Sobczak resigns

June 11, 2009

Dear Mr. Dendinger,

It is with a strong sense of optimism for Toledo's future that I tender my
resignation as President and an At-Large member of Toledo City Council.
This resignation takes effect following the City Council meeting on June 23.

During my three-and-a-half-years on City Council, I have sought to be a
voice for labor and to bring about a successful blending of the needs of my
fellow union brothers and sisters with the needs and wants of the city's
residents. I hope time will show this approach has been successful.

My duties on council along with my position as vice president of Teamsters
Local 20, at times, have been demanding. These dual demands have brought me
to a point where I know it is in the best interests of my union and my
family that I resign. I have worked tirelessly as a lifelong trade unionist,
and I do not want even the perception I am acting in any way to the contrary

I wish my fellow council members the very best. I have enjoyed working with
all of them, and I urge them to put aside personal differences and work for
what is best for Toledo.

Taking this action now provides a talented newcomer the opportunity to be
appointed to my seat and to learn how to meet the multiple responsibilities
that are part of a Toledo City Council member's life. My action also will
give a current council member the opportunity to lead council as president.

It is my firm belief that, despite the difficult times it faces, Toledo is a
city of the future. Once it is able to get past the current financial
problems, Toledo will move forward to re-establish itself as a leader in our
state. With the city's involvement in advanced energies and manufacturing,
its position as a transportation hub, the strides being made by The
University of Toledo and the city's other economic development partners and,
most of all, the quality of its people, I have no doubt Toledo will
flourish.

I am proud to be a lifelong Toledo resident and intend to continue working
for the city's future as a private citizen and union official.

Gerry, thank you for your assistance and the counsel you have provided me in
my duties as both a Councilman and President of Council.

Keep Strong for Toledo,

Mark Sobczak

President,

Toledo City Council

No votes yet

probably moving to the Burbs! Now only if we can get him to convince Carty to ride along.

think he'll run for mayor?

OR - maybe a better question, if Carty gets recalled now, then who gets to be mayor?

Carol Contrada wouldn't like the competition. Township libs are the lawyers. They don't mix well with union libs.

I wonder what he's up to. Will he run for mayor? Will he run for Lucas County Commish? Or does he really care about his union members, and is going to concentrate on them? I wonder when the next union election is coming up, maybe thats what he wants, the top spot at his union? Interesting, i think.

"I have sought to be a voice for labor and to bring about a successful blending of the needs of my fellow union brothers and sisters with the needs and wants of the city's residents."

A full 12.4% of Toledoans are "Union brothers and sisters" according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics! http://www.bls.gov/news.release/union2.nr0.htm

The other 87.6% of you non-Union morons can suck wind. You mean nothing. You are worthless. You can kiss his Union ass.

Now shut the hell up and stay home on voting day. You selfish non-union dead-weight scumbag producers need to cough up more cash to support that 12.4% of the Socialist elite. You WILL pay more for your "Cadilliac" garbage service so the Teamsters can retire on your dime. You WILL pay more payroll taxes to support the Union brothers and sisters who mow the lawn so that they can go to the doctor and get Viagra for FREE.

If ''CON' is the opposite of 'PRO', does that mean Congress is the opposite of Progress?

According to a caller at 3:23 on the Brian Wilson show there are formal charges being brougt against Sobczak by members of the Teamsters regarding derelistion of duty for votes on city council and for time spent on council instead of at the local. These charges may have some bearing on his stepping down to avoid being let go from his position at the union. The speaker is a union member.

Here's to the crazy ones, the rebels, the troublemakers, the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

A union is a special interest group. How could his votes not either be not in the best interest of the union if they're in the best interest of the rest of the people, and vice versa.

He should never have been on the council in the first place.

Sobczak, when asked by WSPD about the call, said he didn't want to discuss it, and it had nothing to do with his stepping down. Suuuuuuuurrrrrre

What did Toledo ever lead in this state at anything?
Maybe it's the quality of the drinking water. We have been told it's the best.

Well, Toledo leads the US as the worst city of its size to live in. If Toledo can keep the population up, Toledo will continue to lead in that category.

I don't know if Toledo Public Schools leads Ohio in the most students who failed to graduate, but it's possible. I'd check, but apathy prevents me.

Where is the highest rate of unemployment in Ohio? I think Toledo leads in unemployment and possibly mortgage foreclosures.

Toledo is probably number one in the number of psychotic people in local government office.

And, I just remembered, that Toledo is number one in the number of underage prostitutes ever found in one city at the same time.

That's all I can think of.

What did Toledo ever lead in this state at anything?

According to The Blade and a University of Toledo researcher, aren't we the nation's capital in teen prostitution--we're like Little Bangkok!

We might not lead in unemployment, but we are doing
our darndest to push ahead.

We lead the state in the number Trivial Pursuit questions referring to our mayor.

Whoops! I'd better READ all the posts before I spout off...

While this might look as if I plagiarized Madjack's wise response to Brian in Vero Beach's query, I did not. I did leap before I looked.

If I may paraphrase Mr. Colton – and who is to gainsay me? – plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery. I thank you and raise my morning whiskey glass to you, Madam.

You remember him? The liberal democrat that has an "R" aafter his name? The one who was termed out?

Former District 2 Councilman Rob Ludeman told Toledo Free Press on June 11 that he is seeking an at-large seat on Toledo City Council. He plans to take out petitions June 12.

The theme will be “Bring Back Common Sense to Toledo City Council,” the Republican said.

“This timing has nothing to do with Mark Sobczak’s decision to resign, which surprised me this morning,” Ludeman stated in a message to Toledo Free Press.

Ludeman went on to say during a phone interview that he is running at-large because he would have had to wait two more years to run for a district seat.

“I was term-limited out,” he said. “I had to leave by city charter. I think council has had a void in leadership.”

when I realized that I had posted to the wrong thread the posters on this thread were just not important enough to me to say that I had made a mistake. If I had an ounce of respect for your comments, I would have posted that I had made a mistake. I figured that I would just leave it and let you intelligent people figure it out and ignore it or not figure it out and resort to what you do best, call me names. :)

please show me where this has happened a "few times over the years."

you must have me confused with someone else, you know what they say, we all post alike.

Childen, children, let's be nice to each other!
