Toledo will receive a $3 million grant to help clean up the former Acme Power Plant in the Marina District, the city learned yesterday.

A spokesman for Mayor Carty Finkbeiner said that the Ohio Department of Development had awarded the grant to the city from the Clean Ohio Revitalization Fund.

The money will be used to eliminate asbestos and soil contamination in the west side of the plant, which then would be used for residential and retail development.
Toledo Edison operated the power plant for nearly 80 years until 1994.

The cleanup project would affect about 50,000 square feet of the 167,000-square-foot building. The remainder of the old power plant would be sealed.

In addition to the state grant, the city would spend about $1.1 million out of its capital improvements budget.
