The lies and the damn lies...

The lies, the damn lies, and why it really doesn't seem to matter:

"John Feehery, a Republican strategist, said the campaign is entering a stage in which skirmishes over the facts are less important than the dominant themes that are forming voters' opinions of the candidates.

"The more the New York Times and The Washington Post go after Sarah Palin, the better off she is, because there's a bigger truth out there and the bigger truths are she's new, she's popular in Alaska and she is an insurgent," Feehery said. "As long as those are out there, these little facts don't really matter." "

In other words, lie to your heart's content, McCain-Palin '08, because America has been dumbed down so far the voters just don't care. We're one big People Magazine cover.

I was listening to Bill Bennett spin during the RNC, and he said something that mirrors your point McCaskey. He said that the founding fathers intended Americans to vote for their president based on character. Now of course, this is the point-----Republicans don't want to debate issues and policy and FACTS. They want to convince you their candidate has more character. Facts be damned. For instance, it doesn't matter that Obama's tax cuts will help more Americans, what matters is McCain was a POW and Sarah Palin is a hockey mom.

They are not tax cuts but tax credits. Tax cuts can't go to those that don't pay fed taxes. Tax credits do, it's called income redistribution. Obama called it being a good neighbor during his visit to the no spin zone.

No - My wife and I pay taxes...more that a few dollars to be sure, so we're not going to get a "tax credit" we're going to get a tax cut.

I pay a crapload of taxes. Those tax cuts will help everyone in the middle class.

That's the middle class making somewhere's around 150,000 and below and NOT the "middle class" McCain claims at around 5 million and less!

Obama has not proposed a reduction in tax rates! Instead they are tax credits. Now if you do pay income taxes it will reduce your tax dollar for dollar. If the amount of the credit is more than the taxes owed or you do not pay any income taxes you will still get money. Money you didn't pay. That my friends is income redistribution. You can be for that proposal if you like but I suggest you study up a little more on the subject and come back later.

And lentileater be prepared for the coming attack tonight when some of the posters find out you think $150,000 is middle class. I know from personal experience.

yeah lenti, I'd love to see the neighborhood you're living in if $150,000 is middle class.

somewhere around 150,000 and BELOW.

but in case you missed it, your definition of "middle class" in Toledo differs greatly than the $150,000 a year of those around you make.

Heck, I'd love to see how many people make even close to $100,000 and not consider themselves "rich".

How much money does it take to be in the middle class?

Tess Vigeland: So, is there a hard and fast number to define the middle class?

United States government, you wanna help us out here? No? Not really?

Well, at least there's an official poverty line. In 2007, it was an annual income under $20,650 for a family of four.

As for middle class, well, the Congressional Research Service issued a report last year pegging middle class income as between $19,000 a year and $91,000 a year.

But even the specialist in quantitative economics who put together that study said there is no consensus or official government definition.

So we decided to ask around.

candidate has proposed real tax reform and simplification like a flat tax, sales tax...why isn't that being debated? It is what we really need.

"Those with no net tax liability will still be eligible to receive a rebate, provided they meet minimum qualifying income of $3,000 per year."

No tax liability and yet they get a rebate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_Stimulus_Act_of_2008#Tax_rebates

Brought to us by the current administration.

And how we pay for the rebates? With the increased revenue from the stimulus spending?

That's a great question? How can you get a rebate if you didn't pay? And the rebates did such a nice job of stimulating the economy didn't they. Maybe when Obama is prez it will work for him since he proposes another round.

Simple, Congress authorizes it.

Tax cut, tax credit---more people would be getting more money back under Obama's plan. Call it progressive taxation---an idea that most economists (including Adam Smith) agree with. And under McCain's plan, the deficit would be increased by $5,000,000,000,000 dollars.

Yes, remember Republican Rule of Acquisition # 60: Keep your lies consistent.

Pink Slip

as the posted link points out.

But gutter-poltics have proven to work, the GOP tactics in this regard are reknown, and, at least as presidential races go, Republicans have a real feel for where the American psyche is and how to exploit it.

They are way ahead of the Dems in this game.

In all honesty, I blame us--the voters of this country--for allowing themselves to be sucked into this whirlpool of bullshit more than I do the GOP.
