River East's new director has organization running strong

After a rough year in which River East Economic Revitalization Corp. almost lost its management contract at The Docks, the organization is running strong again with a new executive director.

Mr. Peebles, 49, of Lyons, Ohio, filled a position that has not had a full-time occupant since early 2006, when former longtime director Donald Monroe was loaned to Toledo Mayor Carty Finkbeiner to assist on economic development projects, including the Marina District. In February, Mr. Monroe went to work full time for the city as a senior development specialist.

Recently, the organization went to court to fight the Finkbeiner administration over The Docks restaurant complex in International Park.

Saying River East was mismanaging the operation and was in default of its management agreement, the city took over The Docks in April. Richard Scheich, a lawyer and member of the River East board, said the dispute was resolved with a consent agreement that allows River East to continue as the manager. He said River East reduced its administrative fee from 15 percent to 10 percent.

Interestingly the article points out the former head of the failing Corporation was loaned and then hired by the city and lead the Corporation during its failing times and with new blood the Corporation turned around.
