Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proposed the early release of 7,500 Michigan inmates

Releasing a man who raped two 8 year old girls in 1998! What in the hell are they thinking? What other inmates will be free to hurt others again? This is just sick. I can think of other ways to save on the prison budget.. think cable tv, internet, and other luxurys many of us law abiders dont have...

If we had not been obsessed with locking up millions of Americans in the failed War on Drugs, there would be a lot more room in U.S. prisons for killers, rapists, and other dangerous criminals like the vile S.O.B. in this story. You would have thought the United States and its experience in Prohibition would have been a lesson in the futility of this approach to intoxicants, but this is not the case.

Anyways, carry on with the obligatory wringing of hands and renting of garments over soon-to-be-freed sexual predators. I do not want to spoil the party with a bunch of wacky ideas about failed government policy.

I would hope that Granholm includes a one way bus ticket with every release to Alabama, Mississippi, and Texas. These are the states that have all the manufacturing jobs that use to support Michigan. The libertarian state of Texas home to Ron Paul can just line em up and shoot em. Problem solved...right?

Statements made are the opinion of the writer who is exercising his first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and are generally permitted.

Very good wolfman..."just line em up and shoot em." I like your way of thinking,

Liberalism is a mental disorder....

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

They just did this in CA.

I'm sort of in agreement with HM on this. Go ahead and legalize drugs. If you want to screw yourself up go for it.

However, and this is a big however, IF because of your drug use you break other laws, (ie, stealing to support your habit) the law should hammer you as hard as possible.

"We're all riding on the Hindenburg, no sense fighting over the window seats"-Richard Jenni

If someone wants to smoke dope and eat Doritos all day long, go for it. Just don't drive while stoned or get methed up and attack someone. Drug use that leads to criminal behavior is a problem, but some doper who spends his free time spaced out in his basement does not infringe on my freedoms.

Moreover, property crimes are in part a function of the War on Drugs, as prices get driven up through interdiction efforts (not to mention government corruption with all that drug cash accumulating underground). Legal drugs would lead to lower prices to the users, and you and I would be a lot less likely to see our plasma screen TVs getting heisted while we are at work to pay for some addict's fix.

A certain percentage of the population (5%, perhaps 10%) will at some point in their lives seek to self-medicate with intoxicants. No matter how expensive drugs get, addicts will pay that price and find a way to fund their habits.

I would rather see drugs decriminalized, subject to a small tax, and have that money pumped into detox programs than to pay for some small-time dealer or addict to rot in jail to the tune of $40,000 a year. Of course, there are many vested interests quite happy to maintain the status quo, so this is all a pipe dream (pun unfortunately intended).

And Zeitgeist: this is a libertarian position, not a liberal one.

I thought you werent going to address me anymore...LOL

I was refering to the prisoner release Mr Wizzard...the release of violent offenders to prey upon more victims...

I have favored decriminalization of hemp for decades...

And as I am fond of reminding people...it's a CONSERVATIVE position....

Some may have noted which side of the debate the LIBERAL was on...

Statists LOVE the drug war...it's an excuse to survail, to stop, search, and harrass,....to invade peoples homes., and to strip them of property without due process..

A socialist DREAM program...

This is where many on the right have their heads up their ass...

"if you legalize drugs more people will do drugs"

Bullcrap.....anyone who wants to do drugs...ALREADY IS....

Nope, just ignoring you on the "Mikey is a socialist" thread. Glad to see you are on the thinking side of the Drug War and not one of those pseudo-small government conservatives who love to spend hundreds of billions on drug enforcement and excessive police state bureaucracy. Kudos.

Every time I hear her name, I'm reminded how visionary the Founding Fathers were when they added the requirement of being born here to being President of the United States. Opps, now watch her "misplace" her birth certificate.
