Friday Night Rumble

Has anyone else heard of the gang fight which took place Friday night at the Speedway on the corner of Arlington at South Detroit. My brother stopped in to get his evening cup of coffee and was an eye witness to the ensuing rumble.

About 35-50 youth and young adults gathered in the lot after the Bowsher-Start football game. They quickly divided into two seperate groups and started with the verbal insults. It was at this point that the white t-shirts they were wearing were removed exposing colors of red and blue underneath. The insults quickly ecalated to fist fights, metal pipes being wielded, rocks being thrown pelting the cars of patrons who were there just to fill up their tanks. They proceeded to tear things off the pumpimg station like paper towel dispensers, squeegees, and anything else that was easily accesible like over-turning trash resepticals to use as weapons as well.

The Speedway clerks attempted to break it up but were ignored. Fearing for their own safety they quickly retreated to the safety of the store and telephoned the Police. Upon realizing that the police were on their way, the rioters split the scene as quickly as they arrived. By the time the police arrived all they found was a parking lot littered with the signs that something took place but all the pepatrators were long gone.

I only ask if anyone else knows of this because I have not heard any news reports or seen anything in the paper about it. I am sure that Speedway has it on video as the clerk there this morning told me so.

Can anyone shed more light on this incident?

to keep this stuff quiet. So you won't hear it on the news or read about it in the paper. That is the beauty of the Internet. That way we can inform each other to keep those safe who know about it. I really appreciate your reporting this because i have teenagers who wanted to go to that game. Now that I know what happened, they won't be going to any games unless I am there.

And I will be informing other parents.

Thanks a lot!

I feel bad for those Speedway employees. They didnt sign on for riot control. They should never have tried to break up the fight at all.

Last night while at Westfield I saw a rowdy bunch wearing white shirts and black pants. Anyone know what gang that is? Broke my own rule about that mall and Saturday nights. I'll never go again.

I live right near there and there have been other fights there before, at times even gun fire has been reported. Normally the employees don't try to break up anything - they just call the police and the police visit there often through the course of their shifts for coffee, etc. The media hasn't reported on much of that before either but you'd think that a group that large fighting would get at least a mention.

Quite a few years back both my brother and I lived in the apartment building at 2044 Arlington - separate apartments. We'd sit out on the deck in the summer and hear gun shots from the surrounding neighborhood on a real regular basis.

Talked to one of the clerks who was there Friday night - he said it took the police twenty minutes to show up and by the time they did everyone was gone but, on Saturday someone from the police department did come take the video in which they should be able to get some of the plate numbers of the cars involved.

He said it was easily 50 people involved and confirmed what KrazyKat's brother said about things being thrown around and at cars. He was surprised none of the local media covered the story too.

...for one it reflects badly on the Old South End (especially when they are trying to get movement on Southwyck). Too bad the city doesn't go more high-tech, and start to put out security cameras to cover all vantage points (starting with areas where problems have been reported).

I disagree with the statement the media doesn't broadcast or write about anything about disturbances involving school and school related activities. Every time a disturbance occurs at a Central City school or at an activity related to a Central City School the media does a fantastic job letting evryone know about the incident. So, to say they keep things like this silent, not true.

Bowsher and Start were Central City schools. The Central City High Schools are Scott, Libbey and Woodward. I didn't take the reporting as a school issue, I took it as a social (gang related) issue because of the Blue (crip) and Red (blood) shirts that were exposed under the white tee's.

Was I wrong to assume this? The reason this type of disturbance is not reported on is to cloak that neighborhood in a cocoon of comfortability and thinking this can't happen in my neighborhood.

Also the mayor was quoted in Friday's Blade as stating that we can't have middle class people leaving the city. If this type of stuff is going on in that area of the city, it would be very disconcerting to the neighborhood, I would think.

"Also the mayor was quoted in Friday's Blade as stating that we can't have middle class people leaving the city."

Toledo is a blue collar, middle class city. Who the hell does he think has been leaving over the past 30 years???

This kind of thing goes on all the time. It's nothing to hear of 200 or more people fighting in various parts of town on my Trunk Tracker. Get yourself a Police Radio and find out what goes on out there that doesn't make the news.

I asked a guy that works for the Blade why some things don't get reported and I think he said if there was an arrest that it was then reported.

You all are crazy.

Don't you listen to Carty? There are no gangs in Toledo.

I thought I was replying to Joe Glotz and I didn't catch the sarcasm. Sorry!!!!

for it to get reported or not reported. It takes a gag order that says there are no gangs in Toledo, so don't report that there is. Mikea, I am with you on that one!!

middle class won't leave the city!!

(over a loud speaker) WOULD THE LAST PERSON IN THE CITY OF TOLEDO PLEASE TURN OUT THE LIGHTS.... THAT IS ALL

The Blade sure did get excited about EIGHT students fighting at Scott H.S. Over 400 words worth of excited the very next day. Wonder why a rumble of 45-50 doesn't qualify for a mention?

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

that it wasn't reported much. It was at a gas station right down the street from UTMCO, right accross the street from the under construction High School, and across from a senior center, hospice and so on..... We cannot shed the light that this sort of behavior is right in the middle of all the new and interconnected locations now can we?? How would that look for Toledo and the OSE?? My, my...no way could such a thing be talked about in open fourm...lol

reads the headline in the Blade article in which the word "arrested" was my point. A rumble of 45-50 in which no arrests are made may be why it didn't make the news. If the police couldn't or "wouldn't" get there in time to catch them in act to make an arrest is another story.

What I don

which actually said 35-50 :-) and from Kat who's brother was an eye witness. I'll take that over the Blade account any day of the week.

??

Wow shot over the bow. Wonder why?

Everytime I see a bunch of people who are dressed just alike I start to wonder if they are members of a gang. Just last week I saw 6 or 7 teenage boys all wearing identical red and grey jackets with shamrocks sewen or the front. I don't know who they were, but they could be part of the imfamous Shamrock Gang or maybe they might be Toledo Central Catholic Athletes.

...

...

That's my point, pumhrt, Bowser and Start aren't Central City Schools.. Wake up and smell the sarcasm. When I was a teenager in the 1960's in Toledo, incidents at Scott, Libbey, Woodward and sometimes Devilvis would get reported. But, if an incident involves the Central Catholic, St. Francis, Bowser, Whitmer or Start, you never heard anything except rumors.

Actually, that article says that 25 students were fighting - 8 was the number of students arrested.

(I could see a reasonable argument being made that 25 students fighting with 8 arrests during school hours might possibly be more newsworthy than a fight of an estimated 35+, according to what was stated above, with no arrests.)

One officer against 50 morons, while under contract with a private enterprise not directly associated with the ensuing melee, backup only 20+ minutes away, implicating the city directly in the impending lawsuits, or let someone else make the call while checking out the sale price on Tums.

I think the "officer down" issue might also have something to do with the non-involvement.

The Speedway is about half a mile north on Detroit. Doubtful he could have seen anything with a firehouse, WGTE, and a big medical complex in between Krogers and the Speedway.

Edit - forget it. I'm not going to get into a battle over someone else's reading comprehension.

Maybe I have the wrong gas station then. I was thinking of the gas station on Detroit and Glendale.
