Toledo, OH- In the “My View” article published in this week's edition of the Sojourner Truth Newspaper, former Toledo Mayor Jack Ford endorses Independent City Council At-Large Candidate Stephen Ward.
Mr. Ford writes in his weekly column, “Stephen Ward will get one of my votes for Toledo City Council. Ward walks what he talks. He probably has no shot since he is not accepting campaign contributions but he will at least have one vote from precinct 13L – mine.”
For so long it has been said that politics is nothing more than a popularity contest, or who has or can raise the most money.
Ward states, “well by those standards...I don't have a chance. We the citizens of Toledo don't have a chance. By that definition of having to be popular or having to have an enormous amount of money...the only people who will get into office are the career politicians. And the only thing they represent are, special interest groups.”
We must reconsider our definitions. We must vote not based on popularity, but by the quality of the service and the willingness to serve all people.
Ward asserts, “I welcome and accept the endorsement of our former Mayor Jack Ford. I realize that I am facing an uphill climb in this city council race. Nevertheless, I will not be swayed or discouraged by what the polls may say. I realize that I may be the underdog in the eyes of many. However, I will not falter in my decision to run a no monetary donation campaign. I believe that we must redefine politics. I may not have many campaign signs, and I may not have the oratorical prowess of my constituents. But what I do have, I give unto you. I give you my willingness to listen and make decisions for the betterment of all people in Toledo. Make no mistake about it...no campaign, no politician, will out work me when it comes to the future of our families and our children.”
