The Trevor Casey Story

Here's the rest of the Trevor Casey story. It seems that I was only partially right - 14 year old Trevor decided to get high on pot and run his smart mouth to the Toledo Police, with predictable results. Here's the link to the story in the Toledo Blade:

http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090519/NEWS02/905190...

You know, I'm not a big fan of the Toledo Police, but so far I can't fault them for this one. Trevor got what he deserved, and the real crime is that the city will have to defend itself against a frivolous lawsuit.

PRESS STATEMENT

May 20, 2009

In speaking with David Casey, a brother of Trevor Casey; David states, “Trevor underwent a series of test, and was seen by an ophthalmologist who had to come in from Bowling Green. Trevor was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. He has loss of vision in his left eye, as well as blood clots in his eyes.”

David Casey also says, “The ophthalmologist stated that in examining Trevor, the findings show that during the incident, Trevor's eyeballs were looking down, which indicates that the officers may have been hitting him from behind.”

Lastly, David Casey asserts, “While my sisters were outside of St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center...one of the Toledo Police Officers involved in the incident, Officer Byron Daniels, drove up. He was in a marked police vehicle and in uniform. He got out of the vehicle, taunted my Aunt Penny Woodard and my brother Christopher Casey, and then got back into the squad car and drove off. One would think that considering the situation at hand, Officer Byron Daniels would have respect for the family during this time.”

Chris Rock's "How not to get your ass beat by the Police"

An oldie, but a goodie...

Agreed that stoned teenagers who taunt the police and dance in front of them are more than likely going to wind up with an adjustment in attitude by physical means, Billy.

While I do not condone violence by cops (if indeed it turns out that excessive force was used), neither do I recommend being confrontational or idiotic around them. You may be within your rights to hose down an active hornet nest, but do not act surprised when you get stung.

I'm shocked....shocked I say....

Here is the aforementioned Chris Rock public service announcement entitled "How Not to Get Your Ass Kicked by the Police." I forgot how funny this was:

That about sums it up

Dottie

make it about anything other than the fact that two police officers assaulted a 14 year old child who is currently back in the hospital after being admitted this afternoon. Sarah, History?Mike, Fred and Brianwhoever, wherever, you are classic Toledo and that is why your city is on the news again.

Tyree didn't try to kill anyone, he is helping a family whose 14 year old son was nearly killed by two officers of the law. Why are you researching Tyree's information ? Isn't that a bit of overkill? Is anyone really interested in Tyree Page or Twila Page? If so why?
Because you are small minded and stupid.

You'll change your tune when your daughter wants to date this "child" or one of his homies....LMAO...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

LOL

He's not a child. He's a criminal now.

"Is anyone really interested in Tyree Page or Twila Page? If so why?
Because you are small minded and stupid."

I am interested because I want to see what the child of an ignorant person such as yourself does for a living.

MikeyA

He wasn't admitted. He was seen in the ER and released.
This is according to 13ABC just now.

This kid obviously pulled some stupid ass stunt to get his smack down. I really doubt that the cops were just cruising by and thought to themselves "Hey its been a quiet day, lets go smack that kid around for shits and giggles".

A case like this could represent a lawsuit with a very high payout. The photos of Trevor Casey's face alone could move a jury to tears. If indeed the police used excessive force, you can bet there will be no shortage of lawyers, publicity specialists, and other tangential persons to offer their services.

Yes, lots of money.

And, of course, there are those who make the most of a case like this just to get their names out in front of the public. Oh, these folks embrace the cause with the enthusiasm of an ecstatic pentecostal, but among their goals lurks the specter of self-promotion.

If I were Trevor Casey's parents, I would be wary of the crowds of people offering their services. Big-money cases attract plenty of characters with diverse agendas, not all of whom have the best interest of the client.

I saw the news footage interviews with the family and they seemed to be truly shaken--it did not seem that their response to the incident was contrived. I am sure that their first reaction to that video--seeing blood and seeing the boy fall limp when released--was that the boy did not deserve that sort of treatment AND that justice should be served...sums up the mantra of anyone who believes that they were mistreated...seek revenge via lawsuit to make it right.

Understanding who Tyree is can be an important part of understanding what is going on. Why would this family seek the help of this person? Who is he and what are his possible motives?

This is why History Mike's research is helpful. I think he would have looked it up even if he didn't know who his mom is. If this case goes any further, I am sure that the local media will be dredging up anything they can find on Tyree, too..

I also don't give a rip about the Pages, Stephen Ward, whomever...they're part of the usual flotsam and jetsam that surface around the edges of circumstances like this and it's interesting already the thrust of the comversation on here is about them, not what may/may not have happened last Friday.

It's all true--we don't know all the facts and the video doesn't tell the complete story. I completely understand and agree with that.

But, sorry...I'm looking at two very large guys, adults, supposedly well-trained law enforcement officers, dealing with a unarmed, skinny, 14-year-old and I'm seeing chokeholds, hand-over-mouth, a fair amount of blood, and the kid eventually dropping like a stone to the ground when released.

OK, maybe the kid turned into Bruce Lee before the video crew showed up on the scene and the officers had to deal with a situation getting out of control. Possible, yes. Am I skeptical? Ummm...yeah.

Blade story--

According to a police report, the incident began when the junior high school student stopped in front of a police patrol car and "did a dance" at the Brand Whitlock Homes of the Lucas Metropolitan Housing Authority, near Collingwood Boulevard and Belmont Avenue. A few minutes later he was seen on the steps of 175 Brand Whitlock Homes with three other males.
Police asked if any of them lived there, and when none spoke up, officers told them to disperse. The other three left, but young Casey refused, while "talking and doing a dance."

So, the stupid--also apparently high--kid does a 'dance' in front of a police car and a few minutes later he just happens to be 'seen on the steps' of a residence of Brand Whitlock. And from there, it all escalates into what eventually happened. Okey, dokey.

Well, let's see what plays out. I'm hoping somebody had to see something about what took place before the camera showed up at the scene and that person/persons' testimony will honestly portray the events leading up to the time the vid cam showed up.

I have a hard time seeing how these two police officers could not quickly subdue Trevor Casey with less physical means. Even if he did strike an officer in the chest, chances are that officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest.

What I really want to see is the patrol car dash-cam, which should catch some of the dance and taunting that supposedly happened. Of course, TPD is following starndard procedure, which is to complete an investigation before releasing any video. I also read an account that TPD is interviewing up to 30 people who saw all or part of what happened.

Finally, the fact that Chief Mike Navarre gave these two officers an unequivocal endorsement ("outstanding officers with excellent reputations in the community") at the press conference tells me something: I suspect that from the preliminary information there is a lack of evidence of blatant misconduct. Otherwise, Navarre would have been using stronger language to condemn the actions, or his support would not have been so glowing.

On an semi-related note: with the national publicity this case has generated, feeds from this and other SB posts are showing up on sites like CNN and USA Today. I already received an email from a radio producer who thinks I know something about the case. I don't know jack-s**t, so don't waste your time emailing me. Contact the family's publicist, lawyer, or clerical spokespersons for info. They are easy to find: just look for the microphones.

"I don't know jack-s**t, "

I concur.

Yes sir. I added the second part two minutes after I posted the first, and I also corrected a typo. You are quite observant, though you seem to be a bit overly focused on me. I suggest that you find more constructive ways to spend your time.

*ace ventura voice*..Oh really?...

I'm also observant to notice your change of tactics from insults to use of the term "sir"...lmao...

I mean...really..how dare I respond to your posts on a public form....

That brings a mental picture of the old guy down the street shaking his fist and yelling at kids "GET OFF MY LAWN INTERNET"...

Well bud...I'm not a kid in your classroom...I cant be escorted off campus by security for daring to openly mock you....

Your only hope is to ignore me...

Do you have anything to contribute to this discussion, or are you just here to troll and stalk? I long since left the thread where I called you out for your misinformed use of the term "ebonics" to insult the young woman in the Trevor Casey video.

As far as my classroom discussions: never had to kick a student out, and I doubt I ever will. You can read online what my former students have had to say about me.

Rather than take ignorant pot-shots about someone whose classroom you have never seen, you are welcome to sit in on any of my lectures. Check the catalogs of local colleges and universities to find one that suits you: I teach at five different places, and I welcome intelligent debate.

I fail to understand your bizarre obsession with my private life or my teaching. At no point did I ever criticize your work in the construction industry or cast aspersions on your you and your family: I merely criticized your ill-informed attempt to attack the woman in the video by referencing her speech with the word "ebonics."

Sir.

LMAO...you just cant do it...you cant ignore me...

And I find it hillarious....you are powerless in the face of pavlovian bells...

Your long winded posts in reply to a single word were full of assumtions , fallacies,,ad hominems, strawmen...

You assumed "ebonics" was an "attack" in the first place...assumed how I talk even though you've never heard me speak...insulted my intelligence...mistook a typo for a hidden joke...you voluntarily shared your life details and profession as a tool to impress and impune.....the list goes on...

You sure like to dish it out...but you clearly cant take it....

You dont want debate...you want people to nod in agreement .."cuz u a wizard of smart"...and when they dont..they get both barrels...

Too bad...welcome to the internet.

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

Sounds like an ego problem on your part: "you can't ignore me."

I made an honest effort to bury the hatchet, so any continued instigation just reflects on you.

Sir.

Signing off from further conversation with you until (or if) you decide to engage in intelligent debate. Good day.

BUWHAHAHAHA!

You only seek to bury the hatchet in my virtual skull...and when that didnt work?

I said GOOD DAY!

seen that movie too...

Now I'm supossed to get out of your office...

Aint gonna happen....

*rubs hands*

This just gets better and better..

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

"I have a hard time seeing how these two police officers could not quickly subdue Trevor Casey with less physical means."

This is irrelevant if they are techniques taught, and used throughout the police force to be used in similar situations.

"Even if he did strike an officer in the chest, chances are that officer was wearing a bullet-proof vest."

Ok there are two points to this. First, striking an officer is striking an officer. It does not matter the chances of harm the facts go to intent to do harm. Second, if they were wearing bullet proof vests (they probably were) then the size of the officers compared to the criminal are much more comparable. In my own life I've worn similar vests and they can make a small man seem big and intimidating.

MikeyA

Agreed that striking an officer - regardless of any harm that officer received - will likely be interpreted as asault, MikeyA. Good point.

I also mentioned the vest implicitly to counter the "big and fat" comments about the officers. IMHO, taking the vests into consideration, these officers looked more like linebackers than doughnut-scarfing stereotypes.

Interpreted?

It is assault...period....no interpretation required for people with common sence.....

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

What may be perceived as striking an officer might also be perceived by someone else as self-defense or inadvertant contact, Zeitgeist. It is also "interpreted" in the sense that the arresting officers, the command officers, and the prosecutor's office make informed decisions about intent.

Even if there was a video of the earlier part of the incident, different people will interpret the video different ways. As an example, many clear-headed people came to different conclusions about the cell phone video of the second half of Trevor Casey's arrest.

I hope that I cleared that up for you, sir.

"Some ideas are so preposterous that only an intellectual could believe them."...Orwell

I wondered about the police dash cam and then put it out of my mind. I believe it either doesn't show much of anything, or it wasn't turned on. I don't know if all TPD cars have a dash cam - do they?

Nor do I think a successful lawsuit would result in much of a penalty. A few thousand at most to cover any medical expenses.

I'm waiting to see how the politicos, social and religious leaders manage to turn this to their advantage. Where's Al Sharpton when you need him?

See above, I've inserted myself into this quaqmire, against my own advice to myself.

Somehow I already regret it.

I could have told you that would happen, had you asked. But as usual, you seem to know it all...

“Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.”

I didn't say anything negative about your son.

Yes, I was curious whether that was your son, but not in a negative way. You're very active in the community, and I thought it was interesting that he was taking on an activist role in this situation as well. If anything, I would think that was a positive - your son must have learned to take an interest in the community from you/your family.

(And I've not posted one negative thing about Trevor Casey here either. Nor have I defended the police officers. I would rather wait until more facts are available about the entire situation.)

Agreed, Sarah: all you did was ask a simple question. Unfortunately some folks do not like when questions get asked, and those afraid of the light of scrutiny sometimes lash out in anger at anyone within reach.

In this case, you.

However, getting back to the point, there are separate issues here: Trevor Casey's alleged beating at the hands of police, and the throng of people who come out of the woodwork in a case like this. If people like Tyree Page, Lafe Tolliver, and Stephen Ward are afraid of public scrutiny, then they ought to stay at home and not inject themselves into controversies.

what I am amazed at is how calm the officers remained despite a growing crowd that was not sympathetic to them.

They should be commended for a job well done.

MikeyA

I know I'm not interested in Tyree Page. I was merely pointing out that he was shilling interviews for the family which Lafe Tolliver says they aren't doing.

Any statement I make is the opinion of me exercising my first amendment right to freedom of speech. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and is generally permitted.

of a long drawn out lawsuit just waiting for a settlement to pay the bills for so many opportunists...

LOL

Too funny:

14 year old son was nearly killed by two officers of the law.

Nearly killed?? Seriously?? I do belive I'd call that stretch of truth another example of revisionist history from swampbubbles resident liar in cheif!!
