Is it ok for a President to lie?

Just a simple question to all. Is it ok for a President to lie? Notice "A".

No votes yet

It depends on what he/she is lying about.

If a President lies in order to obstruct justice or to cover up wrongdoing, then no: this is criminal behavior. However, if we are going to get into a moral discussion about lying, then we would have to condemn just about every politician, as stretching/spinning/inventing the truth goes with the territory.

Heck, I myself sometimes prevaricate to keep from hurting people's feelings or to boost their spirits. I occasionally laugh at jokes in social settings that really are not funny, I tell people they look well when they are in a hospital bed, and I say things like "good to see you" to people I might otherwise rather avoid running into. Are these "lies" worthy of condemnation? I doubt it.

So Molsonator: are you speaking in a criminal sense, or are you referring to the sort of everyday political BS like "the economy is growing stronger" or "I promise not to raise taxes"?

...when a president doesn't reveal the entire truth - as in when he doesn't disclose details about military operations or intelligence.

Omission can also be a lie, but when a president does it to protect our national security, is that wrong?

Certainly a person can lie by omission; more common is the prevarication of the truth about a sensitive subject.

Q: Slick Willy, did you or did you not have sex with Monica?
A: Well, that depends...

What he should have said was something on the order of None of your damn' business, butt breath. See you after school, and bring your shit.

All kidding aside, I wouldn't want a president who told our great nation the truth about everything. What the president can do, and what King George I did, was to tell the press that certain subjects were off limits and other subjects must have questions screened. No reason need be given.

I have no objection to the President of the United States refusing information to the general public on subjects of national security.

That's because you are a phoney....it's not "showing compasion" for others to lie to them...it's lying...

"Are these "lies" worthy of condemnation?"

Condemnation?...no....you cant condemn water for being wet...you merely point it out for what it is...and try not to drown in it...

Kinda like you actually attending a meeting where riot ,weapons, and means of escape are discussed...Then later claiming you "predicted" violence...when in fact you where part of it by not warning the police you had first hand knowledge of planned riot when you attended that meeting...(weapons stashing and getaway cars)...I still think you know the names of these individuals and could have done your civic duty to report these criminals....I even bet one of more of them was a student of yours....

As for the lies Obama tells.....sheesh...where to start....

At the begining I guess...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

I nominate Libsie.

Where to begin indeed.

#1 Transparency. Every new potential law by Congress was going to be posted on the Internet for five days BEFORE being voted on.

#2 Get the Lobbyists and Special Interests out of Washington. There are more Lobbyist with Obama then there ever was with with Bush. This is biggest insult of our intelligence and damage to my country that Mr. Thin Skin has committted IMO.

I could go on...Gitmo, end of the wars, etc. I don't trust anything that comes out of this narcissist's mouth. BLEAH.

Obama is a pathological liar and his web of deceit will be his undoing. That along with his pompous chin up in the air arrogance.

His intelligence is greatly lacking...no wonder he has hidden his college records.

We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.-Ben Franklin

Just spit it out, already, lol.

What big lie has Obama told recently? That's why we're all here...right???

I actually think I might like you if we ever met McCaskey! HA!

Nothing behind this. I am curious where people draw the line?

I believe every president, of every politcal party and persuasion, has lied or at least distorted the truth, mostly in many small and relatively insignificant ways, but also some big ones, over the course of our country's history.

Translation from Libtard to english :Yes Obama LIED so what, everyone lies.

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

"In a finger-wagging televised appearance, Clinton denied to the nation that he had ever had sexual relations with "that woman, Ms. Lewinsky." And FOR ALMOST EIGHT MONTHS, he steadfastly deceived aides and the country about his relationship with the intern. One aide told a grand jury that the President had called Ms. Lewinsky a "stalker." Don't blame me,
I didn't vote for a
socialist.

feels about this question but when "A" president lies and involves others who must lie to cover the lie and so on, well you get the picture. It's not "A" lie it's lie after lie after lie.
Pretty soon we're talking corruption if not in a legal sense, at least a moral one.
My personal opinion is there is a lot of moral corruption due to the telling and covering of lies.

Watergate

Sestakgate.

Hey, since you're here, speaking of other dimwitted conservatives:

Making fun of an 11-year old. Now THAT'S a man's man.

I know, Amy Carter and Chelsea Clinton are now all grown up and you azzclowns need fresh blood.

In all honesty McCaskey, although I know he was mocking the Pres and not the child, it was too close for my comfort when it comes to not involving the children. Beck crossed the line on that one.

That being said, President Obama should refrain from trying to use his children to pull on America's heart strings.

Iran-Contra Gate. President Ronald Reagan sells weapons to Iran the quietly uses the profits to support the Contra Rebels in Nicaragua, in direct opposition to the United States Congress who has refused to allow the United States to support the Contras. Congress is pissed off, but the Prez gets a pass.

Lewinsky Gate. Slick Willy plays hide the salami with Monica Lewinsky and she can't keep her yap shut about it. Tripp blows the whistle and Slick gets grilled by the United States Congress. Hitlery tries to bounce an ash tray off his head. Both Congress and Hitlery miss.

Watergate. The original 'Gate', where Tricky Dick Nixon is discovered not playing nice in the sandbox and then... well, a bunch of stuff happened. Tricky Dick is grilled, then barbecued by the United States Congress but quits before he can be impeached. I don't think the Stupid Party ever quite forgave the Moonbats for this one.

Pentagon Gate. The key words are unconstitutional and military. Super secret papers are leaked to the press who discover they are holding the literary equivalent of a nooklar device. Thinking quickly the device is detonated at ground zero. It seems that LBJ and Tricky Dick have been hammering North Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia without telling anyone, and that's wrong. The press grills the United States Congress, all of whom collectively shrug and try to suppress the papers. When their best efforts to suppress fail, the Pentagon Papers are published (again) and not much else happens.

Debate Gate. President Ron Reagan somehow, and we have never found out exactly how, but somehow he and his crew get hold of The Peanut Man's playbook. The United States Congress searches for the guilty, persecutes the innocent and praises the non-participants but in the end, Congress comes up with an empty sack. Reagan has a good laugh.

Okay, I'm bored. All these scandals involve lies told by executive staff, elected officials and important others who deliberately broke the law and lied about it. There are a lot more scandals, but what's the use?

"Michelle, you're busting out the seams in that rag"

Sometimes a President needs to lie.

I would not trust a President who did not lie. It is part of the job. Without lies in government nothing gets accomplished. Accomplish the goal and then tell me how you did it. That's why Bush II will be viewed as one of our great Presidents. He was a hell of a liar. Right up there with Eisenhower and Kennedy.
