Truth and consequences

The other side of the story of what happened at MVCDS as told by students.
=====
If Mr. Reindl was not aware enough to take note of Mr. Stainbrook’s comments on the subject of Mr. Miller’s talk being “boring,” which devolved into him making nasty and insulting comments about Mr. Miller’s weight, then I would suggest Mr. Reindl leave the field of journalism.

From the article: The story on what happened in our class was almost completely rearranged and falsified.

Well, that's going to leave a mark.

This isn't the first time The Blade has printed misquotations as fact, and it's not likely to be the last. Any odds on The Blade printing a retraction?

Michael Miller could lose a few pounds.

Do we expect honest, objective reporting from The Blade? No! They are just continuing the partisanship, masquerading as news, that they have been pushing for years. I hope the paper folds.

"One of America's Finest Newspapers" pretty much violates any truth in advertizing laws that are out there, how 'bout just tweak it a little to

"One of America's Phoniest Newspapers"?

Or, and I kind of like this one -

"The Toledo Blade - All the News That's Fit to Twist"

The Blade changed it in the online edition, Brian, because they dropped the "629 sworn officers" sentence. They must be reading SB.

The real victim here is JC Reindl. I've read his news and feature stories and he is a fine reporter and writer. It was dismaying to see him ripped in the Toledo Free Press. The fact that his Issue Day story was so disjointed, complete with a headline that had nothing to do with the first five or six paragraphs, clearly shows that an editor either demanded a last-minute rewrite or attempted to do a (very botched) rewrite himself after getting a call from the Stain. It's entirely possible Reindl turned in his story without any references to the Miller-Stainbrook episode and was the most shocked Blade reader the next day when he saw what the story had become. I say this because his byline was on the story; knowing what his story was becoming probably would have moved him to request/demand removal of his byline. Very alarming, though, was the failed attempt at the rewrite. Back when the Blade was fully staffed with capable editors and copyeditors, even a last-minute rewrite would have been seamless.

Donwert,

What you say is true. J.C. may have been thinking "What the hell am I doing here?" Reporters don't get to choose their stories.

Reporters also don't get to read the final version of a story that they file before it goes to print.

Having worked closely with many Blade reporters over the years, I'm willing to give J.C. the benefit of the doubt here and assign this pathetic episode to one of the editors.

I'm with Donwert and Brian. I've known a number of reporters at the Blade over the years and they tell tales of turning in stories that are manipulated and altered to something that they are embarrased to have their byline on...so they pull it. I beleive that that is/was in their contract. Whenever you see a story without a byline, the reporter has likely pulled it because they didn't feel that the story resembled what they wrote.

As someone who worked in the business and was made to do covers certain stories or put things into print that i wouldn't have done otherwise, I sympathize.

Why did Reindl not interview the students? Was it time constraints that had him rushing from this "human interest" story to something more interesting? I do not always go along with the Blade as one of Ohio's worst papers, but when the Toledo Free Press actually reports a story and has witnesses versus the cobbled version by Reindl, I have to say the Blade may have seen its best days. If there are going to be layoffs they might want to look to their reporters and editors.
