It's that time of the year for site suggestions - sound off

Soon I will have some time to work on the Web site and I want to know what are your comments suggestions ideas. How is the speed of the site? New ideas? What do you like and not like (I don't care if you repeat some outstanding issues). Your comments or suggestions will help determine what I do the end of the month. Is there too much going on? Too little?

Some posts are worth reading, and worth other people reading.

If ''CON' is the opposite of 'PRO', does that mean Congress is the opposite of Progress?

to do that with the S List but it is not efficient. How does one judge what is worth reading? Most votes? What I think?

you will do the site a great service by removing the so-called 'profanity' filter.

I know, it's a broken record with me, but it's simply absurd. Allow adults to be adults. Many of the 'nasty' words caught in the filter you can hear on prime-time regular-network TV virtually any night.

Why don't you allow members to vote on this and set policy accordingly? If the majority really want this, so be it. Likewise the other way.

ok

what does everyone else think? Why don't you make a poll McCaskey? Let's put it to vote.

Must we use profanity to make a point or make ourselves bigger ? What is the point of profanity? I can understand it if you stub your toe. Otherwise , in a post or in conversation, you are assuming your rudeness upon other people. Take the "F' word for example. I learned as a teenager that this word refers to sex . Sex is a powerful, beautiful thing created by God to unite a couple. Why is it referred to in a casual way? Words do have meaning, our words can edify or not . Another is the 's' word. Why do people want to talk about excrement ? It brings nasty word pictures to the mind. I can never figure that one out. Let others chime in about this.
We can take the time and effort to learn better words to make a stronger point in our posts. Remeber this program?- http://www.verbaladvantage.com/ Language is an art from , or it can be if we work at it

I am often reluctant to post because it will move down some good posts , or becasue my post is obviously not as important as some currently posted. Would there be a way to have a link or side area for opinions or smaller talk ?
Also, I notice Glass City site allows only posts by the moderator . This SB site is a true venue of freedom and news , anyone can post

worry about moving down a story. Post what ever you feel is important, whenever.

I'm with Mac. Remove the filter.

I'm with cogitate on this; we can figure out how to have a conversation and say what we mean to get our point across with profanity.

My 12 y/o son has been working on reports for school and we're having conversations about writing to get your point across - learning to stay within the guidelines helps you learn how to succinctly get your point across. I remember a college prof who said the word "that" should not be used in writing .. and amazingly I figured out I could take out "that" every where I used it in the report for his class. Know what the forum rules are, whatever the forum is, and abide by them.

We're adults; converse civilly without profanity.

the filter doesn't allow things in that are not even close to 'profanity.'.

It filters out many words simply because Chris, or the software program he uses, finds them 'OBJECTIONABLE." That is not the same as 'PROFANITY'.

The f*ck word is profanity; the c*nt word is profanity.

There may be one or two others at most that fall in line with being profane; the filter eliminates much more than that.

See Pete's comment on here as just one example.

If I get around to it, I'll start an official poll.

Guess I've never run in to it, so I assume it actually eliminates profanity since I don't use profanity. What words does it block that it shouldn't be blocking.

I do believe magically there no longer exists a 'profanity' filter...

I typed these 'words' at random simply to see which would make it past the 'filter'. On 'preview' they are all allowed. I guarantee you virtually none of these would be gotten in when all this began.

hell

Let's see if they all get 'saved' on the actual post (some of you may wish to avert your eyes, lol):

What is going on here?

understand. There appears to be nothing going on.

has been removed?

You suggested I post a poll, I posted a poll, the vast majority who voted so far think it's a bad idea. But if there's no filter currently in place I suppose the poll was moot.

So, I simply asked...what gives?

Don't you give me that holier than thou attitude Liedel. I know you and I know you aren't any better than the rest of the contributors here.

... should I have clarified that I don't use profanity when I'm posting during civil debate? I never said I was better than anyone, just that I prefer non-profane, civil debate.

And I know we've emailed on some topics, but I don't know who you are so I don't know how you can 'know' me. (Is that enough knowing for you?)

run into it either excluding when I post items that contain it.

WOW! I never thought I would say that!

But there are exceptions. Some 4-letter words I can understand prohibiting.

But sometimes, a legimate word that is said on TV daily, gets blocked.

For instance, "suckle up to the Government nipple" is blocked.

If ''CON' is the opposite of 'PRO', does that mean Congress is the opposite of Progress?

your "suckle up to the Government nipple" phrase is what started me on finding out just what is currently blocked with the filter...because when I typed the same phrase it was allowed. I agree with you, at one time I'm certain it would not have been (nipple and/or suckle would have been blocked).

So, I just began typing naughty words at random to see what was going on.

Looks like somebody might be playing games. I hope there's a logical expanation.

Being an Originalist (for those of you who do not know what an "Originalist" is, look here > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Originalism) I've been thinking about my previous comment and have decided to defer the decision to the "owner" of the site.

In this case, I feel that Swampbubbles is the property of Chris Myers, much like his home would be.

When I choose to visit Chris' home, I abide by his rules. That is his right to Personal Property.

My right to free speech under the 1st Amendment is trumped when I am in Chris' house.

My personal opinion is, I would prefer the profanity filter be relaxed a bit, but it is Chris' house so I will abide by Chris' rules.

If ''CON' is the opposite of 'PRO', does that mean Congress is the opposite of Progress?

so that commented on stories move to the top. Every other site I ever go to does this. It makes it so much easier then scrolling down and trying to see what topics have new comments. I know you have the recent comments on the right, but that only holds so many, and frankly, it's a pain. And, I vote to remove profanity filter as well.

I'm not posting anymore unless the filter is removed. I have lost more than one post due to the stupid filter... last time it wouldn't let me post the word "constitutional".

How about letting us cash our Bubble Points in for cash and prizes?

1. remove the profanity filter
2. set the site up so that the order of the posts can be changed, like Toledo Talk
3. simplify the site or provide a lite version of the site. There's too much junk floating around the page - compare this with Toledo Talk or Glass City, both of which are easier to use because the screen is free from clutter.

Another thought is to implement a system like the one found on SlashDot for modding posts up or down and a corresponding filter.
