With A Name Like Smuckers It's Got To Be Profitable

Tagged:

Watching 13 news at 5 I was a little suprised to see the news about Mayor Finkbeiner asking council to approve money for Smucker to expand their Toledo facility. Of course the mayor will tout the retained jobs and the 25 new jobs. What he left out was the fact that in November of last year Smucker reported a second-quarter profit of $51.5 million, or 94 cents a diluted share. That's a 2.6 percent increase from $50.2 million, or 87 cents a share, in the same quarter last year. That's a nice chunk of change. So my question is why are we giving a tax break to a company that made a $51.5 million dollar profit just last year? I'm sure the citizens who live here and work elsewhere will take this news well.

In 2008, Smucker was named the 47th best company to work for by Fortune and they're on track to double their revenue in three years. If you were mayor, would you reject Smucker's tax credit application?

Well Fred, you don't want Carty giving away tax dollars to companies that may not be around long enough to get out of the incentive period so the city can get their full tax rate do you? and let's face it, 25 new jobs! that is great! awesome! I mean with an unemployment rate at or near 10%, 25 new jobs is what a .0001% improvement! That is all by its self reason enough to re-elect Carty for a fourth term! (please read with a lot of sarcasm)!

So my question is why are we giving a tax break to a company that made a $51.5 million dollar profit just last year?

That question is NOT business-friendly

Ha - I noticed that also. Perhaps this is the first time Fred has complained about tax breaks for businesses. Watch out - next thing we are going to hear from Fred is a press release declaring that the rich should pay more taxes.

BTW, Fred: not to rain on your parade, but when you are in a political battle, it is important to remember that sometimes your opponent actually does something intelligent. When the opposition gets one right, savvy political operatives ignore the good news and either: a) find bad news to counteract the good news; or b)announce their own good news to drown out the positive PR of the opponent.

I might be just as desirous of seeing Carty retire as you, but occasionally the C-man is going to have his successes. By attacking an actual job-creating success, you just look like a whiner.

(full disclosure: historymike is generally against the idea of corporate welfare, espescially like the billions in local, state, and federal tax revenues and abatements doled out to the former Daimler-Chrysler, but he recognizes that cities like Toledo are stuck competing with other municipalities for the same number of dwindling manufacturing jobs, and he would rather live in a city that actively woos business than one that allows the Rust Belt blood loss to continue unabated).

I don't see Carty as creating any jobs here. Smucker which could certainly afford to expand without our help since they made $51.5 million in the third quarter last year. What I see here is the taxpayers giving a tax break to a company which doesn't need it and us picking up any lost tax dollars in their place. All for the sake of 25 NEW jobs!!!! And the promise that they will stay here 12 years. What a deal.

That makes no sense at all.

What a maroooon.

If TBT is about getting a handle on the local politics and politicians, you live in Toledo, why doesn't TBT support your run for mayor? You seem (or think) to know the city and the way to get things going!

(here comes the tap dance music)

if Smuckers announced they were leaving Toledo? Fred will kill him that way as well, Fred has both sides covered. Way to go Fred! How harmful do you think it is to businesses who come to Toledo scouting locations and hearing you and the other douchebag put Toledo down in every single manor?

Well put toledoglasscat. Fred and Brian will never run for office, depsite all of their brilliant ideas and incisive observations because 1) it's so much easier to sit on the sidelines and criticize those in power than it is to actually do anything and 2) who the hell would vote for either of these blowhards?

This way, Fred can't lose; either Carty sucks because Smuckers gets a tax break to stay or Carty sucks because he didn't do enough to keep them.

I have no love for Carty but I have even less regard for those who do nothing but bitch and moan like the "braintrust" at WSPD does. Either throw your hats in the ring and show us what great leaders do, or STFU. You are certainly not attracting any candidates with your one-note garbage so it's up to you to "take back Toledo".

Yep, and you don't have to struggle to come up with daily talking points/agendas for your show/station when both sides are covered.

That's a great question asscat. Can you give me one, just one example of a business that has said they wouldn't come here because of something I said on air? By your logic we should give every company in the city a tax break because otherwise they might leave someday. Brilliant!!

You always know how to prove my points. I can not prove a company that refused to come to Toledo, because they are not here. They listened to your show and took their business to another town. They heard about how "poorly" run this city is and decided to go elsewhere. Have you ever held a job outside a radio, ever ran a business or held a public office? Other than paying taxes what makes you qualified to give the amount of criticism you do on a daily basis? The only qualification you have is you are a resident who pays taxes. You are no different than the crazy guy who puts up signs in their yard, except you have a microphone on a AM station. When they cite your station as reason to bring back the Fairness Doctrine will you feel pride? When the Toledo Blade wins another Pulitzer covering your station, and cost your job... what will you tell your family? That it is Carty's fault!

I printed this one out and am hanging it in my studio.....it's priceless. Thank you glass, you just made my day. Big ups to you.

WSPD. Bad for business.

[edit] Maybe we could get the names of the people whose jobs are being retained, and the names of the new employees of Smuckers---and see what their thoughts are about WSPD. And then we could ask them how much money they spend at places like David Flairclough, J. Foster Jewelers, Everdry Waterproofing, etc...

My stake in Toledo is my tax dollars, sent in on time every time both payroll and property. There is no need for me to run for mayor to prove something to you unidentified whiners. My taxes and my votes give me the right, hell the responsibility, to speak out when I see elected officials misusing funds. It's a shame more of you don't see that. As long as there are $10 thousand checks, living wages, bike paths, golden showers, flowers, signage, banners, lights, unplowed snow, leaves left in piles in December, double dippers on the 22nd etc. etc. I'll have plenty to talk about.

'golden showers'

This site is rated PG-13. Clean up your act, you naughty boy you.

And here came Fred, "There is no need for me to run for mayor to prove something". I think there is Fred! You seem to have a justified excuse for EVERYTHING from if they stay or if they go. At no time do you reach out to help the cause. Just BITCH and complain like your boss Brian behind a mic (that is short for m-i-c-r-o-p-h-o-n-e in my Stritch teaching).

But wait, your name would be new to the ballot with no family history. I forgot, you may be the next wspd target of being such a failure and O My God The bashing! See Fred, it takes a man or women to run for an office, any office. Continue being a sidekick does not get you higher in the wspd ranks. Put up or shut up.

btw, Your stake in Toledo is more then just tax dollars.

Yes, I'll be taking the "put up or shut up" seriously from someone named why are you envious.....LOL. Nice try tan but it won't fly here.

Fred said:

"...taxpayers giving a tax break to a company which doesn't need it ."

This sounds like the sort of "fairness" and "to each according to his need" kind of communist rhetoric that the GOP warned us about in the 2008 elections.

My God! The Republicans were right! The socialists have kidnapped Fred LeFebvre and brainwashed him into preaching Marxist ideology! Run! Stock up the nuke shelters! The Red Menace is afoot!
