In yet another sign that there's a new sheriff running Toledo City Council, President Michael Ashford has appointed an A-team-dominated group to B-team Mayor Carty Finkbeiner's budget task force.
Three of Mr. Ashford's appointees - himself and fellow Democrats Frank Szollosi and Michael Craig - opposed the $5.50 monthly trash-collection fee when it was enacted as part of the 2007 budget in March.
"We want to meet with the mayor so we can avoid the $10 million deficit and what happened in Michigan at
4:30 a.m. [yesterday]," Mr. Ashford said, referring to Michigan's budget brinksmanship.
"Michigan and Toledo were very similar: huge increases [in taxes] in Michigan, and the city of Toledo got hit with a garbage tax," he said. "I'm going to be a strong opponent of that."
Yesterday, Mayor Finkbeiner's chief of staff, Robert Reinbolt, said the budget Mr. Finkbeiner proposes Nov. 15 likely will call for continuing the trash fee or a replacement revenue source.
