The Toledo Journal is reporting online that Carty insulted blacks, and one of his top aide's confrims this!
The Journal is reporting that Mayor Finkbeiner made insulting remarks about black men and probably about black women. Mayor Finkbeiner turned down a recommendation to hire a black man because he would be "crucified" if he had two minorities serving as co-directors of the city's Youth Commission.
It is said that Finkbeiner said, "African-American males can't hold jobs and can't take care of their families (or something to that effect), and that African-American women just want to have babies and collect welfare."

I didn't know what yellow journalism is, so I looked it up. Are you saying that the article in the Toledo Journal is bias and has no merit because it was published by them? If you go onto a web site called PACER, the actual depositions are posted. I read some of them and it's a ugly situation.
Yellow journalism is by definition running stories only to sell newspapers or increase viewership.
I am not saying it's biased or has no merit. I am saying it was run as such a long article because the Toledo Journal is trying to incite black toledoans and sell newspapers. The newsworthyness of the article doesn't come into play because the decision to write what they did was only to increase readership.
I contended and still do that many use the term "yellow journalism" in connection with "being yellow" and thus assume the publisher is being less than courageous. This is wrong and not what "yellow journalism" means.
Yellow journalism is also called by some "yellow-kid journalism" because it was named after The Yellow Kid which was a popular cartoon at the time. The cartoon was the first printed in color. The popularity of the cartoon/color and the stories (which we today call tabloid stories) were only added to increase readership not for newsworthyness.
And Joe, I majored in Journalism so I've spent hours with other journalists and we've discussed the misuse of the term at length.

Thank you for your thorough explanation. I don't think this article was written to incite anyone, however. It's an article that exposes some of the ugliness in our community. If this were five years from now I would totally agree with your point of view. The truth is, it's still going on and appears it has not been resolved. We must all embrace the truth, and, the way to get at the truth is to be presented with all the information no matter how distorted or accurate it may be. We cannot discount what has been written because who the people involved are, or the motives of the publishers. What we can do is pray for justice.

Well Joe just look at the facts of this thread.
1. I was called ignorant and accused of trying to incite when I complemented someone for using a term in the correct way.
2. The two African American posters in this thread have: made accusations of race inciting, accused a former mayor of taking down a website, referred to the same mayor as "yellow", accused the judicial system of bias, accused the former mayor of being insensitive at a funeral.
Now I agree we don't know what was in the mind of the publisher but the facts of this thread have given creedence to Billy's original thought and unlike purnhrt I don't believe those comments were meant to incite just point out media bias and putting journalism as a backseat to selling papers.

The truth of the matter is that none of us should have to have this discussion. I'm going to wave the Flag and say that all people in this great Country of ours deserves to be treated fairly and with respect. Unfortunately, there are people who think and behave as if they have created their own version of "Animal Farm" and they can get away with almost anything. I personnaly respect your point of view even though I may not agree with it. On some things let's agree to disagree and lets search for those things we do agree, so that we can find some common ground. Accusations are part of living on this Earth. Remember, we just celebrated the birth of a man who preached peace and love and for his efforts they tortured and murdered him. None of us are exempt from ridicule.
CF has always insisted he has great race relations. If that is the case, why is one of his top employees, who he gave a prestigious award to, stating in a legal document, under oath, that CF is guilty of making inappropriate racial remarks? Hmmmm! Has CF denied these allegations under oath? If CF has denied theses allegations under oath, one of them is lying. So the question is, which one them may be guilty of perjury?
Is it 'YELLOW JOURNALISM " to post an article on a subject that is relevant "TODAY"
Theres a nice photo of CF and TG at birthday bash on Dec. 18, 2009, for the administrative [whatever the title is at this time] . in the current issue of Truth newspaper. THEY ARE FRIENDS, right.? .
Yellow journalism is hyping up something in order to sell more papers and not for news context. Relevance has little to do with it if it's only to create a reaction that will in turn cause more viewer/readership.

This is not really a relevant story. We accuse the Bland of doing the same thing. Why do we need another Bernadette Noe story? She doesn't live here, she no longer holds public office. A story like that is a tabloid story intended to only sell more papers and thus - yellow journalism.
Class question: How can a tabloid style newspaper NOT be considered a "tabloid" in the modern day journalistic definition?

CF and TG are known to be great friend's for decades. We have to give some credit to TG for stepping-out and letting the truth be heard regardless of her great friendship with CF. Her contribution to resolve this situation will bebefit the entire Toledo Community.
Carty Finkbeiner has had an "interesting" relationship with black men. One incident that I will always remember was his disrespectful remarks at the funeral of Flute Rice, one of the educational icons in the black community.
MadJack, Billy and MikeyA, I would say they are, for lack of a better word, ignorant and used to incite rather than to unite.

probably the reason it is relevant is because the trial is due to start soon and this is the time that the judge usually tells you to try to settle. DUH!!!
Still doesn't make it relevant. Newspapers take stories that were once headlines and follows developments in blurbs. Those are columns less than 100 words.
Regardless of the outcome of the trial the fallout as it relates to the public is nill because it will involve no one from the current administration. If Carty or Bob Reinbolt were apart of the current administration it would but they're not and it will serve nothing more than to give the parties involved their day in court. At least the people on Judge Judy get the benefit of a possible rerun.

The Toledo Journal is a FREE weekly newspaper, like the Toledo Free Press, and The Truth etc. I guess that the advertisement helps to keep them in business.
PG was told by people in the African American community that HIZZONER would do to her just what he did, when PG backed him for his run against Jack Ford. He the Mayor Played Her and used TG to do it so that PG couldn"t claim racial discrimination. This is MHO. I don't know GD but DM has a history with some people that I know and he wasn't anything nice. So maybe some people got what they deserved.!!!!!

I have met all three, but I know very little about them. I ran into GD at the Toledo University School of Engineering Technology Ribbon Cutting Ceromony a few weeks ago. Students at Toledo University say that GD is an excellent instructor and is one of the most competent, pleasant and fair instructors they have taken classes from. That's quite an endorsement of his good character.
No one deserves being discriminated against. It doesn't matter if you don't like them, positions they take, or who they back for political office, discrimination is against the law.
The courts disagree...it is perfectly legal to dicriminate against smokers...even to fire or refuse to hire them...
Your are talking about something that's a choice and dangerous to the person smoking and everyone around them. Race and gender and some cultural issues are not by choice. Being an ex-smoker, I know how difficult it is to quit, but I did after smoking for 28 years. The reason I quit, it was killing me and making my children sick. I may have a right to smoke, but I don't have the right to make other people sick or pay for my medical bills because of my smoking. My position is, that discrimination because of race, gender, lifestyle, and religion is wrong and illegal. Zeitgeist, you have rights, and, if for some reason your rights were being violated, I would be one of the first to stand up and fight for your rights if you needed help.
No my rights have not been voilated...but others have....as it is legal to refuse to hire a smoker...
But this is off topic anyways...I only mentioned it for illustration....there are certian forms of discrimination that the left is quite comfortable with....that was just one example...

I know I for one am not the person to stand up for wrong from anyone. Carty Finkbeiner is wrong in his treatment of black people and there is no getting around that. This is not somethng I was told or read about. This I saw with my own two eyes and felt in conversatons with the present mayor either in person or through e-mails.
When you know what you are dealing with you either float like a butterfly (keep your job) or sting like a bee.(stand up and say this is wrong). I choose the latter. Some chose both.
The Toledo Journal presents the truth to the population who desires to know the truth or at least how the other population feels.
The writer of most of the Journal articles is actually a white man, who knows and sees injustice for what it is. I think he is a hero for getting the correct information out and I think the Journal tells it like it is.

The story is not news worthy. It concerns one more instance of abhorrent behavior in the term of a mayor who achieved national notoriety for his bad behavior and was not re-elected. Moreover, if this man, Carty Finkbeiner, actually is a racist, which I doubt is true, how would anyone be able to tell? Much like Purnhrt, Carty hates everyone equally; I've never once seen him discriminate.

I do beleive that CF said and probably did things that were wrong and RACIST. Didn"t he refer to our Mayor elect as a Gorilla? { CAN'T RECALL THE CONTEXT]
I do beleive that all previously named complainants and witnesses heard and saw him in ACTION during his Performances on the 22nd floor, BUT, didn't they help to get him elected? The citizens in this community have also witnessed this behavior, for example, IN his handling of the MARINES when they came to town for urban training.
I have stated to many of my family and friends and CF via e-mail that , IMHO,I felt that he needed to take some kind of medication to help him control his emotions and temper. However I am not a doctor.
I congratulate TG for SOMEWHAT telling the truth UNDER OATH about her 'FRIEND' and Boss. She probably cautioned him any number of times. I don't feel that she threw him completely under the bus, he probably just got his clothes dirty and his shoes scuffed up. I have been a Marine for 8 years come January. After my 4th year I was accepted to a program within the Marine Corps to finish my degree (I was previously a junior at UT). I received my BS in journalism from EMU almost exactly two years ago.
I will probably start work on my Master's in Supply Chain Management while I am in Afghanistan. I don't want to start if I will be too busy there but Penn St. has a good program that is very military friendly.
Only thing I won't do again is sling lead from an M16. The Marines have replaced it with the M4 which is essentially the same but shorter, lighter, and more versatile. Speaking of which I have a great picture one of my Marines took in the field earlier this month that is breathtaking. I need to get more swampbubbles friendly and learn how to post a pic off my hard drive. Haven't tried it yet on this site.

The picture is of an Amphibious Assault Vehicle set in front of a clear night sky. Because it was on a cloudless night during the time where the moon was set the stars are out. Being that we were over 40 miles from any major source of unnatural light everything that can be seen with the naked eye is present.
