Cash For Clunkers

According to Chuck Shumer the Cash For Clunkers program is a "success". Here's raw video of what a huge success it is. These cars will be destroyed because the govt. says they need to go. They don't look like clunkers to me, how about you?

Chris Myers added the following, clunkers at a local car dealer.

I will post the photos I took of the "clunkers" parked at a local dealership. They are pretty much the same. These clunkers are better than some of my cars were.

I am getting the video removed error. Will it be reposted?

I don’t even know where to start on this Fred…Usually you walk the fine line between bullsh!t and facts, but you’re just being dishonest here.

First, you being “out raged” that the government is “forcing” dealerships to “scrap” the entire car is just wrong. It’s not the government doing it; it’s the call of the junk yard.

The government only requires that the engine be destroyed. NOTHING ELSE! When you dishonestly asked “why couldn’t they scrap the hood on that perfectly fine car?” – the answer is simple, “BECAUSE THE JUNK YARD DIDN’T WANT TO!”

From the Cash for Clunker rules –
http://www.cashforclunkersfacts.com/cash-for-clunkers-final-rule.pdf

State registration officials should pay special attention to this marking on a title because it indicates that the vehicle has been traded in under the CARS program with the understanding that it would never again be used as an automobile in this or any other country and is suitable only to be used for scrap or parts.

or

The dealer must agree to transfer the trade-in vehicle to a disposal facility that will crush or shred it so that it will never be returned to the road, although parts of the vehicle, other than the engine block and drive train (unless the drive train is sold in separate parts), may be sold prior to disposal.

I’m used to you mixing facts and your opinion, but what you’ve been spewing this morning is nothing but dishonest, shame on you Fred.

One last thing, the junk yard guy you have talking on the "news" at the top of an hour complaining that he could make $5K from the sale of the parts of the Mark IV, is an idiot. He can scrap it (other than the engine), so he’s just no idea what he’s doing, which is quite sad, but leave it to WSPD to find the dumbest guy out there and put him on the radio (present company excluded).

The "Dumbest Guy Out There" can be heard on WSPD between 3:00 to 6:00 every day!
I know Fred shameless promotion.

in either whole (minus engine) or parted out, all revenue generated should be returned to the government to offset some of the $4500.00 which was used for the C-F-C program. I would rather they just write the check out to me but know that wont happen. So my question then is..If the dealers are selling these vehicle to scrap yards for $100.00 (as I heard from a reliable source) who stand to make quite a bit on the recyclable materials, should the dealers be the beneficiary of the $100.00? Should not the dealers be required to refund it?

great research sensor g. thanks for the update. Of course the underlying problem of the whole program is ignored, which is why is the government paying for perfectly good cars to be taken off the road? But that's a minor point compared to the fact that a good running, newer model Lincoln can be sold for scrap parts. I'll correct myself on air tomorrow about the part situation. It won't change the fact that the government is spending money it doesn't have for a short term solution to an ongoing problem, and is creating more problems as a result.

Here's to the crazy ones, the rebels, the troublemakers, the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

"Of course the underlying problem of the whole program is ignored." Fred please expound on this. Explain your position. What is meant by, underlying problem?

Creating more problems? The program's been hugely successful.

And that's the "problem" that conservative have.

We spend $2 billion a week in Iraq and conservatives are ok with that, but spend $2 billion on Cash for Clunkers and they’re all pissy…

I'm complaining about it since it's yet another $2B/week that the government not only can't afford to spend, but that the government has no right to spend in the first place.

We're putting people back into the car-loan system. That's all this is doing. Meanwhile, Europeans tool around in 40mpg+ cars.

My reps haven't listened to me, EVER. I'm a fiscal conservative. I'm heavy out-voted in each and every election.

While I don't exactly agree I do understand why you feel the way you do. Especially when it comes to this statement "We're putting people back into the car-loan system. That's all this is doing. Meanwhile, Europeans tool around in 40mpg+ cars."

I wonder if a "pay off your car" program to help people get out from their revolving car loans would have helped even more.

Fred you didn't spend most of your show talking about the "underlying problem". You spent most of the show talking about the government forcing dealers to scrap entire cars; which you got wrong.

BTW I’ve heard about 100 commercials on WSPD this morning from dealer ships about the Cash for Clunkers… the trick down affect seems to be working for you guys anyway.

Lastly, Wagoner is not the representative from Toledo; he's the representative from Ottawa Hills.

I've heard that the mileage improvements will mean equate to annual savings of 3.8 million barrels of oil per year, and $1,000 savings/year per consumer.

The problem with this program is we have bought GM and Chrysler. However the cars most are buying under the CFC are "foreign-owned".

If the gov't was serious about helping GM and Chrysler turn around they would have made the CFC program for vehicles made by them and possibly even Ford.

The reason they didn't is the gov't isn't REALLY interested in having GM and Chrysler make money, only interested in taking care of the unions. Additionally they don't care if more "foreign cars" are bought because they get better gas mileage in whole so then the environmentalists are taken care of as well.

This program is less about helping the economy as it is more about propping up Dem fundraisers.

Don't get me wrong I am not totally against the program but it should have been only for the "American manufacturers" and should have been thought out better instead of the just knee jerk "let's do it" that's been the backbone of this congress.

'Cash for Clunkers' drives up US auto sales

"The popular "Cash for Clunkers" incentive helped kickstart the US auto market in July, with Ford leading the way by registering its first increase in sales for almost two years.

General Motors estimates that 5.5 million vehicles could qualify as trade-ins under the program

The incentive has helped release pent-up demand in the market and "came at a very good time to help boost the economy," said GM sales analyst Mike DiGiovanni, who estimated extra sales and production could boost third quarter GDP by 0.5 percentage points.

GM said it posted its highest US retail sales in 10 months, even as total sales fell 19.4 percent to 155,569 vehicles. Its market share fell to 18.8 percent from 20.4 percent in July 2008, according to Autodata.

Ford Motor Co. was the clear winner in July, posting its first monthly sales increase since November 2007 and seeing its share of the US market rise to 15.9 percent from 13.7 a year earlier.

"Cash for clunkers put us over the top," said George Pipas, Ford's manager of sales analysis."

You got it Pink. I made it all up.

Oh yeah http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090804/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_cash_for_clunkers_... Must be more of that "transparent gov't" we were promised.

MikeyA

Just pointing out that American auto makers ARE benefitting from the program.

Pink Slip

How do you know that most of the cares being bought are "foreigned owned"?

Please provide your data...

I did find this...
http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/08/03/clunkers.trade.ins/index.html
Ford, Dodge, Jeep and Chevrolet trucks and sport utility vehicles accounted for the top 10 vehicles being considered for trade-ins, according to the site. See what happens to the traded-in clunkers »

Several auto companies have reported that their fuel-efficient models were among the top sellers this month, and the White House reported Monday that cars being purchased under the program had an average fuel economy of 25.4 miles per gallon. That's compared with 15.8 mpg for the trade-ins.

The most popular car being purchased under the program, according to the White House? The Ford Focus, which boasts up to 35 mpg.

That's a lot less oil being, imported, refined and used. That's worth something to all of us.

All you've proven is that "American cars" are the ones mostly being turned in.

"The most popular car being purchased under the program, according to the White House? The Ford Focus, which boasts up to 35 mpg."

Really? Because all the data I've seen is that they're not sure which cars will actually end up getting the $$ because the program was so scatterbrained.

And from your article "The Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Honda Civic, Toyota Prius and Toyota Camry, all of which can get about 30 mpg or more. See the full list " and then when we click on the full list we get: Corolla, Civic, Prius, Camry, Elantra and Fit from "foreign owned" as compared to: Cobalt, Caliber, Focus, and Escape as "American owned".

So per your own article you linked, yes, I do think "foreign companies" are benefitting more because they have a bigger selection that fits the criteria.

I laugh at the liberal hipocracy. They wanted to buy-out GM and Chrysler because they could make them profitable yet they don't want to really do what WILL make them profitable.

MikeyA

It was reported that 47% of the 80,000 cars sold last weekend were built by Ford, GM, or Chrysler. Compare that to their combined market share of 45%.

"That's a lot less oil being, imported, refined and used. That's worth something to all of us."

True, it is, but it's still not worth picking my pockets for the next umpteen years via taxes to pay for it all.

Government spending is now acting outright as if it were a bottomless pit of money from which it can draw without care. If you can't see the disaster that looms from that, I can't really help you any further.

From the AP story;http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090804/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_cash_for_clunkers_transparency

LaHood, the program's chief salesman, has pitched the rebates as good for America, good for car buyers, good for the environment, good for the economy. But it's difficult to determine whether the administration is overselling the claim without seeing what's being sold, what's being traded in and where the cars are being sold.

LaHood, for example, promotes the fact that the Ford Focus so far is at the top of the list of new cars purchased under the program. But the limited information released so far shows most buyers are not picking Ford, Chrysler or General Motors vehicles, and six of the top 10 vehicles purchased are Honda, Toyota and Hyundai.

Here's to the crazy ones, the rebels, the troublemakers, the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

The top ten cars sold under the cash for clunkers program are as follows:

1. Ford Focus - Made in the USA
2. Honda Civic - Made in the USA
3. Toyota Corolla - Made in the USA
4. Toyota Prius - Made in Japan
5. Ford Escape - Made in the USA
6. Toyota Camry - Made in the USA
7. Dodge Caliber - Made in the USA
8. Hyundai Elantra - Made in South Korea
9. Honda Fit - Made in Japan
10. Chevy Cobalt - Made in the USA

Why did you remove the video Fred?

you will notice it is reposted sensor. the first one had a few seconds at the beginning of people waiting in line for osu-ut tix which was unrelated to the clunker story. the video was reposted yesterday, amazing that you missed it.
