We know what's important to Republicans. Ensuring that BP's damage cap is $75 million and that the American tax payer bails out Big Oil.

Heaven forbid - a president who, although this is clearly the fault of the corporation that caused it through reckless actions, actually says the buck stops with him in terms of ensuring a solution to this catastrophe. gosh, that's horrible, someone who isn't trying to pass the responsibility off to others, instead says that he is going to ensure something happens to solve this ongoing problem.

Some are suggesting a boycott of BP. I am not saying that BP's accountability should go unchecked. But, the negative effects of unintended consequences of a boycott may well offset the punishment of BP it is intended to produce.

There are many independent stations who pump BP gas. Should these small businesses be punished for a mistake of one of their suppliers? Consumer cost at competing stations like Sun Oil and Marathon may well increase due to supply and demand directly hurting your wallet. Many high paying jobs at the local BP refinery will suffer. Future R&D of alternative energies currently being conducted by BP will be scaled back due to lack of funds. Additional funding of the clean-up operation could be curtailed by BP simply by them declaring bankruptcy thus diverting the cost back to the US Government and we know where that will lead; higher taxes on gasoline, more government bailouts, increases in the debt therefore mortgaging more of your child's future, etc.

So while I do not know what sort of punishment should be instilled against BP, I certainly do not think a boycott will have the intended results desired.

Remember that logical well thought out choices generally have a better outcome then those based on emotion.

To summarize, IMO a boycott of BP will hurt you more than it does this Corporate giant.
