Voting for theft and slavery

The theme of the pending vote for the proposed levies for COSI, Metroparks, library and TARTA is clear. It is not a new one in government bureaucracy and certainly not new in Toledo. That theme is

No votes yet

As much as I hate to say this: This is a very well written piece. Wilson sums up a very caustic reality. I'm not often in agreement with Wilson's extreme (I'm) Right views, but in this case, I am.

I feel very strongly that we should all vote down these levies. I just don't think any of us can afford to continue funding failure, mis-management, fiscal irresponsibility and poor judgement. We have enough of that at One Government.

The very idea that we will just grant an open checkbook to these organizations is ludicris. While they offer a certain sector of our society some comfort, they mostly bleed cash and stupidity like a stuck pig. We can do all 4 of these things better, they know what has to be done and they refuse. Until they come up with some fresh ideas that don't involve adding further burden to an already stretched society, no more money. Until they have a business plan with real promise and a solid set of realistic goals, no more money. Until the economics of Toledo and the region improve, No More Money! We just cannot afford it.

I agree with Brian Wilson on most everything, re: a Libertarian mindset. He it right on target about how wrong smoking (or any) bans are, just as he is right about these levies. I think I heard or read that COSI plans to offer free admitance for kids on Saturdays - wouldn't that be considered a key money maker day (possibly the biggest)? Seems a little silly to do so, if they are as cash strapped as they claim to be. Wilson also read a letter on his radio show from a man who worked 4 years at COSI; and he claims they were horrible about expenses.

Daimler supervisors are required to put in one hour overtime without pay, every day - that is also slavery, that nobody seems to talk about. I think the reason is to ensure that the big shots at Daimler get their big bonus checks.

"Plainly stated: When a man is forced to work for another man's benefit rather than his own, it's slavery."

Well, then we who(m) work for another are slaves, yes?

Does this even make sense?

"When a few citizens want the other citizens to pay for their museum, library, entertainment,

In the greater scheme of things it is really not all that important.

Discussion is much important.

"So your sentence should read: "We who work for another are slaves"

And who is not a slave to another in the context that Wilson uses. He seems to advocate all being their own boss or master which is ironic as we are own master and yet we still work for others to survive and to prosper and it we did not work for others, what then?

His comments are odd and I cannot understand the point but then again I do not name myself as I do not seek a following based on my name, so my opinions to him do not matter.

Cosi...nice place to visit, but I wouldn't wanna do the audit. They have not made any profit. They are as outdated as the computers the Library wants to replace. While the building they are in is nice, the parking blows. It's not a great location for school buss parking. Also, there is nothing else there that would be a ready tie in. If it were located on the Trail by the Zoo, they would help feed one another.

The Library needs updates on it's standards yet also wants to buy more DVD's and that sort of thing. New carpet or new DVD's...that's the same decisions most of us have to make. Not! We have to decide between heat and food. We have to decide between house payment or homelessness. We have to decide between medication and school clothes. With the ongoing decline of population and funds, we cannot afford the luxury of new carpet. They want new computers. Well, so do I as do most of us. Just becasue we want something like that, doesn't mean we can have it this year. A library is for books, the rest is fluff.

Metro Parks, best summed up by my pal Tim, they bought too much land and now they cannot afford it. Sell! Get over it. You're starting to resemble the City of Toledo in the Slum Lord catagory.

Tarta... See Trimet.org. Catch a clue.

The solution is to trim back to basics and revamp your fund raising abilities. Streamline your operation and fire the quacks that got you here. Liquidate the excess and promote yourselves better. Find yourselves some great grant writers and start the international search for benefactors. You got yourselves into these messes, now get yourselves out.

If we grant these levies, we will be funding more of the SAME. It's never to late to start over and this is where I draw the line. Cut off the cash and force them to put up or shut up.

I had a girlfriend in high school who felt it necessary to point out grammatical errors - drove us nuts, and was annoying as hell. As irritating as those who feel compelled to point out typos or misspelled words on these boards. What is important is what is being said - the rest is nit picking, and belongs in a classroom, by a teacher (or parent). Yes, we know we sometimes make these errors - but geez, move on to something of some importance.

... I am seeing "duplicates" every time you post?

... meaning of the word "slavery". I always thought that to be "enslaved" was to have little freedom, but now it means that one is "enslaved" if a majority of voters votes against one's wishes. So when we gonna rise up against George Bush, and reclaim our "freedom" from Iraq?

Learned this;

"What is a Metropark District?

The Metropolitan Park District of the Toledo Area is a political subdivision of the state of Ohio. The Ohio Revised Code, Section 1545, permits the formation of park districts "which include all or part of a territory within a county." Metroparks of the Toledo Area serves Lucas County.

The Park District is not part of any city or county government. It has its own governing body, a three-member Board of Park Commissioners whose members are appointed by the Lucas County Probate Court Judge.

The Board has the authority to acquire lands inside or outside the Park District for the purpose of conservation. "

"Metroparks is governed by a three-member, volunteer Board of Park Commissioners which meets monthly. Members of the board are: (left to right) Board of Park CommissionersLarry Sykes, Scott J. Savage, vice-presidents; Jack Gallon, president.

The Metroparks Board meets on the third Wednesday of each month at various park district facilities around Lucas County. Meetings are open to the public and typically begin with a work session at 9:30 a.m. followed by the regular meeting at 1 p.m. When necessary, executive sessions are scheduled during the lunch hour."

So, while Wilson complains that it is but a few it is actually a Lucas County few.

The levy is out there for all of Lucas County. While some do not like paying more taxes would we be best served by moving backwards and undoing what has been done and from that came something we can have some pride in?

Or are we slaves to each other with our taxes?

http://toledoohioneighborhoodconcerns.com/blog

Very good statements.

And likewise there are those that will see no problem with the levies and could vote for them as they are able too and the rest of us will feel the pinch.

In the mean time what is the real answer to Wilson's emotional rating comments?

Liberal or Conservative or Democrat or Republican, what does it matter, none are putting plans into place to move us forward, are they?

but we must tap the reserves now. While we are all slaves to money to some degree, we must not become slaves to foolishness. All 4 of the levies are for private business, not that they are not used by the public at large. It's just that they are asking the already strapped voters to bail them out again for their piss poor management.

While I would support an amended version of the Library levy, Cosi, Metro Parks and Tarta are just not signifigant enough to continue to toss money down the Maumme for continued failure. They must come up with a solid business plan over the next year or so if they want any support from me. Clear failure is not a money magnet.

As the Library levy stands this round, I just cannot fathom voting in the positive. Their wish list is just too expansive.

As for Wilson's rant, it's his opinion and it's presented in his usual style over substance. I don't berate him for his passion, just his un-hinged manner. Sometimes the voice of reason comes from a bark.

I know there are many of you out here who dislike WSPD, but I urge you to swallow all that, and go out to their site and pull up the podcasts of their interviews with the different players on these issues.

Listen to Fred's interview of the guy who is in charge of COSI - He asks the right questions, so all you need to do is listen to what comes right out of the horses mouth. In re COSI:

They havent had a business plan in 12 years

He says his Target audience is undefinable - WTF???!!!

He has no business plan for AFTER he gets his money.

They pay no rent, no utilities and the executives are all volunteers -- and still they cant run efficently with all these benefits??

Please - just tune in and listen to what he says. I was actually PRO COSI until I listened not to the radio guys, but to the man who holds the power himself.

ps - then tune in to the interview with the man who has privatized the librarys in many towns across the nation. VERY interesting info.

... and libraries. They may have to close the parks until funds can be raised to open them again, or open only a few. The library would probably still operate (with fewer hours). They would probably have a Monday through Friday schedule from nine to five. That would cut a lot of the costs of manpower (the largest single cost). I am sure something will be worked out to keep the libraries in operation, but it won't be like anything we have now.

Last one out of Toledo please turn out the lights? Let the whole state die, as far as I'm concerned.

No more levies.

Hope you won't take this the wrong way, but I noticed several times your uncertainty about when to use "who" and when to use "whom". Just use "who"! It's always acceptable. (For purists, "who" is ONLY used as the subject of a verb; "whom" in the other uses, e.g., objects of verbs, prepositions, etc. So your sentence should read: "We who work for another are slaves").

I wondered that exact same thing.
If they are so broke why are they giving away admissions on a key day?
I think the poster who says COSI should relocate out of downtown is right on the money. They need to do big things like the Titanic exhibit they had up in Detroit a few years ago. Special things like that would draw more people to visit, even if they didn't relocate.
Maybe they should turn Southwyck into COSI.

No need to listen, you said all right here.

I am not pro or con this or that. Being an informed consumer of media is important, though.

I cannot see the value in COSI in the downtown area other than it is an attraction for visitors downtown. I went once, too many years ago to remember exactly when and it was the same as most I had seen.

Now, if the location was say somewhere, like the Southwyck area, well now we are talking. Room to expand and develop into a larger draw, that's what we need.

Not if Wilson had his way. In his Libertarian wet dream, libraries and parks would only be funded by those who are willing and able to pay for them. It goes along with his elitist self delusional ego, but that is what he is clearly advocating.

If I had to write a check each year for $150 to $200 dollars to both the park and library I would, but I'm guessing many could not.

Pete, this is a decent post. Leave the grammar be. These are Taxes to be levied on the common man. If the common man doesn't use the grammar you want him to, start a different post. This one is more important than that.
