Air Force One Photo-Op

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A White House official apologized Monday after a low-flying Boeing 747 spotted above the Manhattan skyline frightened workers and residents into evacuating buildings. Witnesses reported seeing the plane circle over the Upper New York Bay near the Statue of Liberty. The huge aircraft, which functions as Air Force One when the president is aboard, was taking part in a classified, government-sanctioned photo shoot, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

I wonder how much money was spent on fuel for the 747 and the two F-16 fighter escorts so the President could have a new photo of his jet airplane. This coming on the heels of auto-execs being ridiculed for flying in private jets to attend congressional hearings. At least those flights had a purpose and not just posing for for a picture. It will be interesting to see how this fits into the Stimulus Bill.

I don't care how profusely the POTUS may apologize for this incident. It was wrong on so many levels, Wasting Taxpayers Money and Creating Public Panic for two.

Hypocritical in my opinion.

Next thing you'll know he'll be stuffing his pants and landing a figher jet on an air craft carrier with a banner reading 'mission accomplished'.

NO

the "Mission Accomplished" will come when we are flying the flag of the USSA, driving government mandated cars, banking at Nationalized banks, going to government provided doctors and hospitals, living off meager government subsidies in our retirements, paying for someone else's pension while they collect a free ride, live in government own housing, dispose of innocent unborn babies like yesterdays newspaper and see Obama statues in the town centers of every city in America. Shouldn't be long now!

'The director of the White House Military Office, Louis Caldera, said he had approved today’s flight and would take responsibility for “any distress” it caused.'

'An administration official characterized President Barack Obama as also being furious when he heard about the incident and the confusion it caused'.

Blaming POTUS for this is one of the bigger stretches of all time and your 'we'll all being living as Socialists' rant is ridiculous

And no, Bush evidently didn't approve the 'Mission Accomplished' banner referred to earlier; however, he obviously did go along with the whole silly-ass photo-op, complete with the manly crotch-stuffing (too funny, Sensor) , that symbolizes the utter futility of most endeavors that administration undertook.

this guy (Caldera) should be fired, and if Obama doesn't do that he should be rightfully criticized. The whole thing was stupid-beyond-stupid.

As Commander in Chief of the Air Force it was his responsibility to know. The fact that he didn't raises bigger concerns for me. He does not have control of the troops and may be unqualified to be the lead of our military.

If man has no tea in him, he is incapable of understanding truth. ~Japanese Proverb

now, based on this incident, he 'doesn't have control of the troops' (I hear they're gathering at the Mexico border on their own to invade over the swine flu situation) and 'may (nice qualifier) be unqualified to lead the military.'

This was a photo shoot, not a military exercise. The more I read about it:

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/air-force-one-backup-rattle...

the more it's obvious more than one person (Caldera) may be to blame:

'Jim Peters, an F.A.A. spokesman, said “the photo op was approved and coordinated with everyone.” Notification was made in advance to the mayor’s office, “including its 911 and 311 operation centers,” the New York City Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, the United States Park Police and other agencies, he said'.

The problem was nobody knowing how low the planes would be and the panic that would cause.

You guys need another Tea Party to get together and re-group.

This was a photo shoot, not a military exercise.NOT!

From the very article you cited I quote...
The 30-minute sortie, from about 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., was a “normally scheduled training mission” coordinated with the White House and the New York office of the FAA, Air Force spokeswoman Vicki Stein said from the Pentagon.

I believe that Training Mission = Military Exercise

Whatever you want to call it---training mission, photo-op or some combination of both--

"White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said yesterday’s flyover was “two training missions that became in the end a picture mission” and only Air Force personnel were aboard.'

it's clear Obama didn't know the particulars ahead of time, it cost $328,000 in taxpayer money not counting burden on NYC 911-services, the public should have been pre-informed, and IMO Caldera should lose his job.

Your stretching this into something far beyond what it really is when you talk about 'losing control of armed forces' and being 'unqualified' to lead our military.

Obama knows how to fly a fighter jet? Incredible what community organizers can do nowadays.

He learned to fly while in the Hawaiian Nation Guard when his dad pulled all sorts of strings so he wouldn't have to go to Vietnam.

His dad? His birth father who he never really knew or his stepfather from Indonesia?

The Vietnam war ended when Obama was 13. No wonder his dad didn't want him to go there.

Other than that, congrats on a brilliant, witty comparison.

Did you know Bush choked on a pretzel? Oh, and he likes torture, strategery, and clearing brush in Texas. What a maroon.

It was a joke...wow conservatives have no sense of humor.

obviously, someone didn't think this idea through enough.

Nothing surprises me anymore. There was a story a couple of weeks ago about 0bama having some "pizza chef" flown into D.C. from St Louis to make pizza for a luncheon. It's easy spending other peoples money.

Leave it to wingnuts to purposely fuck up a story to make a lousy point. The pizza chef was already flying to DC (the restaurant paid), the chef donated his time, and Obama paid for the ingredients himself. (and now back to our regularly-scheduled fake outrage)

Pink Slip

Hey Pink Slit,
Mind citing a source? I call BS.
A quick Google comes up with a bunch of links to the story, but I haven't found one that claims the chef was already flying to DC or his donating his time.
Was that the cover story they came up with after so many people got pissed?

JeepMaker, you should seriously brush up on your "skills". (you know, with the job market & all)

Okay, buzzing the Statue of Liberty in a 747 with an F-16 escort is not a great idea. A bunch of New York city residents got scared and Mayor Bloviator sputtered around in public like the over filled douche bag that he is.

Now can we all get back to work?

Mad Jack

I can't believe the White House hasn't heard of Photoshop. It's not that hard to cut and paste Air Force One into a picture of the Statue of Liberty. I do it all the time...

....use Photoshop that is...not paste Air Force One into a picture of the Statue of Liberty...

You know, AH, you might have been joking, but that is a nice point. Why didn't they just create an image? A little project like that could have been passed along to practically anyone.

So Pink Slit, you post one link from admitted left leaning Tommy Christopher and somehow thats more credible than all the other links out there?

Job market, I'm retired and enjoying life thanks very much. My skills are fine, I'll forget more than you'll ever know.

"We're all riding on the Hindenburg, no sense fighting over the window seats"-Richard Jenni

He's a White House reporter, and it at least backs up my point. None of your links back up your claim that Obama was spending tax payer money for this. EH?

(btw, I only need one link)

Pink Slip

First off, it's dumb to assume the president would know of a photo-op for his plane. It is reasonable to know that at least one of his higher level staff members would have. Although it's doubtful they would have made sure the public knew.

Likewise it's dumb to assume this wasn't funded by taxpayer money. It's two government planes. They're not given out to commercial use due to their importance to national interests.

That being said this isn't a big "gotcha" moment. Some people made an unnecessary bonehead move. You reprimand them, put steps so it doesn't happen again, and move on.

Read the first line.

"We're all riding on the Hindenburg, no sense fighting over the window seats"-Richard Jenni

So what's your point? You still can't back up your claim that taxpayer money was used for pizza-gate.

Pink Slip

And you can't back up your claim it wasn't.

So, at this point, I'm going to take the advice of a wise man;

"never argue with an idiot, he'll drag you down to his level and beat you with experience".

And you can't back up your claim it wasn't.

I already did, in the link I provided. Geesh...nice one-liner though. It must be nice to finally use it on someone else for a change, eh?
