4p-7:30p The Dead Zone-Council Meeting Tuesday Afternoon

For three and one half hours we sat and listened to the council, the administration, and finally the public weigh in one the mayor's seven proposals for balancing the budget. Not suprisingly most of the talk centered around the "exigent circumstances" cited by Bob Reinbolt as a reason for voiding the union's contracts.
The heads of the unions all took time to speak this afternoon and made impassioned pleas for thier membership. TPPA's Wagner said he is ready to negotiate NOW. Apparently they were listening upstairs because shortly after that it was announced that the administration would like to sit down on Wednesday at 2p. Oddly enough Local 92 firefighters had a meeting scheduled for Wednesday at 9a which got cancelled because the mayor wanted his bargaining unit in another meeting. Does anyone on the 22nd floor know what's going on?
I have audio from one of the most powerful speakers this afternoon, Sean Gray, the General Counsel for AFSCME 8 Ohio. He completely blows away the argument of "exigent circumstances" which the city is relying on.
Mc Namara and the Local 20 guy get into it pretty well, as do McNamara and Wagner. Jim Martin of Local 92 takes after Waniewski and the head of the HIlltop Coalition takes off on all of them.
A little longer than expected but I will have audio tomorrow and the WSPD news department will have updates on all the proceedings on our website and tomorrow morning during the newscasts.
By the way, the mayor was there from 4p until he slunk out around 5:15 or so, I watched him leave with Scout while the rest of us stayed 'til the bitter end.

Fred was it just me or did it seem as though the temperature was very low in council chambers.....I had cold air blowing directly on me during the entire meeting. Im not big on conspiracy theories, but I wondered if it wasnt intentional to "freeze" the audience into leaving?

I was very warm, what with all those bodies packed in there. The only thing cold in there was the mayor's grin while he listened to a few of the questions.

No Fred your very cold! When I offer a contrarian view formatted in the same negative WSPD way you block my comments. I find it ironic that you spew all forms of attacks at your supposed enemies but when someone offers credible opposition you black ball them from the radio. Where is the free flow of ideas worthy of a news talk radio station? Nice try Fred!

My what is very cold wolfie? I haven't heard you call the show yet, did you? If you are referring to the rambling, disjointed, inane e-mails you send, of course they go right to junk mail. Call the show and I'll get you on, just don't expect to be able to ramble on without questions about your positions. Or you could get a show of your own and offer your credible positions to the audience. Good luck.

Wow!! Pick up your ball and go home. Anytime I have called Fred, Brian or Maggie I have always got on, no matter what my views were. Weather you people want to believe it or not WSPD is changing the way the media is perceived in this god forsaken town, the blah no longer rules the roost. The take back Toledo effort was awesome!! Over 40,000 signatures probably closer to 50, get a grip wolfman.

Listen to WWJ 950AM for a clue about News Radio.

Ummm....ok.... I want to listen to a news radio station who's city is more F upped than Toilet Town. Good Advice

...backed up by 40,000 bodies on the streets across from One Government Center demanding that Carty resign, and the failed council with him.

Sobszak said something along the lines of we all need to not think or not be concerned about how the city got into this situation. We need to stop blaming people. We just need to act now.

How would that either-or scenario play out if it's based on fallacious reasoning? Obviously we need action, blame alone doesn't fix the problem but neither does Sobszak's proposal fix it either.

The truth is that we need to show who and what is to blame so it won't happen again in addition to "action".

...we would have gone through the hard times, and been out the other side by now. By tying our future to the auto industry we set ourselves up for this. If we had allowed Jeep to leave, then those who wanted employment at that rate would have left with them. We would not be trying to continue unemployment to people who have no prospect of employment. So Carty is to blame for keeping Jeep in Toledo.

This town is so against business that they dont even want to use sound business policy to fix itself!

Im involved with problem solutions where I work. There are two parts to every solution, Root cause determination, and corrective action.

You cannot determine the latter without being able to discern the former.

If your horses keep getting out of the barn because the farmer's moron brother is working the gate, maybe the fix is as simple as replacing the moron.

I think Toledo's problems might be more involved than replacing our morons, but it'd be the first place to start, and I hope to Hell the TBT venture in that direction is not only a success in getting rid of our main moron, but getting the other twelve to start acting like elected officials themselves.
