WARD CELEBRATES COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION

WARD CELEBRATES COMMUNITY AND COLLABORATION
Old West End Festival, Point Place Days, North End Neighborhood Fest, and the OLPH Festival

Toledo, OH – It is important for the leaders of Toledo to be involved within the community and be willing to collaborate with each other. One of the problems currently within city government is that there is a disconnect of communication and collaboration among the constituents. This same pattern has carried over into campaigning, in which you have some candidates who won't even speak with each other. Toledo deserves better!

Ward asserts, “For too long our political leaders have played on our fears and exploited our differences for their own personal and partisan gain. Change and action are paramount to the future of our City. We must create a community for all people, and this requires a Servant Leadership approach to government. The greatest leader forgets himself, and attends to the development of others. Therefore, in the spirit of servanthood and selflessness...I will be supporting and promoting Darlene Fisher by walking with her and the supporters in the Old West End parade.”

Stephen Ward also looks forward to listening to, and talking with many citizens about their concerns and learning more about how he can serve them. He will be present at several festivals tomorrow.

This Saturday, June 6, Ward will be in the Old West End Festival parade starting at 10 am, at noon he will be at the North End Neighborhood Fest, at 2 pm he will be at Point Place Days, and at 4 pm he will be at the OLPH Festival.

We must create a community for all people, and this requires a Servant Leadership approach to government.

I thought I heard this statement or something similar from another candidate so I decided to look back and see if I could locate the source.

From David Washington of Teamwork Toledo...

He deeply believes in the traditional meaning of the term “public servant” and hopes to restore that meaning to Toledo City Council.

Is Stephen thinking for himself or scooping talking points from another? Just wondering.

KrazyKat...

Your statement is really no different than the post of Mr. Watson entitled, "All City Council Candidates Sound Like Teamwork Toledo."

You may view it here: http://swampbubbles.com/blogs/mwatson09/20090607/all-city-council-candid...

Teamwork Toledo is not the only people who have campaigned on lowering taxes, getting rid of fees and being business friendly.

I don't know why Mr. Watson, or any of the Teamwork Toledo candidates would think that.

Also KraZyKat I did some fact checking and this is what I found:

David "Prez" Washington along with the other 5 individuals of Teamwork Toledo announced their candidacy for city council at International Park on Monday, May 18 at 3 pm.

You may view their press release here:

http://glasscityjungle.com/wordpress/?p=7284

And the story on Fox News here:

http://www.foxtoledo.com/dpp/mobile/wupw_Teamwork_Toledo_makes_run_at_co...

In addition, I checked sources to see when Stephen Ward announced his candidacy.

I found that, Mr. Ward announced his candidacy for city council at Salem Lutheran Church on Thursday, April 30 at 10 am. In addition, he sent out the press release on April 24. In his press release as well as in his candidacy announcement speech, he talked about taking a "Servant Leadership" approach to government.

You may also view more here:

http://www.thetruthtoledo.com/story/2009/050609/Ward.htm

I also did fact checking to see when Mr. Ward released his campaign website, and I found that Stephen Ward's website was released on May 1.

You may view that source here:

http://glasscityjungle.com/wordpress/?p=7009

I also found the transcript of his candidacy speech that he made back on April 30 here:

http://www.wardfortoledo.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/candida...

Mr. Ward was also interviewed on WSPD on April 28.

So KraZyKat...

I must correct you. The facts are clear. VERY CLEAR!

The facts state that David "Prez" Washington from Teamwork Toledo, may be getting his talking points from the website of Stephen Ward!

Let's review a summary of the facts.

1) Stephen Ward announced his candidacy and his "Servant Leadership" approach to government on Thursday, April 30 at 10 am. While David "Prez" Washington made his campaign announcement with Teamwork Toledo on Monday, May 18 at 3 pm. So that is a point for Ward!

2) Stephen Ward released his campaign website www.WardforToledo.com on May 1. I did a "who is" domain search on David "Prez" Washington's website, and I found that his website was created on May 13.

You may view that search here:

http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/prezforcouncil.org

So once again, that is another point for Ward!

So you see KraZyKat don't believe the hype of David "Prez" Washington or Teamwork Toledo.

Stephen Ward announced his city council candidacy before them, he announced his "Servant Leadership" approach to government before them, he also announced that he was running as an Independent before them!

In addition, looking at all the council candidates...

Stephen Ward is the ONLY candidate who is running a 'no monetary donation' campaign. As well as he is the ONLY candidate who pledged to willingly donate 20% of his council salary back to the city to help with the current budget deficit.

You may view it on his website here:

www.WardforToledo.com

He clearly states, "It's time for the citizens of Toledo to be heard. We must create a community for all people, and this requires a Servant Leadership approach to government. While I am a lifelong Democrat, I will run as an Independent. The challenges facing Toledo effects everyone regardless of race, gender, social status, or political affiliation. At the end of the day what matters most, is working and making decisions...decisions not of my own or a political party, but that of the citizens of Toledo. No longer can important decisions be made with too little input from the citizens who will be affected by those decisions. The greatest leader forgets himself, and attends to the development of others."

And he also states this, "In these tough and uncertain economic times, it is time to put aside our differences and fight for change. Fight for opportunities. Fight for jobs. Fight for a better future for our children. We can no longer push agendas of special interest groups at the expense of our citizens. We must realize that regardless of race, gender, or social status...democrat or republican, A-team or B-team; we must take action now, take action together to make a difference."

"I promise you that during my campaign, I will listen to the hearts of the citizens of Toledo, and do what is best for the city and those that reside in Toledo."

"I am sensitive to the fact that we are living in a time of famine in which there are some residents who are only a paycheck away from being homeless."

"Therefore, I promise you that I will run a 'no monetary donation' campaign. That's right! I pledge to you that I will not take money from special interest groups or the citizens of Toledo. For so long that has been the normal practice in politics. But, I am not a politician...I am an advocate for change! An advocate for the people! After all, I dwell among the people!"

"Furthermore, in addition to running a 'no monetary donation' campaign, I promise you that when you elect me to City Council, I will willingly take a 20% pay cut by donating that portion of the salary back to the city to help with the financial crisis that Toledo is in. I believe that city leaders should lead! "

"It is not fair to lay off city employees and cut salaries, if the city leaders won't first take pay cuts. Therefore, I challenge my fellow council candidates to also lead by example, by joining myself in donating 20% of their council salary back to the city if elected."

"Lastly, I bring an independence that will not be compromised! An independence that will allow me to be a voice for all people, and not special interest groups. An independence that will allow us to take action now, take action together for all people!"

So KraZyKat...looking at how Stephen Ward is running his campaign, I must say that he is definetely taking a "Servant Leadership" approach!

Based on the facts...it appears that David "Prez" Washington of Teamwork Toledo is mimicking the campaign platform of Council Candidate Stephen Ward!

However, one thing David "Prez" Washington forgot was to:

1) run a 'no monetary donation' campaign like Stephen Ward

and...

2) pledge to donate 20% of his council salary back to the city to help with the budget deficit, like Stephen Ward

There use to be a time when all the kids wanted to be "Like Mike," referring to Michael Jordan.

Well KraZyKat....

In this case, based on the facts, we can say...

"Like Ward!"

David "Prez" Washington of Teamwork Toledo wants to run his campaign like Stephen Ward!

The last thing we need is someone in office who cannot think for themselves...

Why settle for a replica, when you can have the original!

When it comes to the city council candidates, and the "Servant Leadership" approach to government...

The facts point to Stephen Ward as being the original!

We need someone who can think for themselves on city council. Someone who not only gives "lip service," but someone who truly knows what it means to be a "Servant."

Stephen Ward has proven that he is a true servant that cares for all people, and he cares for Toledo.

Rebekah,

You are well versed and very knowledgeable about Mr. Ward. I had the opportunity to talk to him and I believe that he really does have a servant heart. I also know that David has a servants heart. God does give one gift to more than just one person.

Have you had the chance to talk to David? I know that he would love to talk to any constituents that have questions. Mr. Washington is not concerned with originality. If I am correct, Mr. Ward is a God fearing man just as Mr. Washington is. The term "public service" is just a term that naturally flows out of the mouth of a man who has been called to that instead of a person called to serve food at the missions. The fact that both men have been called to serve the public does not mean they necessarily "cant think for themselves" as you put it.

This is a political race to serve the public, not to see who could create the website faster, who could get the first press conference standing next to a family with a lawsuit against the cops, and it sure is not to see who can use the term "public service" first. While I still do have respect for Mr. Stephen Ward and appreciate what he has to offer, this "he said this first" and "this candidate can't think for themselves" banter is not useful. If you haven't noticed, there is a bigger problem here. Toledo is in the hole by tens of millions, the cops are more short handed than what they were, and Carty felt it was ok to build an arena that is not funded well, spent over $125,000 on the Erie Street Market that is busy maybe 3 times a year, and STILL has done nothing to the Marina District.

Area issues seem to be a little more important than who got the website up first.

Jennamato...

Perhaps you should have directed your statement to KraZyKat.

KraZyKat posted this:

"We must create a community for all people, and this requires a Servant Leadership approach to government."

"I thought I heard this statement or something similar from another candidate so I decided to look back and see if I could locate the source."

"From David Washington of Teamwork Toledo...
He deeply believes in the traditional meaning of the term “public servant” and hopes to restore that meaning to Toledo City Council."

"Is Stephen thinking for himself or scooping talking points from another? Just wondering."

Jennamato...

I would have never posted the facts about both David "Prez" Washington and Stephen Ward had not KraZyKat put the posts up trying to imply that Stephen was copying off of Prez.

I simply posted the facts, to let KraZyKat know that her assumptions were wrong.

This is not the first time that someone from the Teamwork Toledo camp, tried to imply that other candidates are copying off of Teamwork Toledo.

In fact, in another posts on this blog...another member of Teamwork Toledo, Michael Watson... did that. And then once people called him out on it, he went and changed his posts! He tried to say that all the other candidates that talked about lower taxes, business friendly etc., were trying to be like Teamwork Toledo. THAT'S CRAZY!

You can view it here:

http://swampbubbles.com/blogs/mwatson09/20090607/teamwork-toledo

simply posted the facts, to let KraZyKat know that her assumptions were wrong.

Which is why I posted the suspicion as a question...not an assumption of facts. I was purposely looking for discussion on the topic. Also, while I do support Teamwork Toledo and find their course for Fiscal Conservatism intriguing, I would not say that I am officially in " ...the Teamwork Toledo camp" . Be careful with those assumptions as well.

Speaking of assumptions, this KraZykat is not a female. This point has been made many times as any regular Swampbubbler can attest to. I am a Tom KraZyKat or as the Stray Cats make claim...

"Stray cat strut, I'm a ladies' cat,
A feline Casanova, hey man, thats where its at
Get a shoe thrown at me from a mean old man
Get my dinner from a garbage can "

If man has no tea in him, he is incapable of understanding truth. ~Japanese Proverb

The truly interesting part of this thread is : Why do people asume KrazyKat is a female?

Inquiring minds want to know...

I do know who I posted to. I did respond to your post Rebekah. You were the one presuming that Mr. Washington was not being original with his platform. I think that the people running for office see so much they could run on but when asking the citizens the same things pop up time and time again. All of Toledo is concerned with taxes, being a business friendly environment, and giving the government back to the people. That is also what Mr. Ward is running on.

I don't know what Mr. Watson posted, what I do know is that everyone, candidates and citizens, are tired of the way this re-elected government handles things. Time and time again the city of Toledo's leaders have been given the opportunity to do better for the city. They have let the city down and it's time that the citizens stop giving the current council chances to prove themselves.
