Toledo part of group of cities suing online travel site taxes

An interesting article in the Dispatch:

Columbus and other Ohio cities aren't getting their fair share of taxes for hotel rooms booked through online travel sites, according to a federal lawsuit that seeks millions in extra payments.

Web sites such as Orbitz, Expedia and Hotels.com pay discounted rates to hotels and charge higher amounts to consumers who book the rooms online. Attorneys for Columbus, Dayton, Toledo and nine other municipalities say the sites are collecting taxes from travelers based on the higher rates they charge but are calculating their own tax liabilities based on the lower rates they pay.
