Huckabee: Amend Constitution to be in 'God's standards'

The United States Constitution never uses the word "God" or makes mention of any religion, drawing its sole authority from "We the People." However, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee thinks it's time to put an end to that.

"I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution," Huckabee told a Michigan audience on Monday. "But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living god. And that's what we need to do -- to amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than try to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view."

When Willie Geist reported Huckabee's opinion on MSNBC's Morning Joe, co-host Mika Brzezinski was almost speechless, and even Joe Scarborough couldn't immediately find much to say beyond calling it "interesting,"

Scarborough finally suggested that while he believes "evangelicals should be able to talk politics ... some might find that statement very troubling, that we're going to change the Constitution to be in line with the Bible. And that's all I'm going to say."

Geist further noted of Huckabee that if "someone without his charm," said that, "he'd be dismissed as a crackpot, but he's Mike Huckabee and he's bascially the front-runner."

Sleight of mouth is more like it. While it is true that 'God' isn't mentioned in the Constitution, this article makes the presumption that the public does not know what the founding documents contain or what their purposes were. Hope that's wrong but just in case......;-)

The Declaration of Independence stated the intention of the Colonies to separate and become independent from British rule. This was a bold, brave move and a slap in the face to the British throne and it's mighty army and navy as well. It was the equivalent of that poster where the little mouse is in the big eagles jaws. But it's flying the single finger salute. The whole world thought it was suicide to do this.

THAT document begins with this: "When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

The Constitution did not declare any beliefs. That was the 'DECLARATION' of Independence.

If, in fact, Huckabee said this I find it a little distressing that he is not aware of the purposes of the different documents.

One is a passionate declaration. The other is more of a business outline. Why would you put your philosophical beliefs in a directive document when the God issue was already handled quite well in such a well known declaration? Makes me wonder if this is a true story.

I agree with what you're saying kate. One is like a mission statement the other is like the actual standards and practices used.

The first post says it makes no reference to religion. That's not correct. It actually states the world religion "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion?... or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."



If we keep this up, we'll be running the country on Old Testament law, in the same way some Islamic countries use the Koran to guide theirs. Let's see... an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. Then we can have the sectarian violence seen over in those countries, except here we'll have the Protestants fighting the Catholics.

Things seem to be going backward in this country. I think all these religious nuts are very dangerous to our society.

Watching the Republican party tear itself to shreds is far more entertaining than I thought it would be! If you can't alter the "living word of God", how come you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a different denomination of Christianity?

It is kind of fun watching the Neo-Cons and Corporate-Cons fall all over themselves at the thought of a Theo-Con winning the Republican nomination.

Huckabee is just trying to hold onto the evangelicals that are leaving him after the fact that he is a big government populist is becoming known. As an evangelical, considered him for a second, then found out what he was about, and moved on. But if he or McCain get elected, say goodbye the the GOP.

Inherently I think you're right EXCEPT if McCain wins the nomination and takes on Lieberman as a running mate. The two are friends, Lieberman has shown an ability to beat other Democrats and the ticket would seem more moderate.

Right now McCain has Lieberman as his ace in the hole. It was Lieberman's endorsement that got McCain the momentum on the way to the win in N.H.

That's the only scenario where I could see voters looking past age and going for McCain. But the point about the Neocons vs the Theocons is good but it's happening on the Dem side as well with the sexism vs racism debate. The only difference is that is starting to get personal. They should knock it off before they hurt both candidacies.

Who knows what might happen? The Dem party is split along racial lines between Clinton and Obama.

The media makes waaaaaay too much out of this. It's sickening.

I have long said the media is becoming more and more sensationalistic. This is a product of that.



We should leave it this way . The old monuments and writings in D.C.
refer more specifically to God

If the founding fathers intended this country to be a theocracy then they would have written the consititution that way. They didn't. This isn't and the fundies need to accept that.
Quite frankly with their killing of Doctors , bombing of clinics and wasn't it oral roberts who was calling for the assaination of other leaders as well as a hateful condemnation of state of Mass. for its same sex unions, they are (IMHO) becoming just as disgusting and frightening as islamic jihadists.
