Regardless of the President's decision

Regardless of whatever the President decides I did get some good news this week. I am going to Afghanistan. I begin predeployment training in about a month.

For those of you not familiar with my situation I have been in the military for almost 8 years now. I have been trying to deploy for almost all of that time but have been in several "non-deployable" statuses.

When I joined my current command my chances of deploying with the unit were slim as they just returned from Iraq in May. Thus, my only chance of deploying was as an Individual Augment (IA). I have now recently gotten that chance.

For those who would ask the question I've gotten several times "Why do you want to go?" I can only answer the best with a saying we've used quite a bit in the war on terror: Marines run to the sound of the guns.

The downside of this deployment will be I will possibly miss the birth of my first child. The dates of the deployment have fluctuated and depending on when the baby chooses to come will determine if I am a witness to the birth or not.

My wife is excited for me. This is a great opportunity for our family and our career. We knew missing births, birthdays, and anniversaries were a possibility when we decided I stay in. I believe my Master Sergeant put it best when discussing the possibility of missing the babies birth when he said "All the more reason to make another one."

I do intend to post to SB as much as I can. Just as many note that my opinions are my own and do not reflect the opinion of the military. I will continue to give an inside look to the military and my unique views for as long as they are relevant and to the interest of others. I will post anything that operational security will allow.

In my travels I will keep you and your families in my prayers and hope you would do for me as well.

Thank you for your service Mike....keep yer head down...

Good luck and stay safe, Mikey. My views differ from yours about this mess, but I hope you are o.k. there.

"Out of every ONE HUNDRED men, TEN should not be here, EIGHTY are nothing but targets, NINE are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they the battle make. Ah, but the ONE, ONE of them is a WARRIOR, and he will bring the others back." May the Lord watch over you.

Take Care MikeyA.
Thank you very much.

for what you do and are willing to do.

MikeyA - while you're away, are there are things we can do to help your family? Clean out gutters, shovel snow from driveways, that sort of thing? Please let me know - my email is on my blog....

Thank you Maggie but we should be well taken care of.

Also I am now stationed in California. My sister and brother in law (both Marines as well) have orders out here as well. My parents, the last of my family still living in NW Ohio, hope to retire this year. Needless to say they don't want to miss much of their first grandchild so I think my wife will have a great support system around her in my absence.

Plus, living on base is like living in a small town. We don't lock our doors, we wave to each other, and traffic stops for the kids. So if I am worried about anything it's that the dogs barking will wake the baby.... and earthquakes.

But I really do appreciate the offer.

Thank you for your service and stay safe.

that is too scary.

Best of luck and post when you can.

Everyone on here, even your liberal friends with whom you've had your online 'battles' with, wish you nothing but the best. You're a member of our 'community' here and a member of our 'family'.

I'll be hoping for your success and health and those of your family.

That does mean a lot to me McCask. I enjoy the company of many of my liberal friends on here despite the bickering.

Thank you for your service, your dedication, and your commitment to this country and its' freedom. My prayers are with you and your family.

Look forward to your inside views of the military

Wow Mikey! Thats a double whamy of news. Congratulations on your deployment and your first child! And THANK YOU!

Though I am saddened to hear that you will be away from your loved ones, and that you may miss the birth of your baby, I am proud to know you and hopeful that there are more like you who willingly will represent their country in battle.

I will keep you in my prayers, and will do my best to fight here on the homefront for the support that you will need to get the job done with efficiency and expedience.

I look forward to your dispatches.
