Recall petitions burned

I cannot believe what I just heard on the news. Instead of turning in the recall petitions (even though they were short on the number needed) Chad Quigley and Tom Morrisey BURNED THE PETITIONS!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me? Their excuse was that some people were afraid that if the petitions were turned in with their name on it, there would be retaliation. Then why in the hell did they sign it in the first place?! When the recall effort first started, I thought it was being run poorly and in a juvenile manner. Then I changed my mind and supported it. But now, all credibility that Chad and Tom had has gone out the window. They just made a laughingstock out of the whole effort. Good job guys!!!

According to RecallCarty.com We were able to collect just over 17,000.

Guess we will never really know for sure if this count was accurate or if the RecallCarty campaign is just blowing smoke.

If man has no tea in him, he is incapable of understanding truth. ~Japanese Proverb

I was oppoosed to the recall effort. But, as time progressed I started to respect Morrisey's efforts. I think Mr. Morrisey is in a tough spot. Release the names or keep your word? Either way he will upset people, but I have more respect for him for keeping his word with the individuals who signed. That being said, if these people weren't willing to have their names released, they really shouldn't have signed the petition and expected Mr. Morrisey to make that decision. If you're going to stand up for something, then you should go all in.

I could not believe that after all the hype about the recall and how supposedly "close" they were to reaching the quota, they nullified all of it by burning the petitions. If they were close to the total they needed, why burn the petitions? If you were close, even if you were short, having the petitions counted might make an impression. Now the whole thing might as well have never happened. The excuse of fearing retaliation from Carty is BS. This was a load of crap from the get-go. They end up looking as ridiculous as Carty himself. Essentially they end up appearing to be...

Attention Whores

Oh, but they MADE A DIFFERENCE, right? What a joke.

I too am frustrated. But not over the burning of the names. Nope, I'm frustrated that even with all that we all know, ample numbers of citizens could have made their complaint known by signing the recall. More people than sign, complain every day. We hit an impass with time and there's nothing we can do about that. Being short 2000 signatures from the minimum ment we were really short over 5000. You have to have enough for the BOE to even look at them. Being short the minimum combined with being short the overage needed to cover any fall offs, would mean jepordizing everyone that did sign for no positive outcome. Ask the folks over on Beachway about their mayoral nightmare.
And that was over a stinking bike path. Imagine how much more enraged the Mayor is with the citizens that feel he is not worthy of being Mayor.

Think what you want as to our motives and our mission and our decision to burn the signatures to protect the people brave enough to stand up. There are pictures a plenty in the Toledo Free Press this weekend. You can get a preview over on GCJ as TFP provided a couple of shots to Lisa.

Tom is to be commended and respected as are all the many people that helped in this endevor. Those of you that have not experienced this activity cannot understand the sheer amount of effort and sacrifice it takes to come as far as the Recall did.

We kept our word, and I will never be sorry about that.

Where people fear their name being read by elected officials?

http://toledoohioneighborhoodconcerns.com/blog

Bullies and tyrants instill fear and intimidate people. There should be no question in anyone's mind that the mayor is a bully -- it's on record and in print and strong evidence exists to support that. So, yes, the fear is justified. That's how Carty gets away with irrational policies, statements and actions in addition to, for a lack of a better term, shady back room deals.

First off I did not sign the petition, but I want to commend Tom and all the others involved in their dedication and efforts toward something they really believed in over the last few months.

Second, I am as staunch a conservative as they come and could be a poster child for AM 1370's broader conservative message, but Brian Wilson's tone in his latest post and the one he uses in his show in general are just sickening. I'm not sure if I have ever heard a more bitter man on the radio. With three hours of non-stop negativity everyday I hope that he and the other folks over at Clear Channel aren't wondering why many other conservatives have turned the station off since Denny Schaeffer left. He may in fact be a very educated man, but his condescening, arrogant attitude towards everything is not and certainly won't help Toledo get out of the dowldrums that it is currently in.

I am not turning in the petitions... We have around 17,000 and the phone calls, email, and visits keep coming from volunteers.

Reasons:
#1. Madigan is right in that petitions that are ballot issues have to be filed 75 days before the election. When I talked to the BOE they even told me that they weren't sure about my deadline, but I would not get many if any extra days because of that 75 day deadline... also, my "free" time has been cut out with the start of the semester at UT--I don't have any time to feed the cats let alone time to lead anything.

#2. One of the big things we ran on was the fiscal irresponsibility of the mayor.. spending tax dollars like nothing. It would be hypocritical of me when I know I don't have near the required number to waste tax dollars by wasting County employees time.

#3 Most importantly:

MANY PEOPLE WERE SCARED TO SIGN THIS PETITION. WHEN THEY SAW THEY WOULD HAVE TO PUT THEIR ADDRESS DOWN, THEY ASKED "WILL CARTY SEE THIS CAUSE I DON'T WANT ANY TROUBLE." i AND MANY OF MY VOLUNTEERS PROMISED THAT WE WOULDN'T TURN THEM IN UNLESS WE HAVE THE REQUIRED AMOUNT - 20,000. I PERSONALLY TOLD THIS TO AT LEAST OVER 100 PEOPLE. I GAVE MY WORD TO THESE PEOPLE BECAUSE THEY WERE SCARED OF WHAT might HAPPEN. I AM NOT BEING A BRAVE AND VALIANT SOUL AND "PROTECTING" THESE PEOPLE AND I AM NOT WASTING OUR EFFORT. THE FACT IS I GAVE MY WORD, I PROMISED THESE PEOPLE, AND EVEN THOUGH I'M NOT TOO THRILLED WITH IT LIKE SOME OTHERS ARE NOT THRILLED, IF I DON'T KEEP MY WORD, I HAVE NOTHING. IF I DONT KEEP MY WORD, I AM A LIAR, AND I'D RATHER KEEP MY WORD THAN PLEASE OTHERS. THIS ISN'T ABOUT ME PROTECTING ANYTHING - I'M NOT BEING ANYONES' HERO.

The one thing I have learned from my Dad is to keep your word. that's all I'm doing

I just got off work, it's almost 3 am, and I am not making any promises, but I will try to set my alarm for around 7:30 to explain this to Fred, then I will fall back asleep... but no promises.

Tom Morrissey

I've been called negative so many times I have lost count. Most of these people feed from the TPS trough and have not brought too much in the way of positive results to TPS. When I criticize, I offer constructive suggestions. However, to hear my critics you would never know. The press has generally concentrated on the criticism because that is what sells. Frankly many in this community need to pull their collective heads from the sand, get off their couches and do something to create positive change. And I've been right so many times about what is happening at TPS and within our city it isn't even funny!

Tom - I don't know many 22 year olds that would have done what you did. Whether I agree with the recall Carty effort or not, you are to be commended for getting off your couch and showing you care about where you live.

As to burning the petitions. what the hell does it really matter!!! There were not enough signatures to get it on the ballot. Perhaps Carty will spin it his way, but that just fails to recognize the reality that a whole lot of people are fed up with his leadership. Turn in the petitions, it would not have mattered! Tom did what his conscience told him was right and now takes heat for it.

To all of you who are now taking shots at his open back I say, most of you don't even post under your own name - now that is courage - NOT.

Keep it up Tom. I appreciate what it took to do what you did - the work, the threats, all it took. Retaliation from local politicos has been standard operating procedure for a long time in Toledo. Some of us just refuse to accept this as a way of life.

Toledo has positives and negatives - we should build on the successes, but we are lost if we don't look at the failures, ask why and work to correct the failures and to create a better future. Recognition is the first step and those at WSPD are simply part of that first step. We need people to wake us from our lives too often consumed with just trying to survive and make us look at how we live, work and how the future could be a little brighter.

Don't like their style? Don't listen. If those at WSPD are leading us to a false conclusion about their ratings, we will know soon enough because the station is about profit and they will be looking for new jobs.

Hey Tom, now you can get on with your life. Don't let any of this get under your skin! I'll bet we hear more from you in the future.

There are many people in Toledo that do recognize the state of the city is not what it is painted to be.

There are many that recognize that the current administrations efforts at development is not working and is actually helping to drive business away. One only needs to read the papers and news sites and blogs and discussion forums as these to see the opinions of some of the populace and the actions of this administration.

"What have you done to improve Toledo?"

The Mayor asked me this when his dander was raised when he asked him in an e-mail that I sent to him; questioning him when he wrote a letter to the editor about people complaining too much, what I have done to improve Toledo. And when I told him in an e-mail he told me to keep it and I do to this day, despite the efforts of those around him who are like road blocks to change.

"Fred, Kevin and I are on the air every day sounding the alarm that Toledo is in deep fertilizer, thanks to the Unions, the Blade, apathetic whiners like you and a hostile business environment that chases away the businesses that could save it."

This is helping the city?

How does one newspaper have so much control, whether real or imagined over a city.

http://toledoohioneighborhoodconcerns.com/blog

I heard that Carty and Jack Ford got together and drafted some policy that raised the number of signatures necessary to get a recall on the ballot.

Is this True?
What was the old number required?
What was their justification, seeing that if the number needed just remained the same, in an dwindling population, that in and of itself would make it harder to pull off...

Brian Wilson's last post makes my point again. I would hate to go through life sounding as angry and bitter as he. A what? 50 year old man? Still name calling? sad.
I, in fact am taking steps to improve Toledo, and am probably doing a better job by encouraging people to improve their community, and not sounding the trumpet from the top, constantly beating down on others. Since you have been in Lucas County, the city of Toledo and the rest of the county have only responded the last two elections by turning it into an even more "blue" region. Looks like you're condescending style is working.
Fortunately, I have changed the station, and usually listen to a more enlightening three hours on Cleveland's AM 1100. Maybe after you get canned you can apply for the 1-3 a.m. shift there?

Is an old Toledo Talk thread dealing with Brian Wilson and WSPD. It's now worth revisiting:

http://www.toledotalk.com/cgi-bin/comments.pl/7/2298

Is this the real Brian Wilson? Aren't you on vacation? Why have you come down from Olympus to mingle with us common folk? Go back to your beloved Moss Creek and take some speech lessons to fix that annoying stuttering problem you have. On second thought, why not go all the way back to the "logic-free zone", and please take Fred with you. Carty sucks and so does WSPD, now.

All you Brian Wilson basher's are so funny....

The first intelligent radio voice this area has had in a very long time. Switch to 1100 in Cleveland and listen to that windbag Trivisonno, he hates Toledo and is proud to say that.

All Brian's point's are so valid, this city and county is a joke politically, they should pump circus music into the government center.

The problem is know one wants to face the reality of what he is saying, Toledo is a laughing stock.

I listen everyday and I will support him and his station with advertising dollars, because quite frankly, every time I advertise on his show my business increases.

I know...lets bring Denny Shaffer back (again) he will save us!!!

Triv.... a regular guy....I am now convinced that everyone in this town has lost it....

ummmmm.... Cleveland compared to Toledo...

A lot of questions are being asked but the answers are just flames. How bout some answers to these questions:

Is it "negative" to say Toledo is a sinking into economic oblivion?
Is it "negative" to say Toledo Public Schools are an embarrassment"?
Is it "negative" to say the mayor and his little gang of illiterates are a local, regional and national disgrace?
Is it "negative" to ackknowledge that Toledo is a national punch line?
is it a recognition of the reality that you and your fellow citizens have alllowed to come into existance because of your contageous apathy and aggressive ignorance?

Brian's saying the same thing that 99% of us out here are saying, INCLUDING the ones slamming him, but still the flaming!

Whats up with that?

Well, okay on the validity part.

What are the answers and solutions that Wilson puts forth?

What are the answers and solutions that Neighborhood puts forth?

Nice Job Tom and Chad. Fine Effort, Great Morals, way to show some Heart and Passion!

17,000 grass roots signatures is not a ringing endorsement that people are really excited about the current Toledo environment.

My take on this whole recall has also evolved as well. I believe, Tom and Chad gave voice that there is growing back pressure on the status quo, probably more so than previously thought.

Imagine if natioanl media / campaign professionals / major donors got involved in shaping this recall?

Again if a 22 year old student who enjoys his family and cats can get 17,000 signatures, I'm sure the professionals on both sides see the cracks forming and are starting to run some SWOT analysis.

Perhaps this should be a national news item, "22 year old student with no experience was able to collect 17,000 recall signatures". That's some political lemonade stand!!!

Another way to look at the hard work. They collected enough signatures to equal the entire Census population number for the City of Perrysburg, that's every man, woman and child. Remarkable!!!

I did not do the work trying to get people to sign the petition, although I did sign the petition. If I recall when this young man put forth the message that he was going to start a recall of the mayor, most bloggers here were very discouraging to him.

But he went out and did the work. Good job Tom.

I also say to you, Tom, Good job!!! Toledo people in my opinion can be very discouraging, but you didn't get discouraged. More criticism of you will come, but there are more of us out here who applaud you.

They collected enough signatures to equal the entire Census population number for the City of Perrysburg, that's every man, woman and child. Remarkable!!!

Prove it. Oops, you can't prove it because the imbeciles burned what they had. Now no one knows what they collected. Any numbers stated are just wild guesses.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they were sincere but incompetent.

So thank them for their hard work. Too bad they wasted all of it as it literally went up in smoke. It may as well have never happened.

As you can tell, I

All they would accomplish by turning in the petitions would have been to create extra work for BOE employees at taxpayer expense when they knew they had no chance to succeed.

The petitioner showed more integrity by keeping his promise to destroy them than the petitionee showed when he promised to start new police classes.

...their fear is justified, it does exist.

Bottom line: You blew it.
Not the effort. Tom, you and all the others made a Herculean effort against all odds to stand for the principle of good governance in the face of adolescent tyranny and should be commended big time for your collective and personal sacrifices.
That being said, the rationalization of "protecting" those who signed is just that: a rationalization. At no time was there any obligation on anyone's part to "protect" the identity of those who signed. That was their individual responsibility - which one has to assume was taken into consideration before they committed to sign. If you and Tom were cutting deals with some "in case the number wasn't reached", you had an obligation to make that known to everyone. The petitions were not on a Magic Slate. Anyone in fear of Fonkboner's "retaliation" had an individual reponsibility to count that cost before grabbing the pen.
By not submitting the petitions, you made a mockery of the effort - as well as any "risk" - assumed by those who had the stones to sign regardless of any perceived
"retaliation". Their "guts" were tossed aside for no reason. Trying to sell the "integrity" of Keeping Your Word to not submit if the number wasn't reached is bogus.
The Rules indicate that, if indeed you had 15,000, submitting those would have bought you additionanal time (and strategic momentum) to go out and say, "HEY! We're THIS close! Would you like to sign on??".
That opportunity - and the principle that motivated others to sign - has been squandered for a grandstanding bonfire that only benefits Fonkboner.
You have handed him the license to point and laugh - and even make up his own numbers - to disparage not only the work you and the many volunteers did, but the principled stand others took signing their names.
All this time and effort lost for what? Had you gotten one more signature than needed, all those you are supposedly "protecting" would have been "exposed" anyway. Do you really think that the required number of signatures would have "protected" anyone from anything? Where would that "protection" have come from? Were all the signees going to huddle in a basement somewhere until the election was over?

When you take on the Machine - in any size market - it is a Major League hardball game. Your admirable efforts notwithstanding, at the end you wimped out. The suggestion that "it's not over" is laughable. You have marginalized yourself and everyone who was willing to take a stand against The Machine.

How sad.

your sappy opinions.
Your use of the worn-out charge of "negativity" is revealing: you don't have the guts or brains to recognize the deterioration of the world around you.
Is a doctor being "negative" when he says you have cancer and if you don't take the necessary steps, you'll die?
Or is it a recognition of the reality that you and your fellow citizens have alllowed to come into existance because of your contageous apathy and aggressive ignorance? You're the type who would have told Paul Revere to shut up.

Don't blame your inability to face reality on me or my station. If it makes you sick, you can work to save Toledo or change the station and enjoy your anal-cranial inversion.

By the way: WSPD's ratings are better than they've ever been.

Please don't compare Brian Wilson to Mike Trivisonno. Wilson is an elitist, know-it-all pseudo-intellectual snob, preaching his "enlightened" thoughts to the unwashed masses who so desperately need his guidance. Trivisonno is just a regular guy giving his opinion. In any event WTAM's ratings dwarf WSPD's easily.

Yes, the city and county are a joke. It doesn't take a genius to see that. Stating the obvious does not denote intelligence. I give Brian credit for being a smooth manipulator though. He conned WSPD into putting him in charge and giving his wife the news division to boot. He's the Carty of the Toledo radio world.

Well, I do not understand the question.

I commented that Mr. Wilson listed a lot of things that some of us agree on.

And through natural discourse comes resolutions but we keep hearing the same thing about the city and like we said some of us agree.

And as Mr. Wilson has some command over the airwaves he could choose to share with us, here, solutions to the problems instead of repeating the same things over and over.

We get it.

Now what can we do.

The Recall effort has ended so what is next for us to try. Complaining amongst ourselves does get us further down the road but merely keeps us walking in circles.

Is it "negative" to say Toledo is a sinking into economic oblivion?

Solution: Create an tax-free zone. Setup a 10 mile zone that for 5 years no sales tax can be collected.
Solution: Let the city stop trying to get involved in economic development by annexing land like Ghettowycke. Let the market take care of itself.
Solution: Sell of some pet projects like Portside/COSI and the Erie Street Market.

Is it "negative" to say Toledo Public Schools are an embarrassment"?

Solution: Elect people who have different last name then the status quo.
Solution: Attend school board meetings and comment.

Is it "negative" to say the mayor and his little gang of illiterates are a local, regional and national disgrace?

Solution: Elect people who have different last name then the status quo.
Solution: Attend city council meetings and comment.

Is it "negative" to acknowledge that Toledo is a national punch line?

Solution: Petition Trivia Pursuit to get rid of the airport card.

"By the way: WSPD's ratings are better than they've ever been."

Not from what I've read. But what's new? You like to make up facts. I suppose it's a Blade conspiracy against you.

Coulda sworn I've heard on your show several times how much you distain blogs and the people who post on them...and, here you are!

To all that you said.

If he can't understand how Morrissey and Quigley could keep their word, how can you expect him to abide by anything he says? To compare his ego to his actual influence would be like comparing the Grand Canyon to a front yard ditch. The man has no influence, ratings are going down, and because of his ego, he has to come somewhere where his opinion will be heard. Only this move was rather dangerous because he can't hide behind a phone screener. Wilson doesn't even live in Toledo and has no compelling interest to be here except for ratings and cash. Toledo is just the next stop for him in his burning out career - I think Evansville, IN might be next.

Wilson's abnormal obsession for Carty is comparable to Gollum in Lord of the Rings and Wilson's latest actions can be compared to Jack Nicholson in The Shining... I see the gray-haired Wilson bent over like Gollum with Gollum's raspy demonic voice chasing Quigley and Morrissey (and anyone else who fails at getting Carty)with an ax saying, "Darling. Light, of my life. I'm not gonna hurt ya. You didn't let me finish my sentence. I said, I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. I'm gonna bash 'em right the f@#$ in. Ha, ha."
