Oh where, Oh where is Brian Wilson

The Blade reported last night that Brian Wilson is no longer in town but in Virginia. His house in Moss Creek is vacant and he and his wife purchased a house in Virginia.
If this is all true where is his integrity? The last 1/2 of his show he closes with Fred LaFebvre telling him he will see him in the morning. Could this also indicate that Fred is also not in Toledo?

Toledo news radio talk-show host Brian Wilson talks about the Toledo region and its politics as if he has a front-row seat, but he has actually been broadcasting from a location in Virginia more than 500 miles away.

The three-hour Brian Wilson and the Afternoon Drive airs weekdays on WSPD 1370-AM and Mr. Wilson makes it sound as if he is in the Glass City at the radio station's downtown studio.

I don't see a problem with it. Not in todays world.

I personally want a local guy to talk about local things. They have something vested in the community and truly want to see it do better. Wilson has always been outside agitator, now more than ever. He’s no better than Rev. Floyd Rose coming to town, stirring up hate and resentment and leaving. His has no interest in seeing Toledo do better for himself or his family.

I personally want a local guy to talk about local things. so if they replace him with a local conservative, you'll start listening?

Make that 'coming BACK to Toledo'. The "reverend" Rose was a local boy who retired to the south...

Billy,

I already listen; it’s whether I’ll keep listening. I swear I heard him mention living in “Moss Creek” in just the last week or so. I wonder why Wilson didn’t feel he needed to share moving to Virginia with any of his listeners. Maybe because of what he thinks of his listeners.

Wilson: I haven't seen it, but every town has a blog, and they are generally populated by Kool-Aid drinkers, mouth-breathers, has-beens, never-will-be people and so on. It's a game that means nothing. It's generally a hobby for someone to masturbate their ego anonymously. I've been in this business 40 years. They're listeners. They have no clue how this business works.

Well in fairness he nailed you pretty well Billy.

Ive said often that I dont listen to Brian! I carpool and we have K100 on, and at home I rarely listen to the radio. But when BW talks about folks masturbating their egos, I do see that often in how you tell Pink how great he is. I guess everyone finds a use for a tool.

But I tend to agree with both sides. I don't think it matters in this day and age.

But....

If his show is going to be presented as a show driven by local issues, I think he needs to have some skin in the game. Living here accomplishes that. It won't effect his take on the issues, but it will have an impact on his credibility. It may now make it harder for him to get local pols on the show. It will make me think twice about listening to the show, and I've been listening a lot since Denny left.

I suspect that his contract is coming up, and either he knows CC will look to cut his pay, or he's not interested in renewing. Just made the move early.

Personally, I'd have no problem if WSPD just replaced him with Hannity live 3-6p.

If you have nothing more important to worry about you're doing pretty good.

Please advise how Wilson's location in another state differs from the Blade publisher dictating to Toledo from his residence near Pittsburgh, PA?

The Block family owns and publishes the Blade, much like Clear Channel (based in San Antonio, Tex.) owns radios stations like WSPD. Brian Wilson doesn't own and operate WSPD, he's a Clear Channel employee.

I doubt very much John Block himself writes Blade editorials; he has a staff of editorial writers based in Toledo to write them for him. Is he involved in what they write? Yes, I'm sure that's the case being the publisher.

But that's far different than, say, if John Block were writing a story for today's Blade--let's say a double-murder, here in Toledo--based on what happened yesterday, complete with police, witness and family quotes about the victims and how the murders took place---all the while actually being in Pittsburgh yesterday.

The truth is, Brian Wilson has been a professional carpetbagger much of his career, as the Blade itself profiled years ago:

Before hosts such as Mr. Wilson farmed out their services, stations needing a talented substitute host often would have to pay that person’s traveling and living expenses on top of the work fee.
“If you really wanted to have someone fill in for you, you had to bring them to town, and obviously that is really expensive,” said Bill White, program director at WBT in Charlotte, which is among the stations that have used Mr. Wilson’s services.
Mr. Wilson began hosting programs in cities across the country without leaving home, including eventual full-time contracts at KCMO-AM in Kansas City and KSFO-AM in San Francisco.
For a five-week period in 2000, he broadcast four different shows a day in four different cities:
“I did Kansas City from 6 to 9, I did Dallas from 9 to noon, I did Baltimore from 3 to 6, and I did San Francisco from 7 to 10 p.m.,” Mr. Wilson said. “It was absolutely insane.”

He has zero personal attachment to what goes on locally--he's a professional hitman.

By the way, this is far different than Fred LeFebvre, who has lived in these parts for years. Agree or disagree with him, he at least arguably has a personal stake in what happens here.

.

Didn't Bob Frantz broadcast from Cleveland while being a "local host?"

Pretty sure is was Frantz - or did he drive to Toledo to do the show while living in Cleveland?

Nope. Frantz was let go and took a job in Cleveland.

He calls the kettle black on others. But when he does it isn't it worse? We need a local guy here from Toledo. Wake up WSPD!

Wow! This just follows suit in the category of politicians lying to us. I held Mr Wilson in high regard, this sneaking out of town without being honest about it puts a dent in his integrity and the last hope we thought we had, as to shining the light on Toledo corruption. Carry on Mr. Wilson, looks like the very source of your vibrant criticism of the Blade comes back to bite you in the ass.

Yes the blathering BMW will tell Toledo anything it wants to hear, to create controversy, to build ratings at the expense of trashing Toledo's image, then skips town with a load of cash by building the business off his gullible audience. Yes, he slips out the back door keeping his cash cow (listeners) believing in something that's a lie, leading them on. Just like the Wizard of Oz. Who is this man behind the curtain?

Wolfman,
It's hypocritical to put a link to Mr. Wilson's address while posting under a pseudonym, and the link doesn't even work.
Why would you invade his and his wife's privacy like that? The Blade didn't publish their address.
How about posting your REAL name and your address?
And yes, before you go there, I too am using a pseudonym. But I'm not linking to someone's personal information or posting other personal things.

Well I did not post his new address but if I did I think it would be that of a public personality. These things are public by nature on the internet and are easily found within two minutes of searching. The love fest has been long gone for BW just ask Carty and any other public official. WSPD has allowed, for the sake of ratings, this outsider to run rampant with personal attacks and innuendo for over 5 years. I think if you commissioned a poll of Toledoans most would be relieved of his leaving. I think the allure of WSPD has been its Howard Stern approach to radio. It doesn't mean that listeners love BW only the voyeuristic impulse of like driving by an auto accident. Its human nature!
P.S.- The link worked yesterday.

Somebody in Virginia had effectively defaced Ben Konop's wikipedia page. Here's the page version, with the "boo Ben Konop boo" defacement:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ben_Konop&oldid=514263287

This defacement was performed by somebody using IP address 71.63.40.205, which incompletely traces to c-71-63-40-205.hsd1.va.comcast.net. I say "incompletely" since a traceroute times out past the network device 68.86.127.206 (te-3-0-0-ten01.harrisonburg.va.richmond.comcast.net). Network runs from Harrisonburg to Richmond aren't particularly close to where the Toledo Blade reported that Wilson now lives and works:

http://www.toledoblade.com/local/2010/05/26/Brian-Wilson-s-WSPD-Toledo-s...

"According to records from Bedford County, Va., Mr. Wilson and his wife, Carolanne Wilson, paid $340,000 for a home in Huddleston, Va. on Dec. 15, 2009."

(Huddleston is in Bedford County; about 90 miles from Harrisonburg and 120 miles from Richmond.)

That's all I can tell at this time. Meanwhile, here's an irony; look at this map:

http://media.web.britannica.com/eb-media/41/4941-004-EA073E59.gif

On the left side, about 3/4 down, you'll find a town called "Mouth of Wilson". It's real! You can't make this stuff up!
