Ohio wants special car plates for sex offenders

Tagged:

CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Lawmakers in Ohio said on Wednesday they want to force convicted sex offenders to use a fluorescent-green license plate on their cars so they can be easily identified.

A Republican and a Democrat in the state legislature in Columbus have joined forces to propose the law, which echoes measures in several U.S. states that require convicted drunken drivers to use a yellow, pink or red plate on their cars.

"The fluorescent-green license plate will make the most egregious sex offenders easily identifiable," state Democratic Rep. Michael DeBose said in a statement.

I wonder what is meant by this: ""The fluorescent-green license plate will make the most egregious sex offenders easily identifiable," state Democratic Rep. Michael DeBose said in a statement."

Obviously I see the benefit in the idea - say someone with a history of pedophilia, I'm sure the thought is to aid the police if a child goes missing.

I also know that many times false charges are brought against people for a variety of malicious reasons and sometimes they are successful. And one very powerful way to really ruin somebody's life is to accuse them of this. Nothing is ever simple anymore....

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

Why not make them all wear fluorescent-green clothing? The license proposal is a dumb idea and won't work. No half-smart pedophile would own or drive such a vehicle. If we are going to these extremes, just lock them up forever and be done with it.

I commend those who proposed this for trying to think up new ideas. This was a good one for DUI convictions but I don't know if it would work as well with sex offenders.

Also if we do decide to get license plate happy with all these colors and different offenses then we risk of diminishing their effectiveness.

It's easy to spot the DUI ones but if we overdo it then people would have a hard time remember what is what plus their interest in them wouldn't be as good.

Overall I'd say good initiative/bad judgement. But keep the idea's flowing because that's what'll stop this crisis.

as I am confused by what standard the politicians are going to define "the most egregious sex offenders." In my estimation anyone that is a sex offender has already committed an egregious act. What are going to be the parameters for determining who is MOST egregious? Perhaps I will get to ask this question while I'm meeting with our state legislators next week.

And another consideration....the effort to reintroduce these offenders back into a productive society with enough support services/agencies to keep track of them will become almost non-existent. The 'branding' done by those lime green plates would further ostricize these people and quite possibly cause a very, very negative outcome. Not to mention those that would use those lime green plates as identifiers so that they could exact vigilante justice.

There are a lot of considerations here. This should not be one of those 'sign on the dotted line' pieces of legislation.

(Hits herself in the forehead), if someone was going to go out and do something - they'd probably NOT use the car with the sex offender plate.

And so this is adiaphora.

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

...with the flashing yellow light on top?

Am I the only person that understands this affliction pedophiles endure is genetic?

What makes it worse is it's the same gene that determines homosexuality and determines heterosexuality.

The "desire" gene.

In other words, unless you can find a "cure" for hetero/homo sexuality, there's not much that can be done to "re-educate" a pedophile.

Bottom line is this affliction affects a segment of society that's treasured and protected, not consenting adults.

Rapists, on the other hand, have control issues. These people deserve the heinous disposition of being put to the most painful public death in the longest time possible.

License plates aren't going to provide the same service to the community as the DUI plates do, which would be the goal.

Unless you lobotomize "these people", locking them away from society for their natural lives is the safest (and only) assurance that "these people" will never take a childhood or a woman's innocence again.

Driving around in a buddy's/borrowed car will not afford that assurance.

Well! We're just not going far enough, now, are we? Sex offenders should be made to wear ID badges in bright colors so we the public can exercise our natural right to know them wherever they are -- on the street, in the office, in stores, etc.

You can see a proposed sample of such a badge, and it is a stylish example of what can be achieved in personal and statutory labelling.

The badge has a brightly colored yellow background which catches the eye of the public. This is moderated with friendly colors like blue and green forming a modern and angular font for the "S" and "O" (meaning "sex offender"). The offender's registration number is also printed on the badge for easy reporting. Finally, the badge has four black grommets for various attachment options to clothing, hats, and so on. These grommets are large for easy attachment with anything from thread, string, even rope, to staples, clips and the like; and, they are black since that makes them subdued from the main colors of the badge.

after all, it has nearly put an end to drunk driving. right?

Personally I don't have a problem with a good old fashioned court house hanging for someone convicted of raping a child.

Might as well include smokers in there somewhere, they're considered worse than child molesters or drunk drivers now....

In World War 2 we fought (and defeated) the Axis. Today we're afraid of cellphones, smokers, and cheeseburgers. It's about at the end, people.

'I used to have compassion, but they taxed it and legislated it out of existence.'

Would be kind of a guarantee for car vandalism tho. Probably have a lot of vigilantism in parking lots too.

Would be kinda fun tho to steal a molester plate and put it on the car of somebody you cant stand and let people kick his doors in...

What is this, "The Scarlet Letter" re-written? While the intent may be good, this will open the floodgates for vigilantes to take the law into their own hands - beatings, shootings, lynchings, etc. Everybody hates what sex offenders do or have done - especially when they are crimes against children. I'm sure we'd all like to see child molesters hung in the courthouse (or worse). But this is not the answer. Will spectators know what the sex crime was (child molesting, rape, or simply a case of an 18 yr old boy who had sex with his 17 yr old girlfriend - and some have been marked sexual offenders over it)? How many times will somebody with a few drinks in them make a snap judgement & assume the guy they are about to beat to a bloody pulp is a child molester? And I imagine lawsuits would be rampant. Even the license plates for DUI's I think are silly - while I'm sure some people with them do still drink & drive, they'd have to be stupid to drive drunk with DUI plates (yes, I know).

slides GZ's coffee cup away......

Question. For the purposes of MY question, let's discuss true sexual deviants - and let's go ahead and identify MY idea of deviants, shall we?

I say we include people that want to abduct, have sex with, dismember and/or murder children.

I say don't include, and have another discussion on another day, about a 16 year old girl and a 17 year old boy, (or vice versa) exploring sex without Mom and Dad's okey dokie.

For those that we identify as habitual predators of infants (oh yes - they go there) and young children - let's discuss these. Because to my mind, this is the major issue.

Now - we have, or damn sure should have learned that these people never, ever stop.

Since we have information about their inability to stop preying on our children - does anybody have a suggestion about these predators?

I think that a family with small children has a right to know if a neighbor of theirs has an appetite for small children.

No - yes? And if you say yes - the current system is garbage. The tags obviously are a dumbass idea - ideas?

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

I don't think the sexual predator label (or license plates) distinguishes between child molesters & the 18 yr old boy who had sex with his 17 yr old girlfriend (and there are guys who've done jail time because of that, and ARE labeled as sexual predators). Perhaps that's part of the problem. I still don't think labeling them is the answer - unless you're ok with them becoming easy targets for lynchings, beatings, murdering. (Yes, they may well deserve it, but we're not supposed to take the law in our own hands). I think the simple solution would be to require castration of all sexual predators - fix it surgically so they cannot have sex ever. (cut it off if need be). Would solve the bulk of the problem.

Even better then the license plates is something you can already do go to http://ohio.esorn.net/index.php?AgencyID=53960 and you can check for sexual offenders living near you and you can sign up for email alerts so you don't have to keep going back to check for new ones.
You'll get enough information to know if the person is a child predator or if he (I say He only because so far for my area at least I've never gotten a female listed) prefers them as adults.

Of course that list won't tell you that the car parked at the mall belongs to one of these deviants. Then again those plates won't tell you if the person driving the car is the actual criminal either, which I guess is my problem with it.
Maybe slapping a scarlet letter on the offender wouldn't be a good idea but slapping a scarlet license plate on the family car only punishes people who have the bad luck of being related to him.

Wow

Nice image, GZ. Reminds me of...

You're on to something, GZ...

Try to stay with me here....

What if.... What if we decided that we should "mark" sex offenders some how? Maybe... uhh... with a letter, like "X" or something that we could paint on them. It would have to stand out... maybe yellow? .... or red?

This is a new enough idea that it just MIGHT work.........

All the deviants have to be labelled. Let's go after the fags and dykes, too; they're just a filthly little minority, right? We already have a law set firmly in place to stop such deviants from "devaluing marriage". In faaaact, Ohio's anti-gay-marriage law was one of the most broadly-worded, so it's incumbent upon the Rest Of Us to keep a keen eye on the sexual freaks just in case they try ANYTHING that resembles a relationship between a man and a woman. It's "eternal vigilance", folks! Er ... isn't it?

Anyway ... this rabid rightwingnut thinking is just great! The world gets soooo much simpler! Labelling, tracking, arresting, jailing ... now I understand how good society can become by indulging in such behavior. I think I'll go and sign up for McCain's campaign now. Heck, I wish I had a son like ToledoTalk's Paulhem does, so I could send him overseas to murder people. {claps hands with joy}

We can tattoo sex offenders with their registration numbers on their forearms! I can't believe that nobody's thought of doing that before.

Why don't we just give in to everyones worst fears and make it a capital crime?

Then all we have to worry about is fluorescent caskets.
