Toledo Journal looks at difference between cuts and where they are talking about them

Journal talks about how the cuts will effect the central city the hardest and why they are taking their case to a different audience.

They propose shutting down the mostly black Libbey High School, ''consolidating'' two central-city elementary academies that serve a nearly all African American enrollment, and killing off a unique high school whose mostly black students earn college credits.

So where do Toledo Public Schools officials want to hold a public hearing on proposed cuts to erase an anticipated $30.6 million fiscal 2011 deficit? Miles away at Start High School, TPS’ most expensive new school and in a mostly white area of Toledo.

If we only have a current population that we had back in the 50's, wouldnt it only make sense to close some schools and do some consolidation??

It was only kept open by the Gates money and when that dried up they kept it on life support for the last couple years. As of three years ago, there were about 350 kids in that gigantic building that should house around 1200. Maybe if 'we' weren't spending 42 million rebuilding Scott, there would be more money to keep the two academies and the Early College School open.

It could be worse. I just read on Yahoo news that the Kansas City school system is closing 29 of 62 schools at the end of the year to avoid bankruptcy.

I hope no levies are passed and the whole system caves in on itself. The whole system needs to be reset and start all over from scratch. New personnel, administrators, tax structure, laws, etc., A to Z. The system is broke. New game plan, no federal interference, minimum state involvement, no unions. Parent run. Local control. The past one hundred year model has brought us to this point and it won't work any longer. No logical person can claim that what we have been doing is a success by any measure. The union run model is totally dysfunctional and designed to benefit only the union. The school board is and has been nothing but a political process usually used as an entry level political position and a stepping stone to higher office. The only good people in the entire system are the teachers, certainly not all, but I believe most. But they are handcuffed by the broken system we have in place. We the people must stand up and demand better. Vote!! Get involved! You deserve better. You also deserve what we have. You voted for it. How is it working for you now?

You make a number of interesting points. "...Parent run. Local control." "We the people must stand up and demand better. Vote!! Get involved! You deserve better. You also deserve what we have. You voted for it. How is it working for you now? Everyone wants to point fingers. The dismal turnout during elections indicates that it's too much trouble for people to actually get involved. To actually have "parent run, local control" would require a majority of the people participating in their child's education. Novel idea.

If you aren't involved, your child will have to find another school. In order to attend THIS school, we require your involvement. Parent run, local control.
Education is a privilege, not a right. Novel idea.
