A newspaper publishing the private e-mails of the SC Governor. I thought only bloggers did this, especially given the righteous lectures you heard in NW Ohio :)

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Just after South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford admitted to a yearlong extramarital affair, his state's largest newspaper posted online romantic, suggestive e-mails that it says were exchanged between the chief executive and his Argentinian lover.
The State of Columbia redacted the full name of the woman, identifying her only as "Maria," but their contents clearly show they were more than friends.

of his family- they are wonderful, he tosses them away. Lust is powerful, it can grab any of us.
it is a wonder how he got so out of control.
What? They sat on these since December. They're only coming to light because he got busted...
They couldn't verify them.
To publish them without corroboration would open them up to a lawsuit.

The media is going through quite a transformation. Lately, it seems, the press is a little more careful than they've been in the recent past about reporting some stories without a lot of confirmation. I'm not so sure that reporting so gingerly is a good thing.
The NYT (and likely a lot of other outlets) had evidence in the John Edwards tryst, too, and yet they didn't pursue it/sat on it. It could be fear of a lawsuit, or it could be that they want to really develop a story to its hilt--I did see an interview on The Early Show with a reporter from the SC STATE newspaper who broke the news that Sanford was in Argentina. The reporter claimed to have had this story since December. I think the good people of South Carolina deserved to know a lot sooner. So, perhaps in an attempt to be less sensationalistic and more responsible, the media appears to be allowing the behavior to continue unchecked.
If the general public had the info, we'd leak it to a neighbor over the back fence ...or we'd Twitter it, which is exactly what happened when Michael Jackson died. My teenager told me Michael Jackson died 20 minutes before CNN reported it. I told her she was wrong--my Internet feeds and tv told me that he simply had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. She insisted that her sources were correct.
Turns out TMZ really broke the story before any "respectable" news outlet? Strange days....
I heard that the male body only has enough blood supply to go to one end or the other - apparently, his brain lacked the blood.
I am amazed at how these wealthy, powerful men, are so willing to risk their families & careers for a fling on the side. Do they really think they're wives are so stupid they won't find out? I'm so glad his wife is not standing by his side for photo ops. Good for her.
I feel sorry for their kids - imagine seeing your dad in the news over things like this. How does he look his kids in the eye?
It sounds like his wife may not stay with him.
