Opportunities Must Be Accessible That Prepare Youth For 21st Century Careers

Toledo, OH – Education is the foundation to our youth and unemployed adults in Toledo becoming productive and prosperous citizens.

When I think of the future of Toledo and economic development, I think of our youth. Youth are the key to Toledo's future. They will be responsible for the new ideas to keep Toledo competitive, and in order to move Toledo forward we must include our youth by giving them opportunities. Ensuring that our youth are able to engage in economic opportunities is imperative. Many of our urban youth need greater support in avoiding the “life traps” of dropping out of school, having babies too early, or getting involved in crime. In talking with many youth in Toledo; particularly in the inner-city, they have lost hope. We must rally behind our youth, give them hope, and inspire them not to give up on their dreams. However, it is hard for many youth to hope for the future, when all they see around them is poverty and defeat. I understand how they feel, as I was once in their situation. I believe that we can give our youth hope, and encourage them to dream again, by giving them opportunities and something to look forward to.”

When elected to City Council, I will work hard to push legislation that will wraparound our youth. I believe education is the key to economic development, and the city of Toledo must embrace our youth by partnering with all facets of education. In addition, we must continue to work hard to provide scholarship opportunities for all Toledo youth who would like to further their education. Lastly, we must make education accessible to our youth. I will work hard to see that Owens Community College establish a satellite campus in urban Toledo. In order to give our youth hope in Toledo, we must make opportunities accessible to them.”
