Is he really required to put his hand on the Bible to be sworn in? The reason I ask has to do with the Keith Ellison controversy, in which it was discovered that a religious book was not required during the swearing-in process, but was instead used (sometimes) during the photo-op that followed. Just wondered...

Why is the swearing in done in the middle of the night?

The swearing in can be done any time following the certification of the votes. The term of office begins at midnight on the designated day. Some choose to be sworn in right at the start of the term, hence the swearing in in the middle of the night....
