Nashville mayor vetoes English-only bill

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - "Mayor Bill Purcell vetoed a measure Monday that would have made English the official language of Nashville, saying it was unconstitutional, unnecessary and mean-spirited."

How so?? The article goes on to say that:

"Nashville, a city of more than 600,000, is home to the nation's largest Kurdish community and has been a resettlement site for refugees from Africa and Southeast Asia. The Hispanic immigrant population also has boomed."

That being the case, as all these people begin to interact and have business dealings with one another, wouldnt it only make sense to have one language as the official one?

Good for him. What a waste of time.

Makes sense to me. I've always been a supporter of making english the offical language.

Good for the mayor. It's about time somebody stood up to these right wing nutjobs. The United States, nor any state thereof, has an official language. While it might be convenient for everyone to learn English, we shouldn't enforce it upon them.

this would fall into my "don't you have better things to do?" category. even the proponents recognize this had little to no practical impact.

additionally, nashville has a growing international corporate community. there's no sense in possibly jeopardizing that.

wouldnt it only make sense to have one language as the official one?

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But no. You might offend the sensitive Kurds, Sunnis or Shiites who have decided to bring their holy war to bubba country. Then there are the illegal aliens, AKA the 'undocumented workers' from Mexico. We certainly don't want to offend any of them, either. How long do you think it will be before we stop displaying the American flag because it makes our foreign visitors uncomfortable?

Of course, since there is no official language, the government will be faced with the same problems that Los Angeles, CA has been experiencing for the last fifteen years: special bi-lingual school teachers, social workers and government officials of all kinds are needed so as not to discriminate against Manuel or Mohammed when their kids go to public school or when they decided to file for welfare. Go and add that little gem to your budget and see how the voters react.

The last time I checked most of the world uses English as its business language. You cannot, according to the law of the land, become a citizen of our country until you can read and speak fluently in English. So my advice is all governmental agencies should stop being enablers and publish all documents in English.

If someone cannot understand our language they either are not citizens or they have chosen to be a part from our country not a part of it.

There is nothing that gets me more upset than calling a governmental office and the first thing I am asked is if I want to speak in English or Spanish.

You know, the great melting pot thing? If people want to go into business in corporate America - they need english. Other than that - isn't the language you speak a cultural choice?

The government can make laws about what language you speak? I must be missing something.....I don't want government regulating any speech - it'll surely get around to me eventually.

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

Great idea! We'll designate English as the offical language, set up a National Institute of the English Language, whose staff will consist of grammarians and lexicographers. Their tasks will include fining anybody who violates the rules of grammar and uses words of foreign origin. In no time at all they'll have us all speaking Old English. Communicating will be hard at first, but we'll eventually get the hang of it.

Another government body will look for signage (as they do in Quebec) containing any foreign words. Since "restaurant" is of foreign origin, we must by law refer to eating establishments as Eateries or PigOuts. The entire vocabulary of the language will be reduced to about 1,000 words after all foreignisms have been stripped away. Nobody will have to worry about learning new words since there won't be any. New words will be created by compounding, e.g., a submarine will be called an UnderWaterBoat, just like German. Great idea!

Hey, I'm serious! I think we should designate English as the only permitted language in the U.S. Anything else will be severely prosecuted to the Nth degree. Zero tolerance! AND we need to clean up OUR act. No more double negatives and watch those nasty contrary-to-fact conditional sentences! Bugs me when I hear people misusing those.

As a matter of fact, we need to summarily lynch anybody who doesn't speak the language correctly. Hope it isn't me...Ooops! I mean I.

No I wasn't intending to say I thought anyone should be required to adopt a second language in documentation or education - that sort of thing. We aren't required to now, are we? I am not sure...

Pete, if they extend that thought lynching thought to spelling, I'm a goner.

If you're here to tell me it's my fault - you're right. I meant to do it. It was alot of fun. That's why I have this happy smile on my face.

They can speak what ever language they want for personal use but the government shouldn't have to print every document in a dozen different languages because they want to live here but not speak the language.

Seriously, do you think you could live full time in a different country (not including military bases) without learning the language?

don't be an ass.
