Jon Stainbrook's 6 month tally

I composed this tally for thread on Glass City Jungle.
Talk about ineffective leadership, let’s look at Jon's accomplishments in the last 6 months:
-Forgets to file paperwork to get Jan Scotland on the ballot, blames everyone and their uncles. His own mistake cost citizens the right to a second choice. Of course that is a “rookie mistake” although I can’t remember any other rookies making this mistake in the past.
-Testifies on behalf of Robert Croak on having the civic center theater in the Erie Street Market at council - it is very un-Republican to justify government going into competition with private sector.
-Forgets to file the campaign paperwork on time. Unbelievably says that they thought they did not have to because they did not spend over $1,000. Lord knows how they can operate several months and not spend over $1,000. Noe’s got 150k in donations in 04. If Jon got 10% of that, that is 15K. Obviously questions there, and if the donations can be traced some of the leadership may be back in front of a judge again for stealing. This must also be a “rookie mistake”
-Endorses levies without any thought on if they match Republican principals or not. Does not even know what he voted for (almost like it was some drunken bash) and also says that he sat down with Carty to get feedback on COSI. Other Republican clubs end up saying no to the COSI levy.
-Has no central committee meetings to organize the precincts to GOTV. Then has one a couple of weeks ago which lasted just minutes.
-No communication of what is going on to central committee members.
-Threatens everyone and their uncle that he will personally sic the Blade on them or destroy them if they do not do what he says.
-Has people working at HQ in the past election who proudly say they will vote for Obama, but helping out Jon because he is their friend.
-Not to mention the % Q’s that Talbot brings up above.
-Oh they made many phone calls.

Chris,

Is it necessary to air our dirty laundry before the public?

Your jonstainbrooksucks website is as damaging to the Republican cause as anything Jon and his friends have done or not done.

About which do you care more? Your ego or advancing this city, county, state and country through the election of Republicans? I understand why you would be angry if Jon or one of his people threatened you. There is one of his associates that I absolutely can not tolerate. However, we need to stop this intra-party sniping.

Jon is your chairman. It's going to be 18 months before you can do anything about it. Live with it.

Could we not say that Carty is our Mayor (well not your Mayor since you live in Oregon) but that people should just live with it?

Aren't we doing damage to our public reputation in "airing our dirty laundry?"

Or is it different because you don't support the Mayor and you support Jon?

If it's okay to want to get rid of the Mayor because you are not happy with his leadership, then you would think that those who are not happy with the leadership of their party would also merit the same consideration.

We don't remember days only moments...

Ouch. Score one for Lisa. Well played...

Pink Slip

But, the double standard displayed at times is one that always bothers me.

Either we are for people standing up when they are unhappy with their leadership and pointing out why, especially if it's valid reasons and not personal slights or everyone should just be quiet until it's time for the next election.

We don't have to agree with them, just as I personally think recalling the Mayor for such a short time is pointless, but it doesn't mean that I'm going to tell them that they have no right to speak up.

If I were a Republican I could agree or disagree with Chris on Jon Stainbrook, but I should have the right to publicly question my party leadership...

We don't remember days only moments...

There is no recall mechanism in place to remove Jon. Nothing short of something that disqualifies him as an elector in the state of Ohio will remove him from the chairmanship of the Lucas County Republican Party. His people control the Republican Party and they are not likely to turn on him.

You make it sound as if I'm taking sides between Chris and Jon. I am not on either side. I'm on the side of the Republican Party and I want both parties to cease and desist.. It is destructive to local efforts to elect Republicans. Jon chides me because I am (was) "friends" with Troy Neff who is (was) his chief nemesis.

If Gerald Ford could put aside his animosity for Ronald Reagan, Chris can put aside his for Jon. Otherwise, we'll have a Rockefeller versus Goldwater situation and those who know history how that turned out and why.

Sometimes the only way to change things is to "air the dirty laundry". Whether an individual or group, we usually get stronger by accepting the truth or the perception of truth and acting on it. Sure it's embarrassing, but most of the time something will get done.

The sure way to no action is to try and keep it private. The Republican party has made some big mistakes nationally and locally. We are all better when we have more than one playing at the table. Democrats are better when challenged. We get better public policy when there is challenge (just think of the situation that led us to Iraq). The local Republican party should embrace the mistakes and/or problems and take action to correct them in a public way. You might find that the voters have more faith in future Republican candidates if they know they are genuinely addressing the issues. We need both parties - actually we probably need a viable third party.

Debate is critical to change.

I'm with you Lisa - I don't much care for double standards.

OR

There is no recall mechanism in place to remove Jon

If there were no recall mechanism would you be supporting your former employer Carty?

I'm on the side of the Republican Party

And that's apparantly where you and Chris (and most of the rest of the conservatives out here) part ways. WE happen to be FOR Toledo. We're for toledo BEFORE we're for the party, and from what you're saying, it sounds like you're a republican first, and a toledoan second.

The Stain is just as much an embarassing symptom of the disease that is effecting toledo as Carty or any of the union owned council are. His alliance with the Block family shows that his interests are personal rather than in Toledo.

SFlagg,

Could not agree with you more! I always tell people that this nation needs its pacifists lest we run off to to war at the drop of a hat. I don't usually agree with pacifists, but God help our country if they are ever silenced.

If Chris complained about the party to other party members in private, I'd be okay with that. He should do that. However, the Republican Party is not a governmental agency. It is a political organization and affiliation. Furthermore, there is nothing that is going to unseat Jon in the immediate future, so the only thing that unprovoked carping accomplishes is to further diminish the already diminished Republican Party brand.

Differences in the Republican Party should be settled behind closed doors -- not in public.

...off to war. My brother-in-law is a pacifist because he actually takes the commandment "Thou shalt not kill" literally. His father was also a pacifist in WW II, and ended up as a smoke jumper out in Montana for the duration. My father (who was an infantryman during the war) thought highly of this father because of his moral courage. That man did what he thought was good rather than what was popular.

My dad enlisted to kill Japs. He was ambivalent about fighting the Germans. He said they were an awful lot like him. He admired their professionalism. But he shot at them just as they shot at him (with no choice in the matter).

My dad had the anti-semiticism prevalent at that time. He did not fight the Germans to save the Jews but because that was were the army sent him. When I was a kid he still believed that most Jews were rich, and that if they were not, it was a moral failing.

I considered being a conscientious objector, but found that my Baptist church would not support me in such a choice. I was ambivalent about the Vietnam War.

I remembered looking at the monument at Fort Meigs to the men from Kentucky who came to Ohio to fight in the War of 1812. I thought in my immaturity that was like our stand in Vietnam. I enlisted for more than one reason, and had a couple for not enlisting. I remember my father coming to my bedroom, and asking me not to go. He said if they take you that is not your choice, but you will regret enlisting. I did not. I ended in a relatively safe environment, and never had to make some of the "moral" choices some men must make. I got my honorable discharge, a government job (eventually), and had the choice of other benefits for service.

In our history can you think of anytime that we came near the brink of war, and backed away because of a "pacifist" streak in the body politic? The closest I can think of is WW I, and we eventually got into that one. Just as under Obama there is a good chance we will end up conducting military operations in Pakistan.

Billy,

As Lisa pointed out, Carty is not my mayor. I live in Oregon. Whether or not I would support Carty if there were no recall mechanism in place is not material to the debate because Carty and Jon are much different animals. Carty is the mayor of a major Ohio city. He is elected at-large, bound by the city charter (supposedly), and responsible to the electorate (supposedly).

Jon is the chairman of a political party. Jon is beholden to the Republican Party Central Committee. He has no power to affect policy, enact laws, or implement regulations.

The Republican Party is not a governmental organization. Unlike the bodies of government, we have the right to hold our arguments and debates in private. It is advantageous to the party to do it just that way.

As for the statement that I am a Republican before I am a Toledoan is non-sequiter.

don't live in Toledo and certainly not a Republican. I also don't know or particularly care about all the 'behind-the-scenes' baloney apparently going on within the local Repub. Party.

However this statement is probably pertinent to this discussion:

'Either we are for people standing up when they are unhappy with their leadership and pointing out why, especially if it's valid reasons and not personal slights or everyone should just be quiet until it's time for the next election'.

I'd say anyone who'd name a website jonstainbrooksucks.com as a venue to air grievances and point out mistakes and faults of an obvious rival has some significant personal issues with said rival.

The maturity level here on several counts by a couple of the main characters is....sorely lacking and constantly amusing.

... this is also why I will never run for public office. :)

is that he recruited a bunch of non political morons to vote for him, many have never returned. Several also stated that they would be voting for Obama in the presidential eleciton, those are the good republicans supporting the stain on society.

He has brought into his inner circle Matthew Bartow, a criminal who admittedly stole from a Municipal Court Judge's campaign fund. How many more candidates will be bilked by Bartow?

Given the stain's history of supporting Dem candidates and his relationship with JR Block (who endorsed Obama in Feb. 2008) one has to wonder if this was all just an effort to thwart the efforts of the Republican candidate and make a smooth path for Obama in Ohio. If you take a look a the numbers he definitely helped in that respect! In Lucas County he lost nearly 6 more percentage points when compared to the numbers from 2000. Especially when you consider the number of phone calls that they were supposedly making for McCain. They sometimes led the state and the nation in calls, still they failed to translate those numbers into votes. Chris has made some valid points and yes Brian there is a way to remove the stain from his leadership position. A vote of no confidence of the central committee would remove him although i doubt they have the balls to do it since he has threatened to smear anyone who dares to cross him in the blade.
