Finkbeiner prepares to vie for title of most 'liveable city'

Mayor Carty Finkbeiner rose to a podium in downtown Toledo yesterday afternoon and imagined himself before an audience in London.

As the video screen behind him flickered to life, he launched into an introductory speech that was written to prove to the globe why Toledo deserves the title "world's most liveable city."

Images of Fifth Third Field and the Veterans' Glass City Skyway flashed overhead, and the mayor declared Toledo, "one of America's great cities."

"Certainly not the largest, or the smallest, but one of the proudest," Mayor Finkbeiner said before the mostly empty main auditorium in Fifth Third Center at One SeaGate.

Amid images of lush metroparks, the sparkling Maumee River, and the city's spectacular summer fireworks shows, talking points of Toledo's strengths flashed on the screen:

"Inviting Waterfronts. Picturesque Views. Alternative Energy Leader. Clean Safe Water. Walleye Fishing Capital Of The World."

Beg pardon....Clean Safe Water?

There are bodies of water and streams in the greater Toledo area that are clearly marked to not swim in and do not fish as they are NOT clean and safe, Hello Mr. Mayor,,,Let us get the water ways cleaned up so we can enjoy them and not be hurt by them.

Can you picture what else that twisted mind imagines himself doing?

Reminds me of an old Police Academy movie where Leslie Nielson was addressing an audience including the Queen of England...

"While we in Toledo dont have a king or a queen, and think the concept silly, as the STRONG Mayor, I assume the duties that would normally be ascribed to a King..."

There are actually bodies IN our bodies of water...

Toledo is one of seven award finalists worldwide - and the only one from the United States - among cities having a population of between 200,001 and 750,000.

Now, how did this process work and who selected Toledo to be a finalist......worldwide?

The man is delusional.

I believe the Mayor was speaking of our drinking water.

How so? I hear they have PLANS for developing some type of alternative energy, but talking about it dont make it so...

As I was reading this out loud, my wife thought she was going to have to call 911 because she thought I was going to laugh myself to death.

good line about the bodies in water

...all applications were reviewed by the UN LivCom group and then the 'finalists' were selected to come and do a short presentation consisting of only 3 presenters.

some of the criteria for the award:

Note - couldn't find anything to say how many applicants there were or where they were all from...and I now cynically have visions of some clerk sitting in front of a computer doing daily Google searches for award programs the city can apply to...

Remember, when the herd has already trampled you to the point of insanity, its difficult to tell if the noise you hear is the herd coming or going.

I made a very bad typo. What I meant to say was that there are bodies of water in the area that are unsafe, I passed on this a.m. near the old Jeep Plant, and meant to write that the waters are harmful to us and have signs posted to warn us away, just like those in Point Place.
