is beyond me. Small items not found? Good Lord, where did those small items go? Can you initiate, Chris, a thread with declarative sentences instead of questions? Oops, used one myself. You should initiate threads with declarations and not questions. Speaking out and not asking questions is how people get themselves elected to office. But am I overly critical? Do I think you blew it when running for school board? And do you think I can help trying to find those small items?

Patience is a great virtue.

Would it be useful? Can users here handle it? Does my opinion count? Should I provide the answers? Should the users provide the answers? Why so many questions? Why so little time? To be or not to be? What can I do?

classic.

Because you are an okay guy, no? Are you not still happily married? Do you not maintain this website for jerks like me? Do you not have at least one beautiful child? Do you not love her to death, as all daddies should? Do I appreciate your honesty and sincerity? And do I understand that those traits did not translate into elective politics? Do I appreciate your willingness to get into the political arena? Do I admire your courage to run for school board as a Republican and not surrender your party affiliation? Was I surprised you got the electoral shit kicked out of you on Election Day? Do you think I was not impressed nonetheless by your fortitude? Does it mean anything to you that I think you're crazy for sticking with the GOP? But does it count, to you, that we out here, Ds and Rs, also respect those who stick with their political parties and principles? Most importantly, do you not think those of us out here do not admire how good a husband and father you are? Even if you're a g-d Republican?

Patience is a great virtue.

so little answers. Why is life so not fair? :) Donwert your perspective is always welcome. :)

I waited a few day hoping Don would be able to figure out an answer to my questions about what is "made in Amercia". I thought at least he'd be able to use the internet if not his own opinion to come up with something. But as is often the case he, like many right wing nut jobs, is incapable of answering a question. End of thread I suppose.

Any statement I make is the opinion of me exercising my first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and is generally permitted.

"Right wing nut jobs"? Didn't you mean left wing nut jobs? But, hey, we're all nut jobs, whatever our political beliefs, aren't we? To answer your question, the only thing still made in America is the Toyota Prius, although the left wing nut job media would have us believe they are built in Japan. Damn those progressive/socialist/communist/marxist newspapers, the same subscribed to by our Kenyan-born, Muslim-raised, pro-terrorist president. But "right wing nut jobs" does have a nice ring to it, accurately describing the lunatics who have gone beyond the right, and into a sphere that sane people cannot comprehend.

Patience is a great virtue.
