Don’t Build an Ark Yet! Help is on the Way!

The dedication and diligence of long-time township resident and property owner Penny Levine is paying off for residents of the Sylvania area. For many years residents of Sylvania Township have been treading water, but since 2008 they are now drowning.

Levine has addressed the flooding and blockages of Ten Mile Creek many times during Sylvania Township meetings, only to be turned away with excuses by the trustees such as: “property owners will not permit the township on their property” and “it’s not the township’s responsibility”. Last July, Levine took action. On her own, Levine sent out paperwork to all 160 effected property owners asking them to sign Right of Entry releases which give the county, township, and any entity hired through the local governments an owner’s permission to enter their property.

The response was outstanding, and with that, Levine arranged meetings with all 3 Lucas County Commissioners, attorneys, and engineers to establish a plan of attack to clean the debris and blockages from the Ten Mile Creek. Levine now represents the Sylvania area on the recently formed Lucas County Storm Water Advisory Committee, which was established to assist the county in reaching out to Sylvania area residents and others in the county with flooding issues. Sadly, last week was the worst flooding that Levine, her neighbors, and other township residents have endured, resulting in significant loss and damage to their homes and properties.

Fortunately, Levine had arranged with Lucas County to hold a Sylvania area meeting, the
purpose of which is to discuss plans for the clean out of Ten Mile Creek. Stimulus monies have been filed for through the Department of Natural Resources, Lucas County, and the Emergency Management Agency, who will be available to assist residents with filing for property losses due to the July, 2008 and March, 2009 flooding.

The public meeting will be held Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at 6:00 P. M. at the Sylvania
Township Administration Building, 4927 Holland-Sylvania Road. Levine urges all interested citizens to attend and bring any personal flood pictures and a list of their losses due to invasion of water and damage to their homes and vehicles. For more information prior to the meeting, Levine may be reached at 419-841-3944 or levcnsee at aol.com .
